scott mcgrew joins us with a skiing gadget. >> i checked in with christina. said, not bad out there. i think she said 90 some inches still. so this gadget spring bake friday are the smith io goggles. they have a head's-up display inthem. they are like google glass, on the lower right-hand side, that black thing right there, gives you information about how fast you are traveling, what music is playing on your ipod or iphone. they are pricey, $650. here is video created by smith itself. the goggles record the gps data from your ski run. you can see it pop up just above the 655 in our nbc bug. it doesn't record video but will record all kinds of different data, which is kind of cool. it means you can take them home, plug anymore into i acomputer, see where on a map you skied and data about how fast you were going at the time. the bottom line is i feel like i have glimpsed the future. google was doing something similar with glasses. it is the future but it is not quite ready yet. these were difficult to use, specially with gloves, little control you put on your w

scott mcgrew, that apology coming from the ceo >>> this is the second time we have seen tim cook issue an apology. the first was well deserved for apple maps. this new apology is directed towards the people and the government of china. apple has been under fire in the press in china for short shifting chinese consumers, accused of offering the chinese sub standa substandard warrants on their apple product. that warranty is no less than the warranty you get for your iphone. considering how much of the criticism was coming directly from the chinese government through state-run media, it would appear apple took the safe route and apologized rather than ali alienate the world's biggest market. they apologized for appearing arrogant. their shares slid another 3% on the markets on monday. let's turn to bertha coombs for a look at the broader markets. good morning. >>> good morning. i apologize in advance for the fact that stocks were lower yesterday. this morning, we have the futures a little higher, scott. stocks did fall on monday just slightly. low volume. a number of markets in europe an

this is for scott mcgrew in the newsroom with the details.t look good. >> it looks absolutely terrible. there is thumb's down, and double thumb's down. what we are looking at is 88,000 jobs created in the month of march. the unemployment rate falls to 7.6% but as i tell you each month and i have for ten years, ignore the unemployment number, the percentage there. it is the number of jobs added in the month. so what in the world happened if economists were talking just a few minutes ago about 200,000 jobs they expected added in the month of march. that's something we'll have to look through, the numbers. the numbers came out, i mean, what, about 45 seconds ago. we're talking about the raw top-level numbers here. 88,000 jobs added. jo jon and laura, that's a terrible number. that's almost irrelevant. we are going to look at the participation rate, the number of people looking for new jobs must have fallen. we'll continue to look at these numbers and figure out what's going on. again, this is less than half of what most economists were looking f

. >> scott mcgrew joins us.he governor is limited on what sort of deals he can actually make. >> yes, that's true. states can't make their own independent deals with sovereign nations. brown, who is in china to push for better trade with california as best he can, was able to hammer out some sort of deal. california and china signed a deal to create a task force to find the best ways to boost trade and investment. now, china already hugely important to california. a third of all chinese exports to the u.s. either end up here or pass through california ports. and more than a third of all chinese educated in the united states are educated at a handful of california universities. the dow industrials hit another record tuesday. we're back to records after sort of sideways trading over the last few weeks. except the nikkei. money has been pouring into that market for reasons we discussed previously. here at home, jcpenney fell 12% following the ceo switcheroo. general motors will once again advertise on facebook. thi

scott mcgrew has been monitoring the situation. some lawyer at google getting a raise. >> i would think so. if the reports are right, a lawyer probably deserves a raise. google was facing major punishment over the way it delivered search results to users in europe. they were practically cackling with glee over the upcoming judgment coming from the european union. google has proposed a settlement with eu regulators. the regulators will likely say okay, which would get google off the hook. they are under fire forgiving you results that benefit itself. say you search for a restaurant. google will push down the yelp results in favor of its own reviews. the u.s. investigated the same thing. google escaped punishment there. the u.s. said, yeah, google is getty but nobody got hurt. yelp disagrees >>> to real estate, some high-risk mortgages are easier to get. mortgages with only 10% down are increasing. where is the money coming from? japan. japan central bank is dumping cash on the market in ways that would shock our own fed. so we conti

scott mcgrew joins us now. a lot of people are really confused about what this means for them.y californians, they pay sales tax when they buy online. first things first. you are always supposed to pay sales tax no matter what. you are just supposed to self-report and few people do that. you are absolutely correct. when californians buy something on amazon or best buy, those companies already include sales tax. so the senate bill would empower states to collect sales tax from any online purpose. ebay is one of the few companies against it saying it hurts small business. the law as written would exempt companies to do less than $1 million in sales outside their home state state. small business seems a bit bigger than you might have expected. there are lots of reasons not to like taxes. bottom line, in many cases, you were already paying them. in every case, you were ez spoed to supposed to be paying them. states and cities could collect $22 billion in new tax. the big business storiry y is g to be apple. investors are in a bad mood. no matter what the quarterly numbers are, do w

scott mcgrew brings us news. >> reporter: good morning, it starts with tesla, the ceo says he's got another big announcement coming tuesday, but this morning posted tesla already on track to be profitable in the first quarter. tesla says sales are better than expected. they say customers prefer buying the most expensive version of their new model s sedan. so many people, in fact, tesla is dropping the cheaper, lower range version of the sedan. of course cheap is $57,000. now, looking ahead, on friday we'll get the latest jobs data, monthly unemployment number. remember, these are the most important numbers there are. inflation would be second most important bit of data. then a day before that, thursday, we've got facebook. they will announce new software. we do expect it will be more than an android app but a whole version of android software for your phones soup to nuts with facebook as the primary focus. so for example, i'm just making this up, get a call and the facebook picture of your caller pops up. so tightly integrated with your phone. we'll know more on thursday. back to you. >> sc

