. >> i'm scott mcgrew. laura and marcus have the day off. let's begin with the smoke in the bay area. you can see it, an air quality advisory. we can turn to meteorologist kari hall. it's still going to be pretty tough out there. >> yeah. for parts of the bay area. we are going to see some of that smoke drifting in, a bit of a hazy sky. as we go through the week does look like we'll see the return of the smoke as temperatures warm up. we're watching that as well as our fire danger as our temperatures heat up in the valleys. as far as where the most unhealthy smoke will be, parts of the north bay and the coast and east bay. but it will actually be pretty good for the south bay in santa clara valley so we're seeing some good air quality in some areas. the smoke drifting in for areas farther to the north a little bit closer to those fires. as far as temperatures, we have a nice ocean breeze picking up today that's going to keep the natural air conditioning in place and we're talking about highs in the low 70s for hayward, san jose reaching 75 d

. >> and i'm scott mcgrew in for marcus washington. >> look at the haze that is blanketing the skies over the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking these really serious and dangerous -- conditions. >> the air quality is getting worse and will continue into the afternoon. really starting to see those sensors show moderate to the east bay. even here we are tomorrow afternoon, it's still going to be smokey, although we may see some minor improvements right along the immediate coast line. but we have all of these very large fires putting large billows of smoke into the air, and now with the northerly wind it's pushing that right into the bay area. so with the high wind gusts we also have the high fire concerns, especially for our elevations above 1,000 feet. and as we go into the rest of today, the winds will gradually calm down as we've seen more of a northerly wind that will turn westerly heading into tomorrow. but it does still look like that smoke will linger. we'll talk about that as well as that fire danger coming up in a few minutes. >>> just in, fi

. >> scott mcgrew, the u.s. military moving americans and afghans out at a breathtaking pace. >> reporter: there's no question what we saw last week was a mess, that the white house was ill prepared for. but the turnaround has been significant. 21,000 americans and afghans airlifted from the airport in kabul in just the last 24 hours. nearly 64,000 have been evacuated in the past week. now, the big question, if american allies are moving the rate out at 21,000 a day, is that enough? for perspective, about 30,000 passengers leave san jose's airport every day. 35,000 out of sfo. nobody seems to know what the total should be, whether that's afghans or americans, how many americans have escaped, how many haven't? the pentagon is vague. >> i would just tell you that several thousand, we know several thousand americans have been safely evacuated from afghanistan. i understand that's not the degree of specificity that you want. but that is as far as i'm going to be able to go today, several thousand. >> reporter: presi

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. we begin with a live look around the bay area. sun is coming up and things look pretty hazy. smoke from wildfires burning elsewhere expected to continue to drift into the bay area. >> that's right. a lot of concerns with all these fires that are burning and we're seeing that smoke come in today. >> it's going to be pretty unhealthy to be outside for long periods of time. you have to be mindful of that if you're sensitive to the smoke and much of the east bay into the south bay, we're starting out pretty good but in the north bay, the air quality is already unhealthy. this will continue as the smoke spreads in later today. so we are going to be monitoring our air quality that will continue to be unhealthy throughout the day tomorrow. these fires burning across the state burning out of control at this point and may be shifting direction due to the change in wind and the increase in wind speed so that's what we're watching for today. we also have a high fire danger for some of our bay area hills until about 3:00 this afternoon when t
