that's the road that runs between sedona, arizona and flagstaff, arizona. firefighters are really focusing on holding that line, the road, holding the line that they have already been able to create in some way on the north end using kind of a back burn operation as well as throwing down fire retardant. they do have a lot of resources as you mentioned here today. that's been a big improvement over what they had here yesterday. at least 800 fire personnel. 15 hotshot crews. we're expecting to see five more hotshot crews arrive here in the next few hours. we also know they had five helicopters up working, three air tankers. they're throwing everything they have at this right now, brianna, in the hopes of keeping this fire under control. we're sitting at just under 5,000 acres. that number has not gone up in the last 24 hours or so. but, again, it's still an unpredictable situation. we're going to keep watching it for you. >> and do we have any sense of how this started, ana? >> we don't know specifically. fire officials say they're still investigating. but th

that is the situation this morning near sedona in arizona. over 7,000 acres have already burned and hundreds of homes and businesses are in harm's way. let's get the latest from ana cabre cabrera. >> reporter: john and christine, it's the extremely dry conditions that have firefighters really concerned. it's these pine needles, these dry pine needles that are blanketing the forest floor, providing a kindling of sorts for this fire that's now burning thousands of acres. you can see that huge plume of smoke that's been blowing to the north. the winds have been a huge x-factor for firefighters as they work to try to contain this fire that's burning in very steep, rugged and treacherous terrain. so, firefighters have been relying a lot on the air support in some of those areas, dropping fire retardant to protect the homes that are on the northeast flank. still, 300 homes that are threatened right now. there are hundreds of fire crews that have arrived from six different states to help in this fire battle. at least 20 hot shot crews that are also

in rugged terrain but as it grows, it continues to threaten hundreds of homes and businesses near sedona our report tonight from nbc's miguel almaguer. >> reporter: for five days, arizona's slide fire has swept across mountain ranges. flames racing up canyon walls. with 300 homes and structures threatened, the blaze is multiplying in size, now well over 10,000 acres. even with 1,000 firefighters on the ground, the inferno is difficult to reach. >> there's some very steep, rugged terrain in the middle, in the center of the fire, and we're having a hard time getting firefighters in there. >> reporter: with containment at just 5%, in certain areas crews are letting this fire go. the blaze has everything it needs. oxygen and dry brush. with so much fuel in its path, this fire will likely burn for weeks, if not months. firefighters even loaded these ping pong balls full of napalm to be shot onto hillsides with crews can ignite a slow and controlled burn. helicopters navigate smoky skies making drops on hot spots. >> it's really crucial especially in steep, rugged terrain like we're facing her
