if you look really close it says, search. somebody wrote that there because maybe they thought somebody was inside, they went inside. we use a different method now. it's in your book if you did your homework. otherwise i'll show you later in the lecture. paint lines are another indicator of how damaged buildings are. if you want to look at the paint lines on this building, it's kind of hard to tell until you get up close. remember, this building is kind of a grayish tannish color, i guess. when you get a little bit closer, this side of the building should be the same color as this side of the building. what happened was this building moved away from the building next door and that's how far it moved. separation between buildings. you want to look at the separation to see if it's even, is it the same distance at the bottom as at the top, but that's another indicator of how damaged buildings are. this one looks fairly even, but when you get closer you can tell with the racking on the bottom that this building was pulled away. l

when we talk about search and rescue, i really want to make a distinction between searching and rescuing. searching is really basically looking for people; right? once we find a person we switch modes and go into this rescue mode. when we talk about search and rescue, try not to get it too mixed up because you think dfrpbtly based on what you are doing. if you are searching, you think about certain things and if you are rescuing somebody, you think about other things. the first rule, of course, would be do not become a victim yourself. whenever you do a search, you have to preplan. you have to understand who is doing what. we suggest that you work in two teams of at least two people, so that's at least four people doing a search at the very, very, very least. you want a team on the outside and a team on the inside. proper safety equipment, we talked about equipment. we're only going to give you helmets. we're going to give you vests too. are the vests going to protect you from anything? no. any other equipment you have to get your own. gloves, if we have any extra we'll give you gloves.

hour in the sierra after an overnight helicopter search failed to find her.uthorities say 25-year-old willis last seen tuesday afternoon near the boundary lines at the top of the alpine meadows ski resort. our reporter joining us by phone with the very latest. good morning, bryan. >> reporter: good morning, kraig. the weather today far cry from yesterday. yesterday blizzard all day long. never got the break they were hoping for, today it is clear but that brings a new problem, the temperature here at alpine meadows this morning 5 degrees at the base of the mountain. extremely cold here making it all more important to get out and find this 45-year-old snow boarder who has spent two nights in miserable conditions here in the sierra. last night later in the evening they did get a break in the weather. that allowed them to launch a army black hawk helicopter with infrared technology and in a snowy cold environment like this anything that's generating heat will just light up that screen. they actually were able to see some of the searchers but never found the snow

this has been a two-day long search for ms. bin and her vehicle.aturday nilght, she was with friends and following friends in jenner down to highway 116 about two miles away, and her friends got to the intersection, they noticed she was not there behind them, so they doubled back. she was not found that night. the sheriffs department launched a search in the area yesterday. the water was very, very murky, and the current is very strong. in fact, visibility down there is about 15, 20 feet of water, possibly more was like 0 i was told. so today, they brought in search teams, divers, as well as a special camera from napa county, marin county, plus state investigators, searchers. and just about a quarter to 5:00, they made contact with the vehicle, and they brought this big truck, flatbed truck with cables, and it's taking quite a while for the divers to connect the cables to the vehicle. they are working against strong currents. they are going to drag this up. the coroner, the county coroner has been here for some hours. he's not going to release any
