i want to bring in shasta darlington live this morning. >> reporter: good morning.e images are apocalyptic. the first eruption sent a huge mushroom shaped cloud of ash into the sky. we saw lightning and multicolored clouds. for the residents, it was absolute panic. many of them rushed to evacuate. they lined up at gas stations to buy gas and to buy water. of course officials have evacuated more than 4,400 people. they set up the zone about 13 miles wide around the volcano trying to isolate it and keep people safe. luckily no one was injured. a hiker was missing, but he was found. what volcanologists are keeping an eye on is the activity. calbuco has calmed down for the time being, but it will likely go off a third time because we could see more of that ash which is damaging for livestock and agriculture. if we see any significant amount of lava, that could start melting the glaciers in the region and we could see flooding. we are very much on alert. the tourist towns are on alert. officials say they could widen the area of evacuation if we see a third eruption john.

joining us on the phone right now is cnn's shasta darlington.ived at your location over there. how far away from the volcano are you right now, and what are you seeing? >> well wolf we're 14 miles from the volcano. we're in a town where many of the evacuees have been sent. they're still sleeping in schools here. you can imagine on the one hand it's this beautiful sight, an active volcano. this thing is belching out ash and smoke as we speak. not a full eruption but it just doesn't stop smoking. this is just terrifying for the people around here especially because officials have said that they expect another crater is opening up inside the volcano and that there very likely could be a third eruption. people here of course just want to see this smoking come to a stop so they can head home. at this point, most of the ash, these billowing clouds are being blown towards argentina, over the mountains there. so we're actually seeing flights canceled across argentina. we're headed to a town inside the exclusion zone. it's about 12 miles around the volca

very expensive place to live and people live here can't afford to provide the same services that shasta provides for the same rate. colleagues today i'm calling for the cities attorneys office to draft legislation to have the insulation of black boxes across our city fleet. last thursday we held ahering on a report requested from budget and legislative analyst about potential public installing vehicle telematics or black boxes across the city fleet. the initial motivation behind the study was to assess whether or not equipting the cities vehicles with black boxes improve the driving behavior of the city workers. the city paid out is a 76.9 million in settlement and judgment over the past 5 years because of vehicle collisions. the insulation of black boxes including efficient, better fleet management and increase ability to address unsafe driving practices. this technology is also proven cost savings to other cities that adopted similar problems. the city of sacramento reported scicktd thousand savings in the first month after smalling the system for 184 vehicles. in the eastern municipa

cnn's shasta darlington is joining us now, close to that volcano. shasta where are you? that volcano? >> hi wolf we're about ten miles from the volcano. we're in ensenada. this was one of the first towns evacuated after the violent erupgtse eruptions eruptions, blankets of ash came crashing down on this town. can you see over my shoulder calbuco is smoking again. it really has people on edge. some residents came back to try to sweep layers of ash off the roofs of their houses. only to find that after lying, quieting down for about a day, it's smoking again, and officials are also saying that they believe this has been unstable this has not calmed down. that possibly another crater is opening up inside the volcano. and that people should be prepared for a third eruption. in fact they've even ordered more evacuations today of another 2,000 people. here in ensenada. while people were cleaning up their houses they brought in some trucks to truck out all of the animals, they had to leave their horses their sheep, many of their dogs behind. even took the salmon out of the rive

to you, shasta darlington being there also this brings up the question of the cuban people.ver the past four months to the thawing of relations, the work towards normalizing relations between the united states and cuba despite these differences that president obama points out will remain. what do we know about what the cuban people are saying and how they're reacting to this? >> reporter: well it's interesting, poppy, even before this summit started earlier this week a poll was released by "the washington post" infusion. they were able to get some posters on the island to carry out this poll in cuba. and according to to this more than 90% of cubans want to see the normalization of relations. and also it showed that president obama is more than twice as popular as raul castro or fidel castro on the island. so this is a reflection of the cuban youth. cuba is a very young country right now. so there's a lot of excitement about this a lot of anticipation. but i also think it's interesting when we heard raul castro speaking today, as you mentioned he first just lit up going over
