nbc's shaquille brewster is in kenosha with the latest. we saw you at the rally and protest yesterday. what's the latest on the investigation now, and how is jacob blake doing? >> well, not much more, lindsey, on the investigation. we know it is in the hands of the state officials, the state department of justice. so we know the officers are on administrative leave and we know there's aubt 30-day timeline for when state investigators will continue their investigation and then hand over a report to prosecutors to make a possible charging decision. but the latest on mr. blake's condition as we know it from the family is that he is awake. he is alert in the hospital, he has been communicating with his family. his mother went to visit him yesterday, and we expect his father to do so today. his family is still asking for the prayers of people around the city and people all across the country. that's the latest on the investigation. we continue to wait to hear if we will hear any more details about exactly what happened and what led to the shoot

joining me now from kenosha is nbc news political reporter shaquille brewster. shaquille, wisconsin is a battleground state. the president obviously wants to go there because he wants to win wisconsin. joe biden apparently is going to be going there very soon, according to symone sanders. what is it like there right now as people consider whether the president should go or whether joe biden should go? >> well, katy, there's a press conference ongoing right now with local officials here in kenosha. one thing they said, they think the community for the past few days of peaceful protests which is something i have witnessed myself. this weekend, we saw large protests led by the jacob blake family, but they remained peaceful. you had well over 1,000 people here marching through the streets, talking about a message of unity, talking about that message of peace. the concern that you hear from local officials, and this hasn't come up in the press conference happening now just yet, but the concern from members of the community is that that peace will get shaken by a visit

joining me from kenosha is nbc news reporter shaquille brewster., where are we today, both in mr. blake's health and in the investigation? >> let's start with his health. we learned from the family attorney this morning that his family got to see mr. blake in the hospital yesterday. and his father confirmed to nbc news this morning that he is paralyzed from the waist down, although it's important to note his father doesn't know if that's a temporary condition or permanent situation. in terms of the investigation, it is in the hands of the division of criminal investigation. it's a state agency, part of the state's department of justice. they are going through and we know within 30 days they need to turn over that investigation, a report of that investigation to the district attorney and the prosecutors. the prosecutors would make any determination on charges, if they are -- if the prosecutor determines there are to be charges. we won't know a lot until that report comes out. if there are no charges, that report then becomes public. meanwhile, prote

nbc's shaquille brewster is in wisconsin following the latest developments in the case.et to the protests in a moment. first, what do we know about the investigations surrounding the shooting itself? >> reporter: right now the case is in the hand of the state's department or division of criminal investigation. that's in the state's department of justice. what that means, it's in the hands of the state. the state is leading the investigation with the assistance of local law enforcement. what that means from a timeline perspective is that, once the state goes through its investigation, there's about a 30-daytime line. within 30 days of the actual shooting, the state will hand over a report to the district attorney and the prosecutors, and the prosecutor will make a decision on possible charges. if they decide not to charge, that report then becomes public. that's where things stand right now. i should add, there are many things we just don't know about the original shooting beyond that original statement and beyond the video we see. we know the body camera -- police office

i want to bring in shaquille brewster in kenosha, wisconsin, peter alexander at the white house, erin mclaughlin in portland, oregon and mike memoli in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. shaq, how are folks you're talking to feeling about the president's visit tomorrow? >> well, geoff, as with everything, the reaction is mixed. you have the leading democrats in the staircte, the mayor of kenosha to the governor of wisconsin, even the attorney general who is leading the investigation into the jacob blake shooting. they are in opposition to the president's trip saying -- and expressing concern that his trip could bring an end to the relative peace you saw at least through the weekend here in kenosha. then you have republican leaders in the state, including a letter from the county board of supervisors and republicans on that board saying that they want the president to continue his trip and they want the president to come out here and survey the damage as he is planning to do. i also spoke to regular people because the division there among regular people here in kenosha are just as strong. liste

nbc's shaquille brewster is in kenosha. you have been all over this story from the start. with the update from the wisconsin a.g. what are we learning about the moments leading up to the shooting? what can you tell us? >> reporter: we knew this was a state investigation, so that's why we haven't heard much about the shooting since the sunday night statement that was put up. now wisconsin's attorney general is giving us for the first time the timeline of exactly what we know and some of the basic facts in this case. we know the name of the officer, mr. rustin chesky, on the force for seven years. officers say when they arrived they tried to arrest mr. blake and they tased him. at some point he acknowledged he had a knife in his possession. they don't make clear if they saw the knife. after the shooting they recovered the knife from the floorboard of the driver's side of his vehicle. we also know the state is also asking the federal government to investigate this situation. now that federal civil rights investigation going on. the state saying they're doing that so two indep

nbc's shaquille brewster is in kenosha. what is the scene like at the rally? >> reporter: this rally is set to kick off. it is going to start with a march and then a rally down by the courthouse. we're told it is going to step off any moment now. as we're looking at the pictures of the crowds of people here, i'll tell you i just got to talk with jacob blake's uncle. his uncle tells us that he is alert in the hospital. he's talking. his mother is currently visiting him and she also confirms the shackles we kept talking about around his ankle, the handcuff around his left wrist according to his lawyer, those have been removed. you see the people here getting ready to step off. that is the latest we've heard. the other thing we heard is this information that, the talk about these warrants that were out. the reason why he was shackled you heard from the police chief here. they said that was standard procedure. that was the result of some outstanding warrants related to a third-degree sexual assault charge. well, the family is disputing that. the family is saying t

