this harkens back or has echoes to the murders in sandy hook. president biden was then vice president biden. he's often referred to as one of the worst if not the worst of the eight years he and president obama were in office. he was also president obama's point person on efforts to take legislative action in response to that shooting, efforts that fell short. he mentions those efforts often. he's attempted to move through gun restrictions that have been blocked by senate republicans over the course of his time in office. it is likely he will make a new push for those. white house officials still making clear they're wait forget more details, more information about what's transpired. but there's no question about it. as the president commemorated or tried to remember the ninth anniversary of the sandy hook shootings just a couple of months ago. he said we need more than prayers, we owe these families action. something you will likely hear him echo again tonight as the white house and the president continue to get more information about this horr

we should note, if you go back to sandy hook shooting, remember that sandy hook elementary school was locked down totally, completely locked down and only way that adam was able to get in the school is because his mom worked there and because his mom worked there, that was part of the motivation, he hated his mother, killed his mother and wanted to exact revenge because the school treated her fairly. he was able to go there as the mother's son and they let him in the school and that is the way he got in. it is interesting how you look at different scenarios and how the intent was there. we don't know, we just know the shooter in this case ended up in his car near the school and went into the school and opened fire. police have not talked about motive or intent. we're in the early process of uncovering his social media footprint. none of it is confirmed. you don't want to go with anything you don't know is confirmed. in the next couple hours, we'll have a much better picture of what this guy was going through in the days and weeks that led up to this and that will give us a better idea

this is the deadliest shooting obviously in an elementary school since the sandy hook massacre one decadego. >> a family member confirms to cnn that eve have a mireles a fourth grade teacher was killed in this shooting. none of the victims' identities have been released by police. it was a nightmare for so many parents with children at robb elementary. many of them waiting helplessly into the night with no word about the fate of their sons and daughters. >> it is a nightmare and an ongoing nightmare for so many of the families. i'm joined by shimon prokupecz here in uvalde. i just want to start with that really tough fact to digest which is that these family members are giving dna samples to help match with the murdered children. >> that means that these injuries are pretty gruesome. these little bodies shot, indications that perhaps they are having a hard time identifying them so they need dna from these families and just how difficult that must be for these family members. many of them who went home after spending hours at the center here trying to get word of their kids, their grandkid

it was used in sandy hook. it was used in uvalde. not raise the minimum age of purchase from 18 to 21. >> governor: you've seen some states do that. you've seen it in flore in flor, and you have seen that in california, but it was held as unconstitutional. ultimately, i think the supreme court is going to give us guidance on it. you look at ar-15 -- >> brennan: but you would endorse that? >> governor: no -- i want to give a little more history. ar-15s were around for 40 years before they were ever used in any type of mass killing or attack. and so it is about the human heart. it is about identifying the culprits and going after them. >> brennan: uh-huh. >> governor: i think it is a discussion you can have. i come down on the point that that is not going to be the solution. and it's going to cause more harm than good. in arkansas, for example, as you pointed out, the long rifles, we distinguish those. and those you can acquire at 18 because we hunt with those. it is a culture that we start when we're 14 or 15 here in arkansas. that's

very similar to this at sandy hook. and i became deeply invested in this mission. and i now lead texas dance. and that's also been around for that length of time. we have seen ongoing weakening of our already last done last year in texas during the legislative sessions that we've been a part of. we watched the passage of open carry a hand guns in 2015 along with campus kerry, which neither of which had broad public support. and, and this last legislative session, we saw lawmakers remove licensing and training requirements to carry a loaded gun in public in the state. we are joined by other states state legislatures during the same thing and the data out of the states that have passed that laws. some years back is not looking good. there's a rise of homicide. so we have reason to be concerned about in the face of escalating gun violence with more than 4000 texans having died from guns in c, d, 's most recent 2020 data. and then we have this horrific incident today, which is we're adding this to the list of some of the most high profile mass shootings that have taken
