bernie sanders set to formally enter presidential race within the next hour.h and ted cruz are courting hispanic vote this week. on capitol hill presidential politics threatened to derail a bipartisan bill. joining me live now nbc news political editor. thanks for joining us. let's talk about senator bernie sanders. what type of threat is he to hillary clinton? >> politics is unpredictable. i think it is a safe bet that bernie sanders will not be next president of the united states and very far to the left. the entrance to the race is very important because bernie sanders is going to talk about issues that progressives want to hear about, the elizabeth warren wing of the party supporting medicare for all style health care plan. he wants to expand social security. he is also going to talk about issues like breaking up big banks and money in politics two things that can be trouble for hillary clinton on the left. i think it is really worth watching how he approaches this. now, so far he hasn't really taken very explicit aim at hillary clinton. he says this race

bernie is not a big -- senator sanders is not big on the social issues.he was going to give a speech like senator clinton gave yesterday about criminal justice. his big issues are mainly about -- very focused on economics. he's going to talk about the idea that if the six biggest banks should be broken up completely. that's something both president obama and senator clinton have opposed to far. so i'm expecting him to talk about these big populist sort of unlikely to happen ideas about economic policy that can kind of -- he wants to use his campaign as a forum for those ideas and not necessarily a forum for becoming the democratic nominee or winning the presidency. >> and interesting, alex because the senator is a big champion of cleaning up the financial messes and big banks and the involvement of big money in campaigns and certainly hillary clinton is very interested in getting -- for example, she has a campaign fund-raiser tonight. so maybe he won't be touching on some of the issues that would hurt her but just in general, i think what he's going to be
