." >>> let's continue our coverage now with scott mcgrew. when items are hard to find the prices go up. supply and demand. >>> it is just that easy, isn't it? inflation is actually one of the easiest economic phenomenon to explain supply and demand is 90% of it and then monetary policy is about another 10% of it. we'll get some key inflation data here very shortly, in about 15 minutes, showing how much prices rose last month from a year previous. so these will be december prices. i can't show them to you yet because i don't have them yet but i can show you the previous month's information. these are november's numbers showing us 6.8% rise in prices year over year. these are really high numbers but they're also logical. in the middle of the pandemic prices fell, right, in what we thought was the end of the pandemic, prices went back up and then some as supply constricted because of those supply chain issues that sharon was talking about. so we're going to get the new numbers in just a short period of time. keep in mind these are not additive.

scott mcgrew to do that, democrats have to change the rules and dump the filibuster. >> yeah, at leastcific case. democrats can win any vote in the senate if everybody in their party is onboard, and democrats can pass new voter rights bills. what they can't do is get the votes to the floor. you need 60 yes votes to get a bill to the floor. that's the filibuster. chuck schumer has said give us the 60 yes votes so we can vote on a bill. if you don't we will change the rules and take the bill to the floor anyway. he doesn't use the word filibuster specifically, but everybody gets the hint. he writes, the senate phugs must adapt. freedom to vote would expand vote by mail, early voting and john lewis would put back many of the voting rights act rules that dropped out of effect. president biden met with ranchers and farmers to talk about the high cost of food, particularly meat. just a few companies control a great deal of the meat packing business. >> these companies can use their position as middlemen to over charge grocery stores, and i was telling the -- my colleagues earlier in my offic

. >> scott mcgrew has been monitoring that meeting. scott, the meat discussion is the meat of the discussion. >> they'd help them ramp up with a billion dollars in aid. as for the conference with farmers, it's notable that not only the secretary of agriculture will be there, as the conference is late in starting. you see the president's empty desk. the attorney general is going to be there, too. the administration had been talking about whether or not big meat packers are stifling competition. now we don't know that that is true. keep in mind monopolies also can bring prices down. the government tends to step in with antitrust, not necessarily because there's a monopoly but because that monopoly hurts the consumer. even if they don't, breaking up companies like big meat-packing companies that got too big would take years upon years. i want to show you this. this could be part of the delay. indeed. you think your commute to work was tough. this is air force one at joint base andrews. the president leaves washington nearly every weekend.

i'm scott mcgrew. today's airing of this show marks its 400th episode. that is more than ten years of shows. now, do the math in your head and you might think that's 520 shows, but with the various preemptions for sports, it works out to 400. i don't love being preempted for sports, but i get it. 9:00 a.m. here is noon in new york and various sports are very well underway by noon. i thought with it being the holidays and all and 400 being such a nice round number, we would look back at some of the episodes over the years. the biggest change to this show, of course, is the fact that i do most of my episodes from my house, interviewing other people at their homes. for most of the show's life, we sat together at a desk in this studio. myself and two very talented guest reporters from places like fortune and cnbc and "the new york times" and "the wall street journal" interviewing various ceos and entrepreneurs. so many of the clips i'm going to show you won't look very socially distant, because when they were shot, we didn't know what socially distant meant.

scott mcgrew continues our coverage. >>> on january 7th, 2021, anti-democratic forces tried to stop the congress from certifying the report. they shouted heave ho as they crushed a police officer in a door and called for the vice president to be hanged to stop the results of the election. donald trump very plain spoken about his opposition to make it easier for qualified americans to vote. >> they had things, levels of voting that if you ever agreed to it, you'd never have a republican elected in this country again. >> to that end, red states like texas have moved to restrict voting. for those who oppose those new restrictions on legal voting, there's a very narrow window. democrats may have less than a year before they quite possibly lose the midterm elections and the senate. and the opportunity to pass two bills, the freedom to vote act and the john lewis act. the freedom to vote academy would expand vote by mail and early voting. the john lewis act would reauthorize the 1965 voting rights act, frustrating states like texas from restricting legal voting. to do that, democrats need 60

scott mcgrew is trying to find a way to lower some of the food prices that have been hurting familiest think i would have guessed, kris, that food prices and the price of meat in particular would be one of the crisis the white house faced, but it's an important consideration for american households. a chicken in every pot is a very old phrase, indeed. the white house said it would grant $1 billion to small independent meat packers and processors, and the white house launched an investigation into big meat packers, too. there are only a few of them and that means a monopoly and the meat at the store could present higher prices. monopolies could also bring lower prices, and even if they don't breaking up companies before they get too big takes years upon years upon years. and then zielinski is an interesting fellow, former tv comedian turned politician, he won 70% of the vote. while we are on that subject, the house select committee investigating the january 6th capitol attack, that led to the second impeachment is involving big names. it's not the committee's job specifically, it's the

scott mcgrew monitoring those talks and scott, they started with an informal dinner but can it be informaluch serious stakes. the russians went out of their way, kris, to say that the talks were not very productive. now, our secretary of state, antony blinken, will lead those talks today. at issue for the u.s., the russian military build-up on the border of ukraine. for the russians, it's the expansion of nato. they're worried too many countries are close to its border that are choosing to ally with the west instead of russia. now, this is very different, of course, than the days of the iron curtain when russia surrounded itself with buffer states like poland and czechoslovakia, countries that now consider the u.s. to be their allies or simply don't exist as countries at all. looking at congress this morning, republican senator ron johnson of wisconsin says he will run for a third term, despite promises to his constituents he would not. and then you have congresswoman ocasio-cortez over the weekend, the democratic new york congresswoman, her office said she contracted coronavirus. she took
