and this case is directly tied to two santa cruz schools.e la vega has now talked to the principals of both those schools and joins us now live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're here at santa cruz high school and parents and students are just learning about this arrest. this is one of the schools where the suspect was following two girls who were running here. they were able to take down the license plate number of the car and that's what helped police capture the suspect. here are two photographs showing the different looks of 31-year-old joshua paul jails. he was arrested on -- james. he was arrested on child pornography and child annoying and stalking. on monday, two girls running on the track tale reported a suspicious man following them in a car. a neighbor also noticed a man filming people at the pacific collegiate girl the same day as well as tuesday. the police linked the two together because the car descriptions were similar and they were able to track dune james. >> we're greatlily concerned. we're happy he's behind b

in the mean times james has been booked into the santa cruz county jail.ews. >>> richmond police investigating two threatening letters sent to a high school as a possible hate crime. one letter started by saying and i'm quoting, your so-called students are a nuisance at the plaza where my business is located. it also says, quote, i can only hope and pray the next school shooting happens real soon. the high schools now have increased campus security and also alerted parents about those threats. >> we do take them seriously when they come in because you never know what the next steps could be. the number one thing the district has to do is assure the safety of kids before we can even teach. >> the first letter arrived september 12. the second one came a week later. police believe both letters came from the same person. investigators are now questioning business owners near the high school as they continue to search for suspects. >>> police in berkley are renewing their push for stun guns. berkley's police officers union says stun guns would give officers an

>> santa cruz county ranked in the top three for having the highest truancy rate in the state. we don't know the exact numbers at this particular school. we do know truancy starts as early as elementary school. in a new report released today, state attorney general pamela harris says taken dance in schools in california -- attendance in schools in california is at a crisis level. the department of education finds one out of every five elementary schoolchildren were reported to be truant in the 2011 to 1212 school year. a student is considered truant if they're absent or tardy by more than 30 minutes without a valid excuse three times in a school year. studies find that students who miss school at an early age are more likely to struggle academically and drop out entirely once they're older. schools are funded based on school attendance and research shows school districts lose 1.4 billion a year because of truancy. the cost is even higher when other components are factored in like the cost of incarceration for school dropouts, the loss of economic productivity and tax revenue. h

this is in the santa cruz mountains. they say the car caught fire, one person died at the scene and two others were air lifted to the hospital. no word on their condition yet this morning. right now, it appears only one car was involved and the cause of the crash is under investigation. >> this morning, fire crews are still at the scene of a brush fire that burned dangerously close to a neighborhood in south san francisco. this happened near hillside boulevard in chestnut avenue around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. the fire quickly spread and burned about 40 acres on the south side of san bruno mountain. the fire drew resoiurces from tn different agencies, helicopters and more than 50 firefighters on the ground. in the end, crews managed to keep the fire away from the homes but dozens of people had to evacuate their homes. >> with this heat, you know, you hear the fire at yosemite, you know -- look, i have a goosebump here, just the thought of it. it's very scary. >> can't blame her. fire crews spent all last night and plan

new this morning investigators in santa cruz county are looking for victims of a possible child molester from a decade ago. the sheriff deputies arrested this man, on tuesday. he has illegal conduct with two children 10 years ago at a christian school in live oakland where he worked as a bus driver. investigators believe there could be other victims in the area and they are asking anyone with information please give them a call. >> developing news in the east bay, where investigators are working to determine the identity of a body found in hayward in the yard of a vacant home at 2:00 this morning. police say the man was dead for less than 24 hours. he was between the ages of 25 and 30 years old. he may been homeless. the cause of death is under investigation. >> happening now in the south bay the c.h.p. is investigating an accident involving a school bus and a minivan in san jose. investigators say the school bus was transporting four special needs students to the campbell community center when the crash happened. the students were all adults and taken to the hospital with minor injuries

we do know santa cruz county ranked the top three in the state for having the highest truancy rate.in a new report released today, pamela harris, school superintendent, says attendance is at crisis levels and it's causing consequences for our economy, safety and children. the department of education finds that one out of every five elementary schoolchildren were reported to be truant in the 2011-2012 school year. a student is considered truant if they're absent or tardy by more than 30 minutes without a valid excuse three times in a school year. studies find students who miss school at an early age are more like lookly to struggle academically and drop out entirely once they're older. here is the breakdown for the bay area as far as truancy rates go. contra costa county ranks among the highest at 29%. alameda county is at 23%. going down to santa clara county. that is at 14%. and among those with the low (exí rates are -- lowest rates are marin and solano counties. student funding is actually based on school attendance so coming up in the next half- hour, i'll tell you how much it's
