. -- scott broom is live in east baltimore. he has more on the investigation as it goes forward. >> reporter: the house behind me was the rock, the home base for an unusually large extended family. and it was the matriarch of that family and four of her grandchildren who died here overnight last night in a fire that broke out at about 2:00 this morning. that matriarch was 55-year-old nancy ruell according to family members. the four grandchildren were ages 4 to 7. they're all gone. the bodies were found huddled together in a single room on the second floor in the back of the house. there was a rescue attempt by firefighters before dawn that was beyond heroic and ended up with two firefighters injured. one of them fell three levels through flames when the second floor collapsed from under him. he landed on top of another firefighter who was down in the basement. boat were rescued by cool -- both were rescued by colleagues and are in stable condition with burns. the cause of the fire here unknown at this time, but it was clearly

scott broom is keeping an eye on the floods there, scotty? >> reporter: well, the headline in frederick county tonight is that the flood warning has just expired on the monocacy river. i'm on the banks of the potomac loudoun county on the other side here here in brunswick maryland, you can't even see the river back there. but the potomac, the upper potomac it too is dropping. take a look at some of the pictures these are from point of rocks, maryland. where the river crested earlier today. at 18.1 feet. that's 2 feet above flood stage. but as i said it's dropping elsewhere in the county the monocacy river still made for some rather spectacular snapshots. but since those pictures were taken the river has dropped substantially. the warning there expired. meanwhile, here in the town of brunswick, yeah they dodged a bullet on flooding but they just got walloped and i mean walloped with wind damage here. at one point during the storm the whole town was cutoff and lots of trees down. the elementary school was closed today. they're hoping to reopen

scott broom is live tonight with montgomery county mison what changed then and what we have now, scott? >> reporter: there is one technology tool in particular that has been deployed here in montgomery county in just the past couple of years that many here are absolutely convinced would have lead them to those d.c. snipers a whole lot more quickly. one technology is just astounding and you may have seen these on the road. this is an automatic license plate reader. it can record and scan literally thousands of plates per day. deployed here in montgomery county just two years ago. these did not exist when they were terrorizing our region. if it had existed, police could have searched the data collected as they responded to shootings to automatically scour thousands of license plates seen near the scenes and match up plates seen multiple times. literally teasing out a needle from the hay stack. likely identifying that blue chevy caprice the snipers were working from much earlier. >> we had a mountain of information coming in from all different sources. if we had it coming through the lice

reporting live in hanover, maryland, scott broom, 9 news now. >>> people up and down the east coast are tracking hurricane sandy and this video is just in from cuba as residents there are preparing for the storm. people in one proffiness were trimming trees, cleaning -- province were trimming trees and cleaning out drains. i'm in the weather center and everybody wants to know what's the latest track for the storm. >> the track has not changed much the next two days. of that it becomes more interesting. let's start with the satellite picture, very well defined eye as it went over kingston, jamaica, essentially over king stop, jamaica, with 80 mile-per- hour winds and 100 mile-per- hour gusts still a category 1 storm, but that's a pretty intense storm when it hits you directly. now it's headed for the eastern part of cuba, hurricane warnings in effect there as well as central bahamas. you can see the eye that formed just as it rolled across kingston, jamaica. so it's a pretty well organized storm. because of that we already have tropical storm warnings from ocean reef to sebastian inlet f