. >> nbc's shaquille brewster is in kenosha. it absolutely makes no sense.an is paralyzed, he's facing surgery, repeated surgeries. no one can explain why he would be shackled. >> reporter: yes, andrea, and it's definitely a question that we have been asking. i'll tell you that in just the past couple of minutes, mr. blake's father repeated that in an emotional interview as he was in washington, d.c. he's speaking at the march on washington. and he repeated that feeling that he had, the distress he faced when he saw his son still shackled. we reached out to the family attorney, benjamin crump, to see if he had any more information to provide about why that might be and why that is the case. he hasn't responded to us. but in that interview where you heard mr. blake's father explain that sight, mr. crump was asked about that a little bit later and he said it was an outrage. he went on to say that it follows a pattern of deliberate indifference and excessive force. we also have been in contact and we heard more from the attorney general who is leading the state

to the battleground state of wisconsin where shaquille brewster is in milwaukee.the feeling there? >> reporter: you're also hearing a lot of excitement. the reason we keep coming back to milwaukee, this is a place where the lack of democratic enthusiasm in 2016 helped president trump win the state. you are the owner of rising grand cafe. what did you think when you heard kamala harris was on the ticket? >> i was very excited. being a single mom, african-american woman with two daughters growing up, it's amazing for her to be a presidential pick and be on the ticket. it's a game changer, you know. it's changing history and that's what i want. >> reporter: your 15-year-old daughter was a little skeptical when she heard kamala harris. what was her opinion? >> actually, it was my 21-year-old. she was a little skeptical. she wants to make sure her agenda is what it is. she's a millennial. she's looking at everything right now. and that's what i want her to be. i want her to, you know, challenge her own thoughts and make sure whoever she is voting for has her own agenda

as you said, nbc's shaquille brewster in connaughton, j gentleman. >>> texas ranks third behind california of covid cases. in one coastal community this is a shockingly high number of infants infected. janelle ross jones us from corpus christi, texas. this flies in the face of what we have been hearing from president trump about kids essentially being immune from getting virus. >> reporter: yes, that is true. here in oasis county, which includes portions of padre island where i am standing. there are a total of at least 187 infants who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus. and unfortunately, among those one child has died. and local public health officials believe that much this activity, including many of the 14,000 cases of coronavirus in this county are tied to some of the things that people do while trying to deal with social distancing. they aim to get outside. and here in corpus christi, here on padre island, as you can see behind me, for many people that means going to the beach. this is what the local health director had to say about the risk and what that's creating. >> as we

[ gunshots ] >> nbc's shaquille brewster is in kenosha. shaq, what in the world do we know about what happened? what's going on this morning? >> well, steph, this morning the outrage continues but so does the cleanup. this is a car dealership. the cars were on fire last night. this is damage that extends block by block. this -- this dealership alone i'm told there are more than 100 cars damaged. but what sparked all of this was that police shooting that you describe last night. it was the 29th -- the shooting of a 29-year-old man, jacob blake. they arrived and were responding to a domestic incident. that's when they say you see from that video, you see mr. blake walk around the car and the officer fire at him, toward his back more than seven times. at least seven times that you hear in that video. steph, the outrage after that video came out, it went viral on social media. and the outrage after that video was nearly instants. you saw people responding to it, people marching immediately. clashes with police. as they marched d

time, portland, oregon, pacific time. 45 minutes into the press briefing, i want to bring in shaquille brewster, nbc political reporter, josh levinson political news. shaq, i guess to take a look at what we've heard so far, is the mayor and his team very much on their heels after they've had a death overnight. >> reporter: that's exactly right. let's start with the investigation and what we learned from the police chief there. they're still not connecting that big rally of trump supporters, that caravan that went downtown to the shooting of men last night. they're saying they're still researching. they're still investigating to see exactly what happened there. but what you heard from the mayor and the police chief is a flat condemnation of the violence. they said they condemn all the violence in all forms. they said that anyone should be able to go out and exercise their political believes and talk about their political believes witho beliefs without fear of violence. you heard retribution, possible retribution they said was popping up on twitter and social media. you see a mayor and a police c

my colleague, shaquille brewster, is there. let's talk about tonight and kamala harris hitting the stage. think about the criticisms, the far right and the far left both go after her, the right saying she's the most liberal member of the senate which, of course, she's not. and the far left saying she's too pro police. what are we going to see tonight? how is she going to thread that needle? >> well, stephanie, the thing is tonight will be one of the largest audiences senator harris will have. it's an opportunity for her to define herself. an aide to senator harris telling her own story, share her own experience and experiences of others. we will expect her to make the case for, of course, vice president joe biden, who she's running with. she will draw a clear contrast with the leadership of donald trump, but let's not also lose the sense of history that we will have tonight. senator harris will be the first woman of color to accept a major party's nomination for vice president. there's some history and some symbolism there. she

