protesters in san jose today called for a stop to evictions in santa clara county during the pandemiconstrators representing 30 bay area tenant rights groups blocked the entrance to the santa clara county courthouse. some of them stood locked arm in arm in front of the entrances. the protestors are demanding the court halt all eviction proceedings. and for the sheriff's department to stop carrying out evictions during the pandemic. they also want state lawmakers to pass a stronger eviction moratorium and close loopholes that they say exist in the current regulation. parents aren't really protected. there's way too much. there are way too many loopholes in existing and proposed laws. and so we need to make sure that we stop all evictions. me the sheriff's to stop forcing lockouts when he stopped eviction hearings here at the court. the protesters say there are up to 30 evictions every week in santa clara county. this despite the state's current moratorium on evictions during the pandemic that state lawmakers are now working to extend for more. we're joined now. by amy fishman, executiv

anywhere version of the virus is being linked to multiple outbreaks in santa clara county. the variant was first identified last year and is different than the fast spreading variant racing across the uk. out of 88 cases detected nationwide, 40 are in california including san francisco and 10 other counties. researchers at ucsf announced they are working to determine whether the vaccine is effective for this strain. >> it is very preliminary but it basically does raise the concern that there may be some impact on the vaccine. certainly much more work needs to be done in a laboratory. we do not know about transmissibility. we do not know whether it is more infectious. >> the variant has been around for some time now in the bay area, as early as last may. it was also linked to the outbreak at a kaiser hospital in san jose around christmas that sickened or the 90 staff and patients. >> that was a very unusual outbreak with a lot of illnesses and it seemed to be spreading quite fast. we are trying to understand whether the features of that outbreak are because of this variant.

devin fhely has some tough questions this evening for santa clara county health officials. >> reporter: public health officials want to frame today's update as a success story but here's the reality, three weeks, three weeks after the vaccines first arrived here in the county and more than 75,000 doses of those vaccines are sitting in a freezer somewhere and have not made it into anyone's arm. >> we got as far as we have in a relatively short period of time. >> reporter: more than 47,000 people have received their first dose of the vaccine in santa clara county. people like amy luna who works in the dentist office. >> with our patients we want to make sure that they feel safe and comfortable, so having the shot and being able to provide that comfort is a good sense. >>> the poison thousand initial doses of the vaccine are just a fraction of the county's overall supply. so far they have received nearly 123,000 doses. meaning 62%, nearly 2/3 have not yet been used. >> all the vaccine is not the arms of everyone but there are working very hard. >> he says the rollout of the vaccine has be

in front of the santa clara county courthouse. er to keep everyone out the idea if the state and county won't stop evictions, they will not ovation during a pandemic. evictions of deadly addictions are violent 30 tenants, rights groups showed and move off of this property. we're gonna get arrested like everybody, protesters say, vic they're still happening here. despite the current eviction moratorium in santa clara county, the sheriff says she's powerless to stop once unrelated to the pandemic. people need safe, stable housing during the pandemic on we need real relief for the debt that tenants are building up over the course of the last year. the question is, will the new proposed look the state level bring real relief? it will extend the eviction moratorium through june and would use federal funds paying off 80% of unpaid rent if landlords will forgive the remainder. so you know, we do believe that this is something we need to do for tenants. that really are eligible and are really hurting, but we haven't provided a good balance

this is santa clara county. so far it's administered about 185,000 doses. the county says that's about 65% of its allotment. 8% of people who live in santa clara county have now gotten at least one shot. in contra costa county, 114,000 doses have been administered. 10% of their population has received its first dose. 2% has gotten both doses. that makes them fully vaccinated. >> well, that third vaccine is almost here, but the question now, will people want to get it? today johnson & johnson says its vaccine is only one shot and it can be kept simply in a refrigerator. it's 66% effective in a global trial at preventing moderate to severe illness. here's the rub. the other two vaccines from pfizer and moderna are 95% effective. this poses some interesting questions. let's bring in dr. monica gandy, infectious disease specialist at ucsf. doctor, nice to have you back on the program. let's be real here. if i have a choice between the johnson & johnson at 66%, compared to the other two at 95%, wouldn't i choose the other two every time? >> you may choose the oth
