sean fain, uaw head, is embarking on what has been a reasonably unconventional strategy. it has been a reasonably effective strategy. remember, recently, he got joe biden to become the very first president to join a picket line. joining in the state of michigan. you are seeing a little more action here. the story you referenced, the uaw seeking at least a 30% wage pump out of these talks with u.s. automakers, it's an interesting play. it's a climb-down from their public positioning around 40 had been. this is a number the uaw believes would not just make their numbers happy -- their m embers happy, but also get the uaw enough juice to go out and organize some other places it hasn't been able to get in. the big white whale of that of course being tesla. it's a signal of where you can go from here. at the same point, fain as in this adopted strategy, as i said unconventional. they are not all striking at once. he has the ability to escalate and has threatened another escalation if there is not real progress made by friday u.s. time. you are seeing an avenue to get out. a wa

it's something that sean fain has been opposed to, and the folks that elected.e'll see how that goes. i want to ask you this question. on that context. we have seen all of this union activity, at starbucks, at amazon, the teamsters, and u. p. s., this. workers and workers are waking up. these strikes me that part of the issue is, you've got a tight labor market. employees have more choice now than they did during that long period of the great recession, a lot of slack in the labor market. six, seven, 8% unemployment. people were worried. they were replaceable. this, it seems to me, this environment has given workers more say and more power in their negotiations with ownership. >> i think there is truth to that, chris. i think it really goes deeper. i think covid, the pandemic, was a real emotional wake up for the american people. the rich people, the ceos, could stay at home and work in their fancy offices, or their homes behind their computers. working people, people at the uaw, bus drivers, people working in warehouses, nurses, doctors. they had to go to work.

host: what should we know about sean fain? how long has he been uaw president? guest: he was only elected as president earlier this year. he is trying to make his mark. he understands that workers have been looking for progress on compensation benefits for years and the uaw has gone through a very difficult period. they have struggled with corruption, federal charges. the last couple of uaw presidents are in prison because of accusations against the union. he is trying to regain the moral authority that the union lost over the last couple of years and show his numbers he is fighting for them. that is the context. what he is doing is putting the focus on the automakers and saying they have had progress over the last several years and they can afford to deliver some of that back to workers. host: give us an idea of the potential economic impact of a strike, if indeed it is expanded and more plants are added the three currently on strike. guest: right now it is somewhat limited because it is just the three. it will affect the ford bronco and the jeep by the acre --

if you look at what's been happening, you have sean fain, the president of the uaw basically praisingr the progress that has been made, and castigating the other two, general motors for not doing more. in some ways that follows the traditional negotiation tactics we've seen from the auto workers union, with a strike a deal first circuit closer to a deal with one company and match the deal. at the moment you have comments from both companies. basically saying similar things, which is they question whether the union is negotiating in good faith. that being said, they also say we look forward to the uaw leadership's productive engagement and they said they continue to bargain in good faith. what this means in terms of getting the parties at the negotiating table, we will have to wait and see. >> what are the particular sticking points that we know of between the sides at this point? >> we know they have been asking for higher pay. that has been one of the issues. beyond that there are others related to worker benefits. is something where more senior workers are entitled to substantially
