scott gottlieb great to see you, thanks for joining us shame it's not quite in person but nearly therell drastically change the rates of vaccination or is that really defined by other factors at this stage? >> i don't think it's going to change the equation for a lot of employers. previously the eoc had issued guidance saying businesses could require vaccination. this seems to be a more binding recommendation but i don't think it's going to change the equation in terms of businesses thinking about requiring vaccination. a lot of businesses seem reluctant to do that right now right now large businesses are surveying their employees and seeing how many are actually getting vaccinated and if they have a sufficiently high level of vaccination among their employees, i think they'll be reluctant to mandate vaccination. you could see a lot of smaller employers start to do that, particularly employers that have employees that are consumer facing so restaurants, people who go into homes and provide services. i can see a situation where small private businesses require vaccination among their em

ranney, scott gottlieb, former fda commissioner, said it is time to start lifting some more restrictionsshould start lifting these restrictions as aggressive as we put them in. to implement provisions as we get into next winter if we see outbreaks again. the only way to earn credibility is to show you're willing to relax these situations when it proves. >> do you agree it's time to relax some restrictions? >> not yet. only 30%, 40% depending on where you are in the country of adult americans have been fully vaccinated. it is not time to get rid of indoor mask mandates, although many states have done that. that isn't what the public health data supports. you look at what israel did. they have gotten infections to virtually zero by waiting until the majority of their adult population was vaccinated before lifting mask mandates. now, the one exception is outdoor masking, we can start to lift those mandates. and the cdc, in fact, has recommended that. and i expect more indoor mask mandates will be lifted but it's going to be in another one or two months. not today. >> new cases are down. dea

scott gottlieb, a cnbc contributor it's good to have you on a friday, dr. the numbers continue to look better and better on cases, on deaths at what point in this country can we declare the pandemic over >> well, i'm not sure we're going to be able to declare it over i think we'll have a very quiet summer with respect to coronavirus spread and have to contend with it again as we head into the winter. right now we're at eight cases per 100,000 a day. the cdc calls low transmission 1 case at 100,000 people per day we're dropping a point every two or three days so next week we'll be around five cases per 100,000 people for day and as we get into june we might approach that one level. cases have plateaued in california i'm hopeful they'll continue to come down and we'll have very little coronavirus transmission as we get into the summer. certainly by june i think we're going to see that. >> a significant portion of the u.s. population, though, dr. gottlieb, is not vaccinated and will not get vaccinated, that's a fact yet you're citing some numbers showing that t

scott gottlieb says we may never know for sure but he says lab leaks are actually more common than youf lab leaks happen all the time, actually, even here in the united states we've had mishaps, and in china the last six known outbreaks of sars-1 have been out of labs, including the last known outbreak which was a pretty extensive outbreak. >>> joining us now to share his expertise is dr. peter hotez, doctor, all the time? really? how common is a lab leak that turns into a major outbreak? >> yeah, i certainly would not say all the time. i think, you know, maybe what dr. gottlieb was referring to when the chinese were first trying to understand the original sars, sars-1, there was one small outbreak from the chinese cdc and there was an infected individual in singapore. and one in taiwan. but i wouldn't -- i would not say all the time. in fact, we put a lot of emphasis here in the united states, because we have several biosafety level 4 facilities, including one in boston, one in galveston, texas, near us, and then a couple of others where we provide a lot of assurances to the public th

scott gottlieb pointing out that there's a lot of circumstantial evidence that the virus may have originated the lab. you visited wuhan, the lab in question. take us behind the scenes. what was that like? >> reporter: going to wuhan is always an interesting experience. ive i've gone three times since the outbreak. what we saw the most recent time we went, january of this year, one year after the outbreak was really widespread in its reporting and one year since the lockdown, is that we were followed closely. and even as we drove by here as you're seeing the wuhan institute of virology, we had people following us in vehicles, likely government officials, not interfering with our reporting but certainly wanting to know what we were doing. as you look at the wuhan institute of virology, which is really the center point and heavy focus for this possible origin theory, you notice it's well fortified. there's a lot of security. us trying to go out of our vehicle and knock on the door to get in is simply not possible. we've made several requests, don, to speak to the researchers there, to speak to
