[intro music] welcome to the campus of san jose state university in this edition of equal time. i'm your host, journalism school director bob rucker. more than half of the faculty in the california state university system are lecturers - faculty with full or part-time temporary positions. on this edition of equal time, correspondent jennifer gonzalez discusses the challenges that adjunct professors face. year after year, cal state institutions undergo drastic budget cuts and are expected to meet the needs of students, faculty, and administration. in a search to cut costs, institutions like san jose state hire a greater amount of adjunct professors. despite the advantages of part-time lecturers, adjuncts across campuses say they are faced with discrimination and exploitation. they are given low wages, little to no benefits, and a lack of job security. associate english professor andrew fleck says adjunct situations affect not only the individual, but they place a strain on a students' education. many students may not realize that the professor that they have is, you know, teaching

san jose earlier this morning. this is what's left behind this afternoon. heavy flames turned through the vacant two-story house just after 3:00 this morning. it happened on north 9th street near san jose state university. a firefighter had to be taken to the hospital for minor injuries. >>> now to new details from whole foods after a security guard allegedly beat a shopper unconscious in oakland on thursday. the security guard is now permanently off the job. an eyewitness posted these pictures on facebook after the incident. a spokeswoman for the grocery chain says the customer made physical contact with an employee before the guard intervened. the customer is hospitalized in stable condition. oakland police and whole foods are investigating. a company representative issued a new statement today saying, quote, we do have a zero tolerance policy for violence. as a result of the violent behavior of the security guard at whole foods market oakland we are replacing this security firm in the store. >>> a disturbing child important bust in san francisco this week. it involves young victims from several states and overseas, some as young as a year old. yesterday the san francisco pd and the fbi announced the

university. why not? if i was in their case, why wouldn't i come here to san jose state and be out here trying to mingle with the people, as you say. bob: you're youth- montez: you're youth! bob: so you are young people, very intelligent young people, you want to connect wit them. but the other side of the coin, i'm sure the administration would want me to say, "yes, but how do we control that or at least maintain safety?" because, again, we have a responsibility as administrators to make sure that the students are safe, as well as any visitor. so how do we do that and not cross a line of making it, "get out." dwayne: i think the university is doing a fantastic job, you know, because i know personally a lot of homeless individuals that do, you know, go in this campus and they've never had any negative interaction with the students or the campus police. the campus police they're very-you know, i remember when i was being homeless, walking on the campus and, you know, had to sleep on the campus because i didn't' have no place to sleep bob: i encourage you all to keep what you're doing up and helping the youth
