shawn: absolutely. this is the first time over the past year that we have had the technocrats sitting down across from each other and working on the details. it is the first time we've seen it. in the past, we've seen high-level delegations going to beijing or coming here in washington and sitting down and talking in broader, more political terms. this is the hard work that you need to get a deal done. it's a good sign that it is happening. but again, we need to be cautious. we are hearing that the u.s. in this case is more in a listening mode. they want to hear what the chinese are prepared to offer. they are going to take that back to washington. i think we are likely to see a higher level meeting perhaps xiween bob lighthizer and jinping's tops economic advisor at some point possibly later this month and we will go from there. everyone here is working towards a march 1 deadline, that's incredible tight. the issues are incredibly complex area and there's a lot of work to do. than two hours ago we got

shawn joins us from d.c. what indication do we have on what progress is being made?> the president's morning declared good progress, that the mood is upbeat in the negotiating room. we have also had the clearest indication -- we have been saying for some time that trump wants a deal. today he came out and said he is getting ready to seal a deal with xi jinping, that he will be meeting with him in the near future to hash out the final details. all of that said, what we are hearing is that the chinese came with very little new this week to washington, other than an invitation for trump to meet with xi. some questions about the substance of any deal at this point. vonnie: what does it seem like will happen at this meeting with xi? trump wants to say that this is his doing, but if they are meeting, doing necessarily get a deal? they cannot meet and come away without a deal. >> the traditional way to do haves with be to everything precooked before a series of negotiations, probably months, before the leaders sit down. that is what the chinese had been hoping for. we will
