"outfront" tonight, shasta darlington. what was the reaction when the announcement of chavez's death was made? >> reporter: you know, you might be surprised, but a lot of people were not prepared for this. even though we haven't seen hugo chavez in public for almost three months, just last week, according to a poll, 57% of venezuelans said they still expected him to recover. so this is definitely a bitter pill for those people to swallow and what you've seen is people going out into the streets, going out into the squares and the plazas closest to the government buildings, people crying, showing their support and really showing their respect and love for a leader who really helped pull a lot of poor venezuelans out of poverty and helped reduce that gap between the rich and the poor. on the other hand, his critics, this is a very tense moment for them. you're going to hear from a lot of people who just want to get home, they want to get through this very tense period without any conflict between those who were for chavez, w

shasta darlington is live in caracas.on now is what happens to chavez's social revolution? will maduro, the vice president, will he keep it going? >> reporter: well, you know, that's definitely the plan. he is the handpicked successor for hugo chavez. and he's already stepped up the rhetoric, showing he can walk the walk and talk the talk. what we need to see, though, is once everything is over and done with, we'll have elections, polls indicate that maduro will likely win those elections against the opposition candidate. what can he do from there? that's because so far over the past 14 years, hugo chavez has managed to really reduce the gap between the rich and the poor, bring people out of poverty. and done a lot of specific things like introducing health clinics into neighborhoods that didn't have doctors, education. but he's done that with all of the revenues from the very abundant oil reserves here. and those have been to a certain degree depleted. maduro will be up against a rock here. those reserves have been -- ha

shasta darlington joins us now with reaction from buenos aires.argentines by surprise, as well. they were expecting another argentine cardinal could become a pope but this was the big surprise. hundreds of people came right out here to the cathedral right behind me where now pope francis celebrated mass. they were jumping up and down in the streets as though they had just won a soccer match. it was a lot of excitement. this is a man who is celebrated here because of his dedication to the poor. in fact, when he was named archbishop he rejected the official residence. instead, chose to live in a simple apartment right here on the other side of me, the third floor. he cooked his own meals. he traveled by bus. i just talked to the man who sold him his newspaper every day. he came out, bought his newspaper and chat with the homeless people who slept here on the streets on his way to get the newspaper. on the other hand there is controversy around here, not the same controversy, but about what some observers say was his proximity to the argentine dictat
