shawnee, oklahoma at least one person dead in that area. we can tell you that the person who died in shawnee just outside of oklahoma city was confirmed during fox report but now we are learning more and seeing so much more with our own eyes. tornado warnings still in effect from minnesota to oklahoma. janice dean is in the fox extreme weather center with the latest. janice? >> i want to show you the radar without the watch so you can see where the parent storm is moving out of the rockies and ahead of it that's where we saw the storms really erupt out of nowhere ahead of the cold front. when you have these rouge storms that kinds of form ahead of the front that is the most dangerous type of super cell you can have. because it doesn't have the energy of the other storms around it and in back of it, if you will. as you see the worst hit right now the report we are getting out of kansas and oklahoma city, wichita as well as south and east of oklahoma city where the devastating pictures are coming in from shawnee, oklahoma. watches and warning

i'm headed back towards that shawnee direction now. >> and jason, you're going back towards shawnee, but you have been following these storms all day. where did you pick up, and where did you -- you ended up where you are now, but where did you start earlier? >> my day started right off there in edmond, oklahoma, which is where the first tornado touched down. we were out there with good warning, had about a 20-minute lead time before the tornado touched down in edmond. that tornado lifted and edmond is on the northeast side of oklahoma city. that tornado lifted, and immediately we had just a very large tornado, around half a mile wide touch down, and it continued to track just north of i-40, and that's the storm that i stayed on, and then the southern storm formed down there on the southeast side of oklahoma city, and i actually headed south back out of the storm that i was on just in time to catch it. you had another tornado near the community of prague when it touched down shortly before dark. >> jason, tell us about the damage that you saw. >> so far i have not been through the da

there's shawnee, oklahoma. that's where casey is.t's where we have an ef-4 tornado move through. debris on theground. we have houses that are leveled, and this storm is going to come very close to shawnee, and then we have another tornado warned storm south of the area. so these are large supercells that we see on doppler radar, the hook echo we look for in a tornado warned storm, but storms on the ground. tornadoes on the group. from weather spotters and as you can see right now, live unfolding on your television screen. but, neil, i have to say that some of the reports i'm seeing are really ominous, and unfortunately, as casey mentioned, these storms are happening in the exact same areas that we saw tornado damage yesterday. so, -- >> neil: not only there but the most severe of all the storms back in may 1999, in this very area. so, what is it about this area that tends to -- i know large, flat areas and the supercells sighted, you point to, a huge swath of land, but a huge swath where 60 million americans live. and not in this are

the big tornado now ef-4 was the shawnee tornado. it started just to the east of norman and moved right across called highway 9 and right into the shawnee area. a very large single cell thing. it's called a supercell tornado when they're out there all by themselves like that. that's when they rotate. and this thing was probably in the neighborhood of probably 200 miles per hour. today, we're seeing sunshine. and you would think to yourself, well, that's a great thing. no, that's exactly the opposite of what they want. that sunshine's heating the ground. it's heating the humidity. it's all going to go back up in the sky like a hot air balloon. and it's going to cause same places, same storms, probably more hail than tornadoes today, but still you wouldn't want to be out there without any protection with wind and hail damage whether it's a tornado or not, wolf. >> chad used to work in that area. he knows the story well. >> i did. >> chad, we'll stay in close touch with you as well. here's what else we're working on this hour, she thoug

nick valencia is in shawnee, oklahoma. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol.e sun has come up, it's given us a new perspective of the damage in this mobile home park behind me. this is where the elderly gentleman was killed as a result of the tornado. you can see behind me that home with its roof completely ripped off. and right next to it, a home standing intact. but just to give you some perspective of how massive and how powerful this tornado was, check this out. this is a tree probably about maybe more than 20 feet tall, 10 feet wide at its base. roots completely ripped from the ground. and we're on the fringes of this mobile home park. you can only imagine the devastation our viewers are looking at, the pictures. unimaginable video coming through there. amazing only one person was killed. we know at least six were injured according to the county sheriff mike booth who told me that two of the injuries were serious injuries. and you mentioned as residents are just now recovering, a new round of threats, new round of severe weather is it expeexpect through t

certainly shawnee, an area devastated just yesterday less than 24 hours ago is now in the cross hairs. shepherd, when we are talking about these winds starting to pick up, obviously it is way preliminary, but the national weather service has sort of been talking to some of the local reporters here. they can't really make a determination in terms of what the scale was of this thing if this was an ef4, an ef5, the way in which tornadoes are measured. we know an ef5 is the strongest, but indications look like this could be an ef5. winds in excess of 200 miles per hour. that's stronger than the category 5 hurricane and that's why you have seen such devastation coming out of the moore, oklahoma area. and it is important to note that -- this is southwest oklahoma city. that's the issue here, shepherd. this is a densly populated area as i'm sure you know. this is an area that has schools in it, has malls in it, densly populated, a lot of homes, a lot of businesses. it is frightening to think of the casualties we could see here. >> when you look at these live pictures coming in, again all we

