i' m shelley walcott. will the nice weather stick around for the rest of the weekend and when could we see the coldest air yet this season? chief meteorologist mike haddad is here to explain. mike: it was a fairly pleasant start to the new year today. temperatures a little above the average. classic early winter day. great for ski areas to add the fresh powder. notice some of the snow showers have come in in the form of snow squalls. they are lingering in the great north woods. having said that, the lakes region north could be snow covered on the roadways or maybe have some black ice. keep that in mind. concord and points north, all freezing or below. just a bit above that for manchester points south and southeast. there is cold air to the north and west. after a seasonably cool weekend, temperatures do tumble for early next week. how much colder doesn' t get? when do we see more snow? we will look at that straight ahead. shelley: and you can stay up to date with the latest forecast and radar by using our

shelley: i' m shelley walcott. some freezing rain and light snow also sent cars sliding on route 89. wmur' s jean mackin was out on the roads all evening long. she joins us with the latest. jean: it looks good but what a start to the weekend. state police responded to about 15-20 accidents here. while there were some minor injuries, they say no serious injuries. nothing but brake-lights in the northbound lanes of interstate 93 in canterbury, same goes for the southbound side, where the new hampshire dot reported several accidents. like this car towed from the side of the highway. plans. traffic so stalled we were able to get out and talk to drivers stopped in their tracks. >> i got a text. they said that she said, they turned -- shut it off. worse of the state capital. several problems were also reported on state police were 89. busy handling one accident after the next. road crews headed out to treat the icy stretches of interstate that surprised some drivers >> i want to go home. >> great. >> trying to get home.

shelley: washington d.c. and baltimore are two of the cities expected to see the most snow from this storm, as well as gale-force winds. officials are urging people to stay home and not go out. in washington, the federal government closed its offices at noon, and mass transit is shut down through sunday. this could be the biggest snowfall in the nation' in 90 years. tom: all major airlines are waiving change fees as they to the storm. and a number of travelers going through manchester-boston regional got caught up in the mess. that' s where we find wmur' s stephanie woods. stephanie: just because that mid-atlantic states doesn' we don' t feel the headache hear re in new hampshire. moving forward there are nearly a dozen departing and arriving flights that are canceled going in and out of manchester. that is leaving a lot of people out in the cold. >> just trying to get home before things totally shut down so keeping my fingers crossed . stephanie: karen hart is in manchester on business and trying to get home

shelley: i' m shelley walcott. many school districts across the state are considering the same move, and tonight, nashua voted to take the step. our jean mackin explains how it will work. jean: nashua' s school superintendent says there' s never been an opioid overdose in any of the schools in his district that he' s aware of but he called on the school board to stock schools with narcan just in case, and the board agreed. nashua' s school superintendent urged the school board to be proactive by having the nasal mist version of naloxone in the nurses office. he wants school nurses and principals able to administer narcan. in a district with more than 11,000 students it would also be parents in the event of an overdose. >> it' s easy to administer a nasal spray, no known allergies, you' ve misdiagnosed to his to harm them. jean: he explained the narcan does not have to be administered that it would be provided by the state. while there were some questions. >> i question whether we enable people with the narcan. jean

i'm shelley walcott, wmur news 9. tom: while the mid atlantic digs out from a major snowstorm, winter events in new hampshire are dealing with unseasonably warm temperatures. suzanne roantree is in meredith tonight where the pond hockey tournament is being moved off lake winnipesaukee. suzanne? reporter: yes, the ice out behind me here on meredith bay is just starting to be safe enough to put a bob house on. it wasn't until this last friday that many of the bays on lake winnipesaukee even had any ice on them. times was of the essence in hockey tournament would be held. with questions lingering about the upcoming fishing derby as well. monday crews were plowing the 4 to 6 inches of snow that's covering the ice in meredith. it's less than a mile away from where the new england pond hockey classic was scheduled to be played the first weekend of february. >> it changes the event, definitely, but we're still able to host it, which is awesome. we didn't want to have to postpone it because of all the people who have flights

i'm shelley walcott, wmur news 9. jennifer: tonight a judge is considering whether or not to reduce a convicted sex offender's sentence. in 2014 the judge said it was too harsh. now new hampshire's supreme court says the judge has the authority to make an adjustment if he wants. wmur's kristen carosa was in court today, she's live tonight at our lakes region bureau. reporter: a review hearing was held this afternoon, the victim's mother tells us this has been a painful process to go through as they wait for this decision. judge david garfunkel is considering reducing the sentence of joshua baud, a man who was convicted of sexually girl. >> i'm kind of wondering why, and everybody is wondering why, because it makes no sense. we all thought it was over and done with. reporter: that was the victim's mother who was in court for the hearing, a long with her judge. >> it hurts. forget. reporter: within a week after garfunkel sentenced baud in 2014, he said the sentence was too harsh. at the time it wasn't clear if the defen

shelley walcott is in the the latest details. shelley: paperwork from the u.s. attorney's office now says they've arrested the man who owns that home. the documents say 52-year-old daniel muso wanted to buy weapons and was involved in antigovernment discussions. this is video of him from a confrontation he was involved in in concord in 2013. the affidavit said the f.b.i. was tipped off last august when and asked about buying $16,000 worth of ammunition. that included grenades, gas masks and rockets. then last week muso met with an weapons dealer. he told the agent he was part a group of people who wanted to, quote, bring forth the original constitution, and that's why he needed the ammunition. he was arrested yesterday, and charged with violating a federal firearms law. we'll have more on this coming up at 6:00. 9. josh: a convicted sex offender's sentence could be reduced now that the new hampshire supreme court has cleared the judge in the case to change his mind. kristen carosa is live in our lakes region bureau with the developments in this case. reporter: t
