damian, why do you think we need that at san jose state? ell, to kind of backtrack a little bit, when i first started there at san jose state as a grad student there really wasn't anything. other than the g.i. bill certifying official. and then we kind of started -- i felt lost there. and then we kind of started putting together different resources. there was a veteran student organization that was started in 2009. more recently i transitioned out of school and i worked a job with the v.a. on campus where i provided services to vets on campus. part of my job is to pull in more resources for vets. but i think it's key for veterans to be successful as students, and to make that transition from the military world back into the civilian world as positive as possible and as fluidly as possible. and it's a long process. so i think having those tools in place really helped to kind of expedite that and to make it a much better transition than if they just showed up back in the civilian world and no real direction on where to go. so these folks have

it happened just a block from san jose state university. she was a college student and not the intended target. police say there are no suspects or motive. they may pass the highest homicide record of 53 set in 1991. in the gang suppression task force is back on the street. it's the third phase of the chief's plan to reduce violence. the unit is made up of 14 officers. all four are metro unit officers familiar with two major gang causing the most problems in san jose. now this gang suppression unit had been sidelined by budget cuts this years past. >>> the santa clara county is bankrupt. they assure the community that service will not be impacted. the ambulance service is in year three of a five-year contract. it's not been smooth sailing. in april world record paid thousands for failing to meet response time expectations. in july it failed to make a bopd payment on time. plus as paramedics and emts are working without a m%pjp(u they will bring $135 million in funds for improved operations. >> it means we can continue and maintain the servi

in san jose, an arrest has been made in the killing of 19- year-old san jose state student. kimberly chico. she was shot and killed last saturday morning, near the intersection of south second and east san salvador streets. the suspect, identified as 23-year- old johnny lozano, was booked on homicide charges. and being a felon in possession of a gun. police say chico was an innocent victim, in the wrong place at the wrong time. the shooting happened as bars were closing in downtown san jose. south of first street. more arrests could still a multi-state manhunt is on for kidnapping and murder suspect james dimaggio. dimaggio is suspected of abducting two children in california. after killing their mother. a police spokeswoman says investigators have uncovered new information that the dimaggio may be more dangerous than they first thought. investigators also say that if you spot dimaggio's car. *do not approach it. they're worried it might be rigged with explosives. authorities have also including parts of canada and mexico in the hunt for dimaggio.jan caldwell san diego co. sh

at san jose state student orientation starts with a speech from the university's president.classes also resume at a college of san mateo this morning. other schools in san francisco, we already talked about that. other schools resuming class today, santa clara unified where workers spent last week putting finishing touches on classroom repairs. milpitas unified, oak grove also going back to school. those are districts in the south bay which fall under the purview of the santa clara county education. its superintendent says one of the big challenges, implementing the common core standards, designed to provide students with a 21st century skill set to make them better problem solvers and critical thinkers. >> is it hard to implement a monument change like that? >> it is. i creates anxiety, uncertainty with teachers. it's hard to define t. standards have to be introduced and you have to continue to provide professional development. it's not an inoculation, it's something instructional leaders at school will have to continue to enforce, observe classroom at school will have to c