jim cantore is on the scene because of the shawnee storm yesterday. this must be a first for you? >> well, i had this feeling in my gut before, unfortunately, once we arrived on the scene, it's pretty much, you know, pretty much -- it's everything i imagined and heard on the radio coming up here. you have three to -- right now i'm in new castle, about six plus miles to the southwest of moore. this is where the tornado traveled a very long path on the east side of moore and continued to do damage. even here in new castle with the initial touchtown, i'm looking at 3, 5,000 square foot homes that have been completely leveled. trees have been debarked. in other words, all of the bark has been stripped off the trees. even this initial hit right here in new castle, one can say we had at least 150 to 180 mile-per-hour winds if not greater, the same kind of damage as in shawnee, perhaps even worse from what i'm looking at. your coverage that people are asking via social media for help to be dug out. so there is still very many people we understand trapped in rubble from new castle up to m

this is the latest this is what has happened here in shawnee. this is the bricker family. they hunker fd down with 14 neighbors in a next door neighbor's sherlt when these tornados hit. members of their church are helping them get through this. they watched the weather channel and their local affiliate. this is what the radar looked like last system as the systems spawned over a three-state area. the good news is only one person was killed. it could have been worse. more than 20 injured. scores of homes damaged or destroyed. as you can see here's what will happen today with the same areas under the gun. we have a lot of warm, moist air coming n. colder air behind it with a strong jet stream. as you can see we are looking at a big problem with the future cast. there's lines of shower and thunderstorms starting to fire up once again. we have a slight risk of strong storms from brady, texas to michigan but a strong risk making its way from dallas in to parts of southern missouri. that's going to be the big problem. somebody who was here watching this all unfold yesterday was

>> reporter: this powerful twister measuring a half mile wide in parts leveled homes in shawnee. rescue workers rushed to the scene to help the injured. at least one person did not survive the storm. sheriff's officials confirm a 79-year-old man was found dead in the rubble. this woman got out just moments before the tornado hit her home. >> it just hit and all we could see was a big funnel of water coming up and we turned around and came back and it was gone. >> reporter: the oklahoma twisters were part of the same storm system that stretched from texas to minnesota. this whip-like twister hit kansas outside of wichita. in iowa barns were ripped apart and sheet metal was scattered across lawns and farms. >> this has been the most significant outbreak of severe weather we have seen all spring. >> reporter: 26 tornadoes were reported on sunday. and it may not be over yet. >> the greatest risk for severe weather and the possibility of tornadoes exists once again in an around the oklahoma city area, northeast of tulsa, also into joplin, missouri. >> reporter: the threat of severe we

among them, the town of shawnee, 30 miles outside of oklahoma city. that community took a direct hit. sayssy stiegel has been on the scene since last night. he joins us live. casey. >> reporter: jon, it is so wild when you see video of those tornados and they drop down out of the sky. they are only on the ground for a few minutes. they can even skip around a little bit. the damage is so random. look right here. this is a mobile home just to my right. you can see that the front portion of it, the facade has actually been ripped away but the structure itself and 10 toward the year rear of it is still standing and it isn't touched f we walk over here i want to show you this spot here. back there was another mobile home and it was entirely lifted off of the concrete foundation and all of this debris scattered right here, this is someone's life. this is a woman's life we have seen combing through it this morning. she has been out here digging through. she is trying to find a picture. she is trying to find something she can salvage. where does one even begi

some the same areas that were hard hit yesterday in shawnee, oklahoma where we saw or heard from casey stegall ef-4 went through that area winds of close to 200 miles per hour. and again some of these areas being hit again. where you see the red polygonzales on your screen those are active tornado warnings. unfortunately the threat is not over. showing you with shawnee son the map where casey stegall was that's where we had our ef-4 move through. moore is south and east of oklahoma city. this is one ever the cells that came very close or on top of moore. this wasn't the super cell that produced that large destructive tornado but just to give you an indication that the threat is not over yet. we have active tornado warnings and tornadoes perhaps on the ground. all along this line of storms that has developed and, bret, this is really the peak time for tornadoes because you have got the day-time heating the sun has not really set just yet. we are still looking at the ingredients favorable for tornadoes throughout the rest of the afternoon into the evening and into the overnight. wide swa

casey stiegel live on the ground in shawnee. what are you seeing this morning, casey. >> reporter: bill, good morning. we talk about the mobile home park. that is where the single fatality has been confirmed. it is not far from where i am. they're not letting us in. you don't have to far to see the damage. i want to show you around here. this is 30 miles southeast of oklahoma city. look at this. this is an oven that was once sitting in someone's kitchen, that was in a home actually about 30 feet that way. follow me around here. you can literally see people's lives scattered across fields. here's a couch from someone's living room. a washer, and then this here, this little chunk of debris here, this is a wall. so all of this is, was sitting in a mobile home that was, as i said, about 30 feet or so back that way. the homeowner here tells me that they went through a tornado right back in 2010. so they hank cored the mobile home into a con receipt -- concrete foundation secured into the ground in hopes it would survive another twist
