joining us now is sandy phillips, the mother of one of those victims from aurora. 24-year-old jessica gowy. sandy is the co-founder of survivors empowered and the author of "tragedy in aurora, the culture of mass shootings in america." thank you for being here. >> thank you for inviting me. i truly appreciate it. >> sandy, the ripple effect of trauma after any mass shooting affects all of us in this country but, of course, particularly people who have already lived it, like you. what happens in your house when you hear about this mass shooting in boulder? >> well, yesterday when i heard the first part of the news and started reaching out to people that we work closely with on the ground in colorado, getting tidbits of information, you go into that fight mode immediately. at least i do. it took about an hour for me to really kind of feel again. of course, you always go back to the phone call that you received. and then you realize that there are so many of us survivors out there that are suffering again being retraumatized again by this story. so i went right into work mode and tried t

after the 2012 sandy hook massacre in connecticut, the nra called for schools to arm themselves.s comes as the nra is now actually in a deeply weakened state. it filed for bankruptcy last year after new york state attorney general letitia james sued them for fraud, saying the nra's chief executive officer, wayne lapierre, and other top officials broke state and federal laws to enrich themselves and their families. lapierre and the nra were major supporters of president trump. now president biden is calling on congress to pass new gun restrictions. in fact, calling on congress to pass an assault weapons ban. for more on the role of the nra and how we got here and what could happen next, we are joined by longtime investigative journalist frank smyth, author of the book "the nra: the unauthorized history." former arms-trafficking investigator for human rights watch and has reported on the group for decades. welcome back to democracy now! frank, it is great to have you with us again. give us a history of the nra and how it is possible now after these two mass shootings in a week that

senator murphy and i were in sandy hook the afternoon of that massacre. we lived through an excruciatingly heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, stunning experience but nothing compared to the children who were taken out of the school. nothing compared to the teachers who shepherded them. nothing compared to anyone who lived through it or the emergency spoanders who had -- responders who had to see the sea of carnage that day, and, of course, nothing approaching the trauma of parents and loved ones. so our club, as he called it, is one that pales in significance to the club of survivors and victims. it is more than the names we read tonight. it is the children who take cover when that code is rung, it is the teachers who suffer the apprehension of wondering whether that day will be the one when there is a shooter. it is the parents of all children who send their kids to school and wonder whether at the end of the day they will see them again. at some level. maybe not all. maybe not always. not every day, but that fear in the gut, that powerfully important apprehe

sandy hook, aurora, littleton, columbine in colorado alone. sandy hook in connecticut and what happened in tucson to gabby gifford. >> i think what you will hear from president biden when he addresses what happened in colorado is a president who takes on that all too familiar role of consoler. we have seen this increasingly over the past several years. several administrations, former president trump, former president obama both dealt with mass shootings like this. we will hear from president biden. and in the wake of the shootings in atlanta which he and vice president harris have been addressing in recent days. the question becomes what happens next. we know there is legislation that has passed through the house that would extend background checks. senate majority leader chuck schumer vowing to bring that up for a vote on the floor. they are discussing it today in hearings in the senate. it is not clear president biden will use this moment to introduce some new broad piece of legislation for stiffer gun laws, but we do know as a candidate he

i'm asked often, what has changed since sandy hook? we have a growing grassroots political movement with leaders at the local level changing history. and we have house members who have run on this issue, who have not just answered questions, they made it a priority. so i think the implosion of the n.r.a., the growing support among the american people and the inevitability of increased support gives us an opportunity we haven't had before. we need not only background checks and closing the charleston loophole but also emergency risk protection orders, safe storage, ethan's law, repeal of placa, a number of measures that provide a comprehensive solution. there's no single cure, but i think we can do it with the kind of support that we're seeing this morning. and i'm very pleased now and honored to introduce one of the true champions of gun violence protection -- do you want to -- my mentor and model and leader, senator schumer of new york. meaningful gun legislation with senator chris murphy who worked hard for reform after the killings at sandy hook elementary. we're joined by a survivor of this latest horror in just a moment and we'll bring you up to the minute on the investigation. but before we do. >> no, sir, we want to focus on those whose lives were taken so savagely yesterday. this is rikki olds. she was the front-end manager at kingery soopers and was at work yesterday when the shooting began. friends called her a strong, vie vicious, vicious woman. her uncle called her a shining light in this dark world. ricky olds was 25-year-olds. denny strong also worked at king surpz grocery store. according to "the new york times," people knew him told the "times" he was one of the kindest people around. denny strong was 20. tra loan in a bartkowiak was called l"lona" by her friends, and she had many of them. according to the denver post, she owned a clothing shop in boulder. her brother told "the new york times" she had simply stopped by the supermarket to pick up her subscription when she was shot. officer eric talley was the

it's hard to imagine something more horrific than sandy hook. we all remember, you know, that day at the end of 2012. we all remember the families walking the halls of congress in 2013. vice president biden right then at their side through many of this and even then, there was bipartisan support, there was not enough to get a background bill check passed. now, the house just a couple weeks ago has passed an expansion of background checks, so that now is waiting in the senate. the question here is, you know, this requires 60 votes of the senate or it requires the elimination of the filibuster, and brianna, this is something that we're going to be talking about again and again. under the biden presidency, a president who's spent really his life's work in the u.s. senate, is this the time when the old rules of the senate filibuster, which requires a 60-vote margin to pass anything, are they going to go away? and something on gun control, something on voting reforms, other issues could push that in that direction. again, it depends how much the pres

once in 2013 after sandy hook and once in 2015. both of those times, that bill does not go nearly as far as the house universal background check bill that senator manchin just said he doesn't support, but when those two bills -- when that bill was brought up in the senate, both times it got the support of just two republicans. only two of those republicans remain in the senate, senator susan collins and senator pat toomey. so democrats have said -- democratic leader schumer has said he plans, regardless of where republicans stand, regardless of where senator manchin stands, he's going to bring the two house bills, gun bills up for a vote on the senate floor to see where people stand. so that is not an exercise to get them to the president's desk. it's an exercise in getting people on the record, and that's also a big signal that schumer and democrats think the public is on their side, not only on the policy but politically on these gun issues, kasie. >> and that's exactly what i wanted to ask you about, because the reality is, and

this has to be a moment where we don't just do what we did at sandy hook. i was driving my kid home from his first year of college over christmas break and we were listening to the radio, and the sandy hook news was breaking. we were both just sitting there crying, it was so shocking. it seems like, something should happen now, and nothing happened. i am ashamed of that because we need to do more. other people have spoken eloquently about gun control and i'm going to leave them, but i am absolutely committed to passing common sense gun regulations. i am very interested in an assault weapons ban and other measures that will reduce the access to deadly firearms. i want to speak particularly because i see a lot of questions about this, about the mental health crisis we have in this country. colorado is one of the worst states in terms of access to mental health care and mental health outcomes. we have to do both because there is a nexus between mental health and gun violence. that mostly plays out in suicide, in which colorado is one of the leaders in the nati
