i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura. this morning the chp is trying to figure out what a person was doing walking on highway 101 when he or she was hit and killed by a car. this happened about 9:00 last night in santa clara. the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. about 20 minutes prior to the accident witnesses called to report someone stumbling in the road on northbound 101 near the great america parkway exit. no information about the victim has been released. >> two of the five suspects arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old boy in a campbell park are expected in court this morning. the arrests stem with a fight with a homeless man last month. that man 24-year-old john that were who you see here, stabbed the victim ivan diaz to death. but authorities say that were acted in self defense because he was being brutally beaten by diaz and five others who have gang ties. the suspects range in age from 17 to 20. the santa clara d.a.'s office is using a california law called the provocative act doct

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live in downtown san jose with the councilman's push to change things on measure b. >> reporter: good morning to you. we spoke with the councilman and he supported measure b in 2010, pension reform. but since then, the fallout is that the city of san jose is having a difficult time retaining and rekrcruiting workers. he is looking at the council to take a second look at the controversial measure that did face legal challenges right away. since the voters approved measure b, san jose had serious challenges in its police recruiting and having officers leave for better packages in other jurisdictions. here's what he's considering. >> there's a number of components i'm suggesting looking at from retirement age, accrual rate, disability retirement issue, on the public safety side. there's a number of other ones that i can go on and on. >> reporter: h

thank you for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. scouring the water off of ocean beach in hopes of finding an 8-year-old boy swept out to sea. christie smith just spoke with police with live details. >> one coast guard cutter is in the water looking for that 14-year-old boy and they've been out here all night and they tell me they're looking between the golden gate bridge and just a little bit south of ocean beach that's because of a drift patterns, the movement of the water overnight. but, also, a 17-year-old teen surfer is being called a hero for helping two others out of the water. at 3:30 yesterday a man and his teen son and teen nephew were walking along ocean beach and a rip current suddenly dragged the two younger people into the water. the adult tried to run in and saved them, but quickly got into trouble, too. that's when 17-year-old surfer tony barbero helped. first, the older teen and then the father and then there was a third teen still out there. >> they were talking about a third person. the boy, i think, was in shock

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. let's take you back out a look at san jose on the left, san francisco on the right. we expect lots of rain today, the possibility of hail and thunder, wind, even low level snow in the forecast. let's take a look at the radar. you can see the showers rolling in through the bay area. cold air coming with it. for more about this and this microclimate weather alert let's check in with our meteorologist. >> we have a little bit of everything happening right now. we're tracking this real time lightning action off the sonoma coast. though it's happening over the ocean you can see that flash as far as santa rosa. you do want to take it easy. then you see these pop-up cells, they are getting more intense throughout the morning. these cells, the red in the middle, those are thunderstorms. we are expecting more of that activity as we progress throughout the morning. our ground is saturated so we expect the storm reports to possibly double up throughout the day. we could see more trees go down as

thank you for joining us this monday morning, i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker. laura garcia-cannon is off this morning. breaking news in the south bay and there is a large police presence around a home in san jose where a man is holed eld u. now, this is in san jose cambreen neighborhood and that is where bob redell has been out all morning. have you seen any activity in the past couple minutes. >> we've seen more members of san jose's merge here on the scene, if you're not familiar, merge is their version of s.w.a.t and pd now confirms with us that merge has taken over this situation. they are now in charge of this standoff. they've surrounded on a home which you're looking down camden. if you were to look to the right of your screen and peer around that corner, that's where del paso's at. a man refuses to come out of that home after apparently firing a gun around 8:00. >> ya >> i was talking to my parents and he fired 20 shots from his high-power rifle at the neighbor that he thinks is doing illegal activities and then retreated back into his house. >> police

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. three americans were killed, all of them doctors. >> it all happened that cure clinic in kabul. peggy bunker joins us with more. >> you know, just a terrible situation there and also seems to be a senseless act at this point, scott and laura. three americans killed in kabul. the cure hospital is a u.s.-run charity hospital that treats children and maternity patients. one of them a respected children's doctor who spent the last seven years at that facility stretreating afghan children. that is located in a secured walled compound right next to the university of afghanistan. he walked in and shot four americans there killing the doctor and two of his guests who were also doctor. now, those guests were a father and a son who were visiting there to observe his work with the afghani children. the fourth american that was shot was the son's wife. now, she was wounded and has undergone surgery. she has survived, according to reports. the shooter then shot himself, but after the attack also s

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. developing story developing right now. a cutter swept out to sea and there you see the lights of the cutter. the teen was pulled by a powerful wave yesterday afternoon while playing in the water along san francisco beach. christie smith is by the command center where crews are being brought in to help search. >> good morning, scott. because of the drift patterns overnight, they're basically searching between the golden gate bridge to just south of san francisco, desperately searching for this 14-year-old boy. also, san francisco firefighters are standing by. they have their mobile command unit and they say they're doing that just in case they get an emergency call that the coast guard does need help that they found something out there. the signs are posted at ocean beach that talk about how dangerous these rip currents are out here and that's what happened here at ocean beach yesterday late afternoon. two teen cousins were walking in the water near the shore when they were pulled out to sea by one of these rip currents. on

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. developing news for you out of san francisco. a driver pulled over by police under arrest this morning after officers found a stick of dynamite inside his pickup truck. suspect pulled over last night on mason street. "today in the bay" chase cain joins us live in san francisco. investigators also taking a close look at the suspect's home, as well. >> they sure are, scott. they wrapped up that search at their home within the last two hours or so. came into this house in vallejo in the russian hill neighborhood. they came to this house at 2:30. u.s. park police made what at first they thought was a routine traffic stop on a red pickup truck. they began talking to the driver and they suspected that there may have been marijuana inside the vehicle and then the driver told them that he had fireworks and handed what we have now learned a stick of dynamite. the driver handed that stick of dynamite to park police. they call ed in the san franciso bomb squad and they detonated that explosive there on the scene. no one was hurt. but, a few

i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker. laura is off this morning. update on breaking news. the biggest ever disaster on mt. everest. an avalanche at the highest peak in the world, 13 people were killed when snow and ice came tumbling down the mountain. right now rescuers are still looking for climbers who may have been buried. bob redell joining us in the studio with the latest. it is not unknown that this is probably one of the most dangerous places on earth. >> it is. no other event on everest has killed this many people. 11 of those 13 people killed, two still missing and four more were hurt, two critically. the voice of america reporting that as many as 100 climbers could be trapped above the avalanche on the world's tallest mountain. now, this happened a little bit after sunrise friday morning nepal time. the 13 who died were sherpas, local guides who help hikers up the mountain. they were resupplying camps one and two. those are stops on the way up the summit when the avalanche struck a wall of snow and ice struck, burying the sherpas and a cameraman tell "today" show
