"today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live from san jose. we know san jose's largest school district is keeping students home. they just made this big announcement. >> yeah, they just made this announcement last night and sent out a note to parents and made that phone call. but a lot of parents say that with the county potentially getting the green light to move to more in-person instruction within the week's time by the state's criteria that this is a decision that is premature. now, in a letter the superintendent pointed to higher case counts than they were in march when schools closed. more community spread and need for more testing and contact tracing. the district of about 30,000 students also surveyed parents, teachers and staff and found that 60% expressed a desire for more consistency for the semester. so, instead of returning to campus after the fall break in october, students will remain at home through december. now in a statement, superintendent nancy albaban said while we believe in-person in-personstruction is the best option f

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is outside in san jose. but first we want to start with meteorologist kari hall. kari, just how bad is it out there? >> it doesn't matter which one of these cameras we look at. it just looks so smokey right now. you can barely see anything. this is looking over the santa cruz mountains. you don't have very far visibility. as we look at these numbers, from the past few days the smoke has been a little bit higher in the atmosphere. but now it's being pushed down and it's not moving. we've had such unhealthy air quality that even healthy people may start to experience some symptoms from this feeling nauseous or having a headache or even some breathing problems. look at these very unhealthy numbers spreading across the bay area as we see a lot more of the fog moving in as well and not much of a wind. so this is not mixing out. and as we go into today, we do expect more of this unhealthy air quality even as our winds shift from the south we do have fires to the south. so we could just bring in another round of so

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is cracking this for us. kris. >> hi, marcus. one of those three people found dead in their car clearly trying to escape those flames but the fire just moved way too fast once those winds started kicking up. the bear fire is part of the greater north complex, a quarter million acres big. down to 23% containment this morning from 51%, and that's because of the winds. the u.s. forest service calling the fire behavior unprecedented. more than 1300 fire personnel are now working on this fire. the fire was sparked by lightning back on august 17th. it has been burning mostly in the forest every since. one supervisor is now blaming the forest service for not getting the fire under control sooner. bill connolelconnelly told sacr bee, they let this fire smolder for weeks. they could have put it out. we're paying the price. a spokesmen said they asked for more resources. if you look at the map on your screen, it is clear why resources are stretched so very thin. these are all the fires burning in the u.s. rit now. now, i reached out to the

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is joining us live from san jose. and, kris, i understand you've learned about a possible incident, what may have happened before that shooting happened? >> reporter: yes. now we know that there was another shooting that police investigated right at the same location where the other gun fire turned deadly. there is now a sixth victim in this. san jose police tell us that when their officers arrived around 10:00 last night they found five gunshot victims, and as officers were investigating they learned of that sixth victim that. person and three others were treated at the hospital and are expected to survive. but, sadly, two people died at the scene where they were gathered at a streetside memorial remembering a friend. at this point investigators don't know if the shooting is related to that memorial or an active retaliation or related to gun activity or gang violence i should say. only that it was the second shooting police investigated at that same spot last night. >> heard five shots go off, then heard a bunch of s
