allie rasmus just spoke to sfo officials and she joins us live from sfo with some new information about flight delays. good morning, alley. >> reporter: good morning. you can see it's not raining right now. the weather is having an effect on travel here at san francisco international airport. if you look behind us, you can see a number of people unloading. this is supposed to be the busiest travel day of the year with over 100,000 people through sfo. but because of the low ceiling and visibility, the traffic management program is in effect from sfo. this is inside the terminal. there are a lot of people here. the security line was packed. it could get more problematic and hectic today. starting at 7:00, this airport won't be able to use all of the runways because of that traffic management program put into effect by the faa. that could mean delays up to four hours for flights to arrive here and also delays from 30 to 60 minutes for flights departing from sfo. the spokesperson talked to us about the weather conditions. >> this is one of these winter storms that usually comes out of the s

delays at sfo on arriving flights of 4 hours. of course, a lot of, trying to get around the country it's going to be tough for folks around the country. delays at laguardia, 58 degrees expected in new york this afternoon. chilly 31 in chicago. 54 in denver and 57 degrees in houston. if you plan to travel to the high country today, be very careful. winter storm warnings run. we could see upwards of 5 feet of snow across the higher between now and monday morning. so no messing around. this is a serious storm system. computer models picking up on the storm sagging south throughout the morning, this afternoon more showery. but toward tomorrow another impulse moves in and you're looking at possibility of some embedded thunderstorms some heavy rainfall into tomorrow morning could be a wild morning around the bay area tomorrow morning, as well. temperatures today expected only to be in the 50s outside and the next couple of days wet on and off throughout the weekend very stormy. maybe a break on monday into the first part of tuesday, ch

nick smith is live at sfo. earlier this morning the delays were about an hour and a half for arriving flights. anything changed. >> reporter: that has not changed. you are is spot on and the problem is the wind. we have felt the wind gusts as we he drove down 101 headed here to sfo and this is a wind advisory in effect. people are slowly arriving to sfo and they can expect flight delays. an air traffic management program in effect for flights arriving to sfo and this is causing some of the arriving flights to be deplayed an average of one hour and 37 minutes. there will be delays throughout the day until at least 6:00 p.m. it will mostly affect commuter flights and traffic along the west coast. the wind advisory currently in effect plays a large role in the reduced visibility and different landing patterns. flights now approaching from the northeast over oakland airport instead of from the southeast over the san mateo bridge. back here live, if you are dropping people off or pecking people up you need to do tha

no word yet if it has any effect on sfo flights. if you are heading home for the holidays from the bay area and other parts of country you might want to be prepared to wait because in addition to traveling during the busy season it looks like you're traveling against mother nature and thanks to that winter storm in chicago, aviation officials say more than 350 flights out of o'hare and 450 out of midway were canceled. we are seeing the effects here at home. sfo reps say it's delayed a few flights in the bay area. that's not the only thing that will set back travelers today here. rain is moving into our region so unfortunately, the national weather service says this could make things messy for travelers. but the early bird flyers we spoke to say they are prepared. >> when i go to check in i'm two hours ahead with tickets ready. so if they tell me there's a delay i'll be able to catch another airport. i have three stops on the way home. so i'll hope time in between will make up for that. >> reporter: delays could impact connect flight

sfo reps say it's delayed a few flights in the bay area. that's not the only thing that will set travelers back. rain is moving into our region so unfortunately, the national weather service says this could complicate things for travelers. we're expecting weather delays which could impact those connecting flights so in addition to that, sfo is expected to see an estimated 130,000 passengers to pass through this airport. so travelers today of all days it's a good thing to do to check your flights before you get to the airport. in addition to that, you might want to pack a little extra patience today, as well. reporting live at sfo, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> good advice, cate, thanks. >>> air travelers in southern california are feeling the impact from the midwest storm. multiple flights between los angeles and midwestern cities have been canceled. officials at l.a.x. expect more cancellations later today. passengers who made it home from chicago told of cancellations being announced even as they board their flights out of the storm zone. >>>

at sfo, philippe djegal, kron four news. the national weather service has also issued a flood warning for pescadero creek in san mateo county this afternoon and flash flood warnings have been issued sfor san mateo and santa cruz counties. authorities say the pescadero creek has been rising for several hours and the warning has been extended to 8:30 tonight. residents and others in the area should move to higher ground. we'll keep a close eye on those advisories and keep you updated. more than 6,000 bay area residents without power; most outages in north bay counties thousands of bay area residents were without power today as rain and wind pounded the region, a utility spokeswoman said. the majority of outages were reported in the north bay, where 5,300 customers were without power in marin, sonoma and napa counties as of 1:30 p.m., pg&e spokeswoman jana morris said. in the east bay, around 1,375 customers were experiencing outages, morris said. in san francisco, 88 customers were in the dark, and just 28 peninsula customers

ktvu channel 2 reporter, ail little rasmus is live at sfo where we're -- allie rasmus is live at sfore we're already seeing big lines there. >> reporter: that's right. the good news first. if you are traveling out of sfo, oakland or san jose, we checked with all three, there are no delays you have to worry about and no cancellations. that's the good news. what may give you a headache today, are the lines. it's very busy here at terminal 2 at san francisco international airport. you can see all of the cars pulling up. we've seen a steady stream of passengers unloading checking into the terminal. it's especially inside the terminal. this is video of the security line in terminal 2 from about 45 minutes ago. there were hundreds of people waiting to pass through and the line snaked all the way out into the middle of the terminal. today is one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season for this airport with 120,000 people expected to pass through sfo today alone and some people we talked to were surprised to see it so crowded here on christmas eve. others said it made more sense for

sfo reporting 30 miles an hour this morning. yesterday sfo reached about 43 with the gusts. giving you a look over oakland. we have overcast sykes, gray conditions and the rain continues to fall. there will be a break-in time for your holiday shopping this afternoon. take a look at storm tracker 2. this is about two hours. two hours ago to now you can see some of that heavier rain that came through the area now starting to push off to the south and east. isolated thunderstorms have been reported at times including areas in san jose just in the last half hour or so. you can see we have good rainfalling over parts of the peninsula, half moon bay, moving in to areas around san mateo. you will see this move across the bay. light rain over san jose. we have pretty good rainfalling over areas along the east bay. you can see over the hills into san ramone, 580 and 680 you can see the stretch, making the round to danville and dublin as well as san ramone. light rain, we have light to moderate in richmond, along i- 80. it's a dangerous ride up the hill. it'll be a dangerous ride, you

and they are ready to go. >>> we are seeing some delays already at sfo because of winds! 23-minute delays because winds are picking up ahead of this storm. wind advisory effects for the north bay coastline, san mateo coastline, and san francisco until tomorrow morning. a series of systems over the next few days. tonight we're already seeing rain rolling into the north bay. it's going to continue through much of tomorrow. another round of rain for much of the day saturday, and then rain from sunday afternoon pretty much into monday morning. let's take a look. satellite and radar, the rain continues to edge into the north bay. the tailend of the system is well offshore. moving very, very slowly. the combination of those two things could lead to some heavy rainfall totals. the computer model initialized really, really well. 6:00 it was showing rain up to the north, but right now, we're not even seeing rain through the north bay. by 3:00 tomorrow morning, we probably won't seeing anything south of the golden gate, just through the north bay. and through 7:00 tomorrow morning,