shaquille brewster joins us. shaq, good morning to you. how are people reacting to schools reopening? >> alex, you know, school officials are learning how best to reopen schools in real time amid this pandemic. here in cherokee county, over 260 students and teachers are under quarantine orders as there have been -- i'll let that pass. as there have been 21 students and staff who have tested positive for this virus. when you talk to parents and students, you hear a mixed message. on one end you hear parents who say, hey, the quarantine showed that the system is working. they're making sure they're keeping our students safe. on the other hand you hear parents who are more concerned. you see those letters going out from the principal to families each and every day since school opened this first week and they're growing more concerned. listen to the sample of my conversations. >> i think it screams out kind of a warning red flag, because, yes, these kids probably weren't exposed to it at school yet, but now those kids at school have been expos

. >> let's go to shaquille brewster in kenosha where the president will be tomorrow. the scene for us as to what the president will be walking into. we saw businesses burn, the national guard called in. now a week later, what will he be walking into tomorrow? >> reporter: steve, right now there is a big divide over president trump's planned visit to kenosha on tuesday. when the white house announced this visit on saturday night, by sunday you had opposition to this trip from kenosha's mayor. you had opposition from the attorney general of wisconsin, who is currently leading the investigation into the shooting of jacob blake. and you had a letter from wisconsin governor tony evers expressing -- or asking the president to delay and postpone this trip. part of that letter says i, along with other community leaders who have reached out, are concerned about what your presence will mean for kenosha and our state. i am concerned your presence will only hinder our healing. on the other hand you have many republican leaders in this state still inviting the president, saying th

with nbc's shaquille brewster in kenosha for us this morning to start on the breaking news. talk to us about what is about to happen at this extradition hearing involving that 17-year-old shooting suspect. >> reporter: that hearing will begin any minute now. we know he's in custody now, kyle rittenhouse 17-year-old man who is accused of shooting and killing two protesters on tuesday night and injuring a third. he's facing about six charges right now including intentional homicide, reckless homicide, reckless endangerment and possession of a deadly weapon. we'll expect to see him in court any minute now. but overnight, hallie, we got a statement from his attorney, who says that this is a classic case of self-defense and they're promising to fight for him and provide justice for him no matter -- despite how long it takes is what his attorney is saying. any minute now, we expect to see more from -- expect to see that hearing begin and we'll expect to hear more about what happened that tuesday night when kyle was accused of killing two people. hallie? >> and we're also hearing t

shaquille brewster is in kenosha. us what you're seeing this morning and how it went overnight. >> reporter: the suspect wither is 17-year-old from antioch, illinois, about 30 minutes south of where we are right now, across the border of course. he's charged with intentional homicide. he is still in custody in illinois. there's some point he'll be transferred over to come up and face charges here in kenosha. it's not clear if he was part of any formal group but there was a video an interview that he did with "the daily caller" reporter in which he explained why he was here. he was here to help protect the business and also said that he wanted to help anyone who was in harm's way and he explained that was the reason why he had his rifle. it's important to note that night, as we were watching protests, many people did have their rifles, many people had long guns, people had handguns, there was large presence of guns as people came to both say they were protecting businesses, but also say they were protecting protesters.

nbc shaquille brewster was one of the few journalists able to watch that footage last month before iteased to the public and he joins me now from chicago. shaq, i actually want to start with the violence that we saw, and then we'll talk a little bit about that george floyd footage. first, what's the latest on the ground ahead of these restrictions in chicago tonight? >> kasie, the situation in downtown chicago still remains tense this afternoon. you see businesses still boarding up, still cleaning up the mess we saw from the looting and destruction last night. police say this all started yesterday after a police-involved shooting. they say they were responding to a call and saw suspects who then began to run. that's when he turned, fired officer and that's when he returned that fire shooting and injuring a black man in the inglewood community, a south side neighborhood of chicago. but then they said misinformation started to spread about the age of the suspect, about the circumstances surrounding the community. that led to a tense standoff in that area. but then you saw an organized e

for more of our special coverage tonight, we bring in nbc's shaquille brewster, who's live from kenoshasconsin, on the ground and the black lives matter activist and civil rights leader mckesson. he's the author of, "on the other side of freedom." what is happening on the ground, particularly since this arrest? >> reporter: well, right now, it's -- things are calm but the tension is still there because we saw this happen just yesterday where ahead of the curfew, things remained relatively peaceful but after the curfew, that's when you saw the clashes between protesters and police. of course, today, the difference is the curfew is one hour earlier. the police explaining that and the reasoning they did that as being they wanted to be able to clear areas like the area i'm in, this park that's in front of the courthouse. they want to be able to clear it from protesters, from people once that curfew is in effect and they want to do that in the daylight and take advantage of the daylight there. but of course, police have that 17-year-old in custody right now. that was a shooting that happened
