michael brown eric gardner walter scott, freddie gray are names that know but knowing names is just not enough. we need a sustained effort from congress and every institution to address the chasm between young people and especially young people in communities of color and the police hired to keep them safe. and let's remember while the country was transfixed with the video of the cop, the teenagers and the pool party in texas, two of my constituents were shot and killed this past weekend in chicago. they were among five dead in chicago and among 27 people shot from friday to monday. at least five people were killed and 25 others were shot in and around chicago the weekend before, 12 dead and 56 wounded over the long memorial day weekend. knowing the names of sandy hook newtown and columbine are not when baltimore, chicago and other cities are also using young people mostly young people at this rate. it goes beyond police strategies and easily -- it goes beyond practices and the easy availability of guns but that's part of it. when legislators spend more time making guns easier to carry

you know, you can look at dred scott and then you can look at where the court was at brown.and you see an evolution. you see a growth. the same thing as you look at kind of the marriage equality cases, right? you can see where we were even when windsor happened to kind of where we are now. and while i would like to believe, and i think most americans like to believe that somehow the court is a part of our system that's untouchable, that you can't reach, thaw can't touch, somehow they are not connected to all of us broadly, they are. they are real people. they look at the news. they are connected and they pay attention to the arc of human history. and so something in me believes that the roberts court particularly chief -- the chief justice here, will -- is looking and paying attention to the way that people are continuing to lose faith in the institution of the court as a whole, as a separate kind of independent, above politics body. and i think that that's a real concern for this chief justice, as it should be. because we see the 10% approval rate for congress. i'm a former
