nicole saphier, should you vaccinate your five-year-old?es, weighed out the risks, to answer the question simply, should we, doctor? >> here is the bottom line with vaccinating young kids. if the kid has a comorbidity, they have not had covid in the past, yes, those are the kids who have died. remember it has been about 94 out of 28 million. so the risk is very low either way. if a kid had natural immunity, no. by the way the cdc said it was 42% of kids back in june. it is north of 50% of kids today. that is a lot of kids with natural immunity. so it is small sliver of kids who have no immunity and are not, don't have comorbidities. that is healthy. it is an individual choice. we don't have good data to guide whether or not those benefit outweigh the risk for boys. it is probably even. i myself would never recommend a second vaccine dose in that population given the little data we have. jackie: dr. makary you and i gone back and forth about this one particular issue a lot, natural immunity how it adds to the population that essentially has

nicole saphier deals with this everyday , and comes on television to talk about it., we have to remember that throughout the entire course of the pandemic we're communicating a lot of uncertainties and especially it it comes to omicron a lot of things people are hearing is conjecture so let's talk about what we know. this new variant, omicron, as you've mentioned, it's a notice that has about 32 mutations in the spike proteins and other areas of the virus. it's important to remember alpha , beta, delta, they all had mutations about 10-15 in the spike protein as well, omicron just has a combination of it so the big questions are, is it more contagious? is it going to cause more severe disease and will it escape immunity? the truth is we don't know right now. this all started because south africa noticed a rise in cases. that's good news. it wasn't a rise in severe illness or deaths and in fact, they were pointing out a lot of mild symptoms associated with this , fatigue, joint pain, not cough, shortness of breath and the loss of taste and smell and this did circulate

nicole saphier for more. this week. what should parents do? >> that's right. the advisory committee for the cdc is meeting now. they've been the last few hours. the big topicses are efficacy and safety of this vaccine in childrens ages 5-11 years old. we know now from ample data, there's efficacy up until 12 years of age. they were able to demonstrate that 5-11. it prevented symptomatic infection in this young age group. we move on to the safety data. was there enough evidence to show that the vaccine would be safe in the young kids? i will say it was a smaller cohort and they were not able to determine the more rare side effects like the myocarditis that we saw in the adolescents. when it came to the immediate immerse events from the vaccine, we saw fevers, other common side effects. the question parents need to ask, do their children need the vaccine. these are questions that the cdc needs to talk about. ultimately it's up to the cdc director whether or not she will give the go-ahead and what her formal rec
