you've had more time since you got out before your -- josh and shane. know why you were made examples by the iranians. >> we were very much in the wrong place at the wrong time. particularly in the wrong time. the streets of tehran and other capitals, big cities in iran just exploded with millions of protesters and the government felt threatened. and we were held because we were valuable to the iranian government. they want to look strong and defiant to the u.s. government but they also -- we knew eventually they would cash us in, sort of like compassion points. and that was the sliver of light for us. the reason we wrote the book and what the book was about, is about freedom, about the horror of losing it and the miracle of getting it back. it's also about all of the people that we had to leave behind, all of the people in iran that didn't make it out like my friend za rar and all of the people in u.s. in solitary confinement for petty offenses. they are being psych logally tortured. there are violent people we put in solitary, but there are better way

joining me now, shane, josh, and sarah. i welcome all three of you. i'll begin with you, shane.onditions inside that prison. what was that like? do you think you might have been treated differently because you were american? >> thanks for having us. the prison we were in, we were in iran's central prison and we were held in a political ward where there were pro-democracy activists and other political prisoners held in isolation, many of them in solitary confinement. we sometimes heard people being beaten. people told us they were electrocuted or beaten on the bottom of their feet. but we quickly realized that we -- our interrogators told us that they knew we weren't spies after two months of interrogation and that we were, you know, stuck in the middle of negotiations between the two countries and that the situation had become political. so we knew that we were valuable to the iranians as hostages, and for that reason, we weren't physically abused in the same way. >> i know here in this country, there are new efforts, especially in california and new york to try to curb the use

there's a there's a shift going on josh shane how. how is that we have become a country where solitary confinement is so incredibly calm and i you know i get it that we have the this this horrible perverse incentive where private prison companies make more profit if they can figure out ways to make their prisoners more expensive and if they can have more prisoners and so we have private private prison companies that have a very significant lobbying presence here in washington d.c. you know and in every state house across the country arguing for longer sentences more direct kone and sentences tougher sentencing laws minimum mandatory less judicial discretion things like that has has that been part of it because it's much more expensive to house one person in one cell than it is to her it was five people in one cell has that been part of it or has it been you know an ak zero for the whole nixon reagan get tough on crime start beating people upside the head damage if they're not going to behave i mean what is driving this how did we get

shane, your previous pieces looked at solitary confinement in america.ing at the republicans changing their position. why? >> well, i think it's interesting that right now, you know, after three decades of kind of a massive rise in our prison population, that we're seeing it shift. in 2009, our prison population started falling. and, you know, a lot of this is actually coming from conservative policies. texas's prison population has fallen 20% since 2007. you're seeing, you know, people like newt gingrich, rand paul, call for a repeal of mandatory minimums. and you know, they're kind of shifting a lot of conservative states right now. there's a group called right on crime that's really kind of leading the way in this. >> and you mentioned rand paul. he spoke about judge lewis, who's here at the table. let's take a listen to that and get your response. >> federal judge timothy lewis recalls a case where he had to send a 19-year-old to prison for conspiracy. what was the conspiracy? the young man was in a car where drugs were found. i don't know about you,