"house of cards" is that political thriller that netflix bought. the first time the company has had its own original programming. netflix reports its profits after the closing bell this afternoon, we should be able to have some detail as to how much this series helped. netflix probably won't break down exact numbers but we may be able to figure some of it out. we talk about this company a lot. truth be told it's not a very big company compared to apple or google, it's really interesting and its stock is quite volatile. apple shares on a slide for a week now. investors would like a little goose, something that says, yeah, we're still the innovative company everyone loves so much. apple reports its profits tuesday. they no doubt will report they made suitcases full of cash. a small hint of something ahead. some sort of idea as to what apple might have in the pipeline could help that stock more than anything else. back to you. >> all right, scott. thank you very much. meteorologist krchr

scott mcgrew says this one an incredibly complicated case in front of the justices. >> good morning. a company called myriad has created genetic material in the lab which responds with your genetic material. and the two together become a marker for cancer. but can this be patented, especially if it really does cure cancer? myriad says it spent millions of dollars finding the answer and it argues if it tells everybody about these genes, b rca 1 and 2, it will be giving away secrets of their test. they want to protect the genes by way of patent, kind of the way coke protects is patent for soda. >>> google facing major punishment over the way it delivered search results in europe. google's competitors were practically cackling with glee over the upcoming judgment from the eu. they were expecting huge fines. word this morning google actually proposed a settlement with regulators, and those regulators, we hear, will say okay. that gets google off the hook. kbo google is under fire for giving results that benefited itself. if you look for a restaurant it will push yelp results for its own

scott mcgrew says it's a super app? >> a super app. that's about right. what facebook announced today was an app for the android phone that takes over your lock screen and your home screen. bottom line is it makes your phone facebookier. sort of like flip board with an experience on your main screen, this is how mark zuckerberg sees the phone currently. he's dissatisfied with this idea. he's come up with something better. here he is making the announcement a short time ago. >> so today we're going to talk about this new experience for your phone. it's a family of apps and you can install it and it becomes the home of your phone. we're calling this home. >> so there you go. this idea, home, will be an option for android phones. there's no chance apple would let an outside company take over a phone the way the home app does. home will be available as an app download. again, android only. it will be available a week from friday, april 12th. htc says it will be the first to offer a specific phone with the home app preloaded. they're calling this first phone,

scott mcgrew is here to explain exactly why. >> virginia says cars have to be sold by private car dealers not car companies. california has no problem with that. here is the tesla showroom in santana row. the car company is working on changing texas law as well. but in virginia this morning, the company gets a big fat no. the head of the dmv there says tesla did not prove a private franchisee couldn't do as good a job as a company-owned tesla store. many states have very specific, very old laws that prohibit car companies from selling their own cars. it's designed to protect the dealers. in many ways, it's similar to baseball. you can't just start a team or open a dealership anywhere you want to. you have to have the blessing of other car dealers and have to do so in a territory not already claimed by another dealer selling the car. apple shares gaining overnight after the company said it would up its dividend and increase its stock buy back. apple said on the phone call yesterday it would become one of the biggest dividend companies in the world. now sales, those weren't so hot, jon and

. >> scott mcgrew, that apology coming from the ceo himself. >> this is the second time we have seenook issue a public apology. the first time was well-deserved for apple maps. the new apology directed towards the people and the government of china. apple has been under fire in the press in china for short shifting chinese consumers, accused of offering the chinese substandard warrants on their apple product. that warranty is no less than the warranty you get for your iphone. considering how much of the criticism was coming directly from the chinese government through state-run media, it would appear apple took the safe route and apologized rather than alienate the world's biggest market. they apologized for appearing arrogant. the big apple factory known as foxconn in shenzhen has reported an incident. news.com says it may be another suicide. foxconn has been under fire for a number of sue sides. the factory is enormous, the same population of the city of oakland, yet it has a reported suicide much smaller. the u.s. government started issuing the latest h-1 visas and says it may run

scott mcgrew wondering where is that line between rich and super rich?>> apparently, it is $800,000. if you make $800,000 a year, that's super rich. americans making more than that saw their incomes grow. anyone below 800,000 is pretty much everybody, right? wall street, not much happening with the dow this morning. we are seeing two local companies just getting pummeled. safeway is down 15%. i can't figure out why. it looks decent. zynga, down about 8%. reporting an unexpected profit for the previous quarter. that was due to cost cutting. zynga ceo says the number of people playing these games fell by 13%. the stock did jump yesterday after a fake press release said a chinese company would buy the company. many journalists have worried about news off the internet, twitter is going to have affect our jobs. to be honest, with these fake tweets and fake press releases, if you are getting rational, carefully thought-out news, this is a plug, that keeps our jobs fairly safe. >> it has been interesting, though, the fake ones that have come out with the white
