as shell shock. doctors have encountered mental breakdown in war before. but world war i, it felt like they were coming at an unprecedented rate. statistics are difficult to calculate. especially true for world war i where the conception of mental illness and diseases caused by war were nebulous. difficult to say whether or not there were more psychiatric cass nuts world war i than there were during the civil war. it is possible to say that psychiatrists were reacting in a way they hadn't before. this was due to the increased professional organization during world war i that psychiatrists were able to approach the war with a unified approach. american psychiatrist would later describe shell shock as a tabula rosa. even though the psychiatry profession presented a unified front it doesn't mean they presented a unified understanding. an examples of these different opinions can be seen in the work of british psychiatrist charles myers and frederick mott. myers was not the first doctor to suggest shell s
