gray davis had political missteps, which then opened the way for arnold schwarzenegger, a very charismatic, hollywood known personality to enter. here we saw political missteps again from gavin newsom. gavin newsom just fit that stereotype that is given for democrats, a limousine liberal where there was already murmurs of there being a recall among republicans among that trump base. when we see that dinner at the french laundry, when we find out that his kids were actually in in-person school, it just is fodder for that. now that is -- into very much a referendum on trumpism in california. >> matthew, despite the evidence that in georgia it may have suppressed republican voter turnout and resulted in the election of two democrats to the u.s. senate, do you really believe republicans are going to make this -- the election is rigged well in advance part of their brand? >> well, i think the answer to that is it's become part of their dna, and it's not really any more about donald trump. it's become an inherent part of the republican playbook or message thing or whatever to undermine our democ

but look at this, arnold schwarzenegger's favorable rating in the 2003 recall was 51%. elder very unpopular, very different than where we were 18 years ago when air tolrnold schwarzenegger was above water. >> and so this recall picked up steam really with covid issues and surrounding governor newsom's policies on covid. what did voters say about that? >> feelings on the governor's coronavirus policies and the recall vote, newsom's policies are about right or not actually strict enough, 63% of voters felt that way. 63. and of those who felt that way, how did they vote on the recall? 85% of them voted no. larry elder tried to make such an issue arguing that the governor's policies were too strict, voters didn't feel that way and because they didn't feel that way, they overwhelmingly voted no on the recall. >> they liked what his policies are doing on covid there as opposed to what larry elder ran on. even on issues that you might think would have been good for elder and people trying to toss newsom, what did that show here? >> you know, larry elder made such a big deal of

if you think about arnold schwarzenegger, he was a very moderate republican. the environmental regulations and the environmental protections we have in the state. he's really to the left of a lot of national democrats both in the double zeros, but if you look at joe manchin and kyrsten sinema, arnold is to the left of them. what you're seeing is the impact of trump on the gop. it's not just the case where they'd rather win with -- i mean rather lose with an extremist rather than win with a moderate. it feels to me that they'd rather lose than be boring. i mean that seems to be what's fueling a lot of this. they would rather lose than be boring and they're really aiming everything at a fox news audience rather than the electorate in california. and so it's really quite dangerous that we have one national party that has gone this direction. >> yeah. it's interesting when you put it that way, that really kind of captures it, chai. is there a movie with arnold that speaks to this moment? >> i would like to think it would actually be "kindergarten cop." arnold goes

it's interesting, just had this conversation with schwarzenegger, i know where rapidfire, governor schwarzeneggerwas laser focused on unity. i completely agree with that and i would love for this country to come together to satisfy the ship set aside a difference but i think frankly we can't do that with open wounds and with an absent accountability and shining a light on the big lie, on the covid mismanagement that emerge out of the house republicans -- i'm sorry, senate republicans failing to hold the president accountable. all of these things need to be dealt with so we could come together as a country. >> next rapid question for the audience. what you think trump will do it would be elected in 2024 and you think he is an aberration or assigns of the gop? >> i think it's -- i don't think he's viable in 2024. i don't think he's viable in 2024 primarily because he continues to get smaller and smaller slivers of the pie, and that's just not a winning strategy. but trumpism is alive and well and prospering, anything in a lot of ways what you have is, you know, a further radicalization of once hono

larry elder knows arnold schwarzenegger.g. do you think newsom is benefiting from the fact that as elder's profile is increased, people are looking at the question whether they want to recall and realizing we can't have this crazy person running the largest economy of america. >> i am not sure i can comment on larry elder, what he knows or not. he said different things and expressed different things to the audience. governor newsom trying to make the possibility of someone like larry elder, specifically elder taking over the state. he's the primary message. that's how he tries to motivate his base and come out and cast those ballots. whether or not that message is resonating. we are dealing with and seeing an election where every voter and active registered voters will mail in their ballots. that's a huge shift. people have been sending their ballots back more than a week now. a couple of weeks and so we are in the final stretch many voters may be waiting to cast their ballots in person. there is a lot of influx and whether

the gap between democrats and republicans since when schwarzenegger won 18 years ago to now is three times as many more democrats over republicans. it's just not a competitive state and to suggest that somehow this election is going to probably go according to those numbers and that it's fraudulent just really isn't credible. in someways i would hope that the president is hurting his own cause of perpetuating these conspiracies by attaching it. so it will probably be a comfortable win tomorrow for the governor. >> let me ask you, rob, this is your perspective. larry elder had a very different view of biden's 2020 presidential victory. in the sacramento bee's editorial he said i do believe joe biden won the election fairly and scarquarely. he said the truth. a few years later he said i want a mulligan and says i didn't believe that. so is this actually just like that is maybe the perfect example of what it is to be a republican running for office? you have to knowingly lie about something so fundamental to get the backing of their own party? >> that should be the concern or at least t
