scott mcgrew is here to tell you why. >> epslon runs it software that helps your bank and company with blast e-mails. chase bank, best buy and other companies are sending out warnings like these that say it's possible a bad guy could use the information found to send out fake e-mails that look just like this one. in other words, be cautious. just because it appears to come from your bank does not mean it's from your bank. the data breach is probably the biggest in history. however, it appears only names and e-mail addresses were stolen, not bank information, financial information, that kind of thing. always be careful when an e-mail comes in asking for personal information. now, you need to be more careful because of this breach. that said, computers and e-mail are valuable. how valuable? $1700. economists figured out the added benefit of the existence of the personal computer in laptop, pc and all that. if you factor in the cost of the computer itself, it's $1,700 that is added to the quality of your life. now, it's particularly valuable for me. i'll take a few minutes to talk about c

scott mcgrew joins us now. scott, what secrets were given away? >> it's not completely clear, marla, not even to sony but it could be names and e-mails, possibly credit card numbers. this all comes as sony's playstation network enters its eighth day of outages. sony says it's the victim of a hacker attack. it's knocked games offline but also people who use the sony network to watch movies or listen to music. the company still has not been able to secure this network and will keep it offline until it can. now, sony's service is generally free, so there are fewer credit cards in that system than there are in, say, xbox live network or apple itunes, but it is a good reminder while you can secure your own computer, your personal information is mostly contained outside your own personal sphere on netflix and amazon.com. >>> speaking of paid services, reports say youtube will expand its offering of rental movies. this is a look at the current offerings. youtube has signed a deal with universal, which is part of this tv station's parent company, along wi

scott mcgrew joins us with more. >> at issue is san francisco's plan to tax stock options. that's a big deal if you're a pre-ipo tech company. san francisco agreed to exempt the company from taxes. this is not a done deal, though. under city charter supervisors have to approve this sort of thing twice in a row in two different meetings. it is possible even likely we'll see a broader tax exemption at the next supervisors meeting because other companies are saying, hey, what about us. >>> to the south bay, cisco ceo john chambers, one of the silicon valley's most respected leaders, has written an apology note of sorts saying the network giant disappointed investors and confused its own employees. cisco's biggest business is making the equipment that switches and routes internet traffic. but all of a sudden it has competition in that area and not as much money as governments cut back on i.t. spending. it started branching out to side businesses, like flip digital but that was a really strange purchase. cisco shares have fallen by a third in the last year. you compare that to a

scott mcgrew yesterday talked about cisco killing the flint video camera just seconds after the company made it official. now he's had a day or so to think about it and what are you thinking, mr. mcgrew? >> i'm not surprised cisco realized its purchase of a video camera company was a mistake, but the strange thing is how cisco handled the flip. it's not selling flip, even though several other companies would probably buy it. flip actually still sells well in the store. cisco is just killing it and it's laying off more than 500 employees, which after a day's reflection seems like a giant waste of talent and, yet, more money. after all sis so says it may have to take a $300 million writedown on this loss. $300 million is not that much money to cisco. ever set something aside like an old stereo saying you're going to sell it for 50 bucks on craigslist and six months later because the 50 bucks wasn't worth that much trouble? that's $300 million to cisco, but it's a shame. >>> here's some news that will make former fans of sharper image roll their eyes. scott mcgrew says new e-mails have come to light casting doubt once again on who owns facebook. >> just day after facebook got a controversy behind it, a different person from zuckerberg's past, a convicted fron named paul siglia pops back in. he has been in and out of court claiming he owns 80% of the business. siglia says he didn't remember that until just recently when he accidentally game across a contract proving it. he now says he's stumbled across old e-mails between then harvard student mark zuckerberg and himself, like this one, where zuckerberg complains siglia's 80% ownership is too much and says i'd like to suggest we officially return to a 50/50 ownership. facebook denies any of the e-mails are actually real. >>> the federal trade commission may look into complaints from parents that games and apps like farmville or the smurfs encourage kids to spend their parents' money. what happens is parents hand over the phone or the laptop to kids, not realizing when kids buy seeds on farmville or costumes or virtual goods, the parents are billed real money through paypal or itunes. t
