saphier, would you take that? >> dr. saphier: absolutely.ect, those are the current guidelines from the cdc. seven days after testing positive or 70s after symptoms began, having three days fever free without the use of motrin and tylenol, it indicates you cn go back to work after that point. i would say as long as she's not having symptoms and is following the recommendations of the cdc, that's the best she can do. i did want to touch on that first question you were discussing. governor cuomo and his conference today said that there were about 6,000 new yorkers hospitalized with covid-19, and about 1500 in the icu utilizing the ventilators, per se. that being said, there are still thousands more ventilators potentially available. what we are seeing, though, as governor cuomo said, there's potentially going to be a peak in cases in a few more weeks. although we are at 1500 now, as long as we are still seeing increasing cases, that could mean increasing ventilators needing to be used. as we know, covid-19 patients are having to stay on the ve

saphier, are you concerned about that at all? >> dr. saphier: harris, it's an excellent point.s to decrease transmission of the virus. this virus seems to be more dangerous for the elderly, the grandparents that may take care of the children. it's not uncommon to have school closures, especially in flu season. we see it all the time. however, we don't want to prematurely close down all of the school systems if it means to contain a virus. it's important, if the children are home, who is going to take care of the parents? if the whole purpose is to protect the elderly population, you have to think of the parents meeting to now stay home. they won't be able to go to work. so there are long-term sequela that we need to take a pause before we start shutting down school systems. >> harris: let's toggle back to the medical professionals. they on the first responders are on the front lines, and you brought in some things i've asked you to bring in as props. can we start with the masks? what we're hearing from the u.s. surgeon general, adams, is saying, "you've got to to have these." f

saphier, i know you get the question a lot.re told masks won't work, now homemade masks are capable of warding off the coronavirus. first of all, are homemade masks capable of warding off the virus and should people be wearing them? >> the reason in the beginning that we said that people should not be wearing masks unless they were symptomatic was because we didn't want to happen what is happening now where we have a shortage of masks for health care workers. the only proven effective mask to decrease tran transmission oe particles are the n95 or respiratory masks. because the virus are in the respiratory droplets, if you were to having covering your face it would decrease the transmission of the large respiratory droplets. does it bring the risk to zero? absolutely not. at this point if we are social distancing, if you want a makeshift mask with multiple layers, you decrease the risk of infection. having one layer over your face isn't doing much. when people make masks, they have a false sense of security, they tend to do thin
