justin finch in shamong with an update on the fire. good morning. >> reporter: erika ukee, good morning. the weather and wind could really help or hinder effort this morning. we are told right now, it is leaning toward the helping side. this area right now under a dense fog advisory, but already we have seen new jersey forest fire service head into wharton state park or rather forest, to continue to fight back these flames. let's take you now to video what we saw here last night. more than 700 acres burning out here, then late yesterday came word that the fire happened mostly contained this all day effort waged to help crews gain the upper hand. we also saw 75 firefighters on the gown setting backfires, to knock down the stronger flames here. additional volunteer firefighters also called in to guard an old church here in the area where this fire was burning. now, reinforcements, also came down from above. helicopters, and planes, dropping water take a listen. >> we could get real controls, go to tree top level if we had, to we could pu

"eyewitness news" reporter justin finch joins us now in shamong to bring us to up date. good morning. >> reporter: erika, good morning, that's right, they work well into the night to bring those flames under control. you can see the firetrucks returned here this morning they will return to the scene of the fire to con continue to knock down the flames. let's get you now to video from just yesterday. the new jersey forest fire service worked well into the night to make sure that this fire threat did not grow. they had to go out there search for hot spots as well as flare-ups. this fire was first seen just after 1:00 yesterday, from the atton rage err station. yesterday word the word came down the fire was mostly contained, just about 50% or so. and that was due in large part to the effort here on the ground by firefighters, some 75 of them going out there to setback-fires to weaken the stronger flames, planes, helicopters, also in the air dousing water from on high. now, the forest fire service is looking into

this fire started behind the rangers station on 206 near quakerbridge road in shamong. area is now closed. "nbc 10's" katy zachry is live on the scene in shamong township. katy, bring us up to speed. >> reporter: the fire is burning 1/4 mile from where we're standing at this rangers station just beyond this tree line, which is hard for you to see because of how dense the smoke and fog is together. firefighters say the moisture from this morning's fog is actually helping to fight the flames. here's a look at the area that's burning. it has grown to over 700 acres, which is about 1 square mile. crews say they are making head way though. they have half of the fire contained and they feel it will all be contained by later this morning. this is largely due to the fact that they have had a fire line in the works, small fires which are intentionally set by the forest service to destroy brush and trees so that there's no fuel to aid the growing fire. firefighters tell us they believe someone set this fire but they don't know if it was intentional or accidental. we are also hearing from some people who live in the area that they were worried about going to bed l
