. >> shimon prokupecz joining me right now. it is so hard to hear of the families' anguish.and express and share what are families asking right now? i mean law enforcement isn't providing the kind of details and footage that you and your teams here at cnn are able to provide. >> right. so one of the things that family members want to know is exactly how their children died that day. because it took law enforcement for so long to enter that classroom, you hear kim rubio there talk about how she's wondering if her daughter suffered and for how long. and if only the police had entered much sooner, her belief is that at least maybe if her daughter died fairly quickly once the gunman started shooting, that she didn't suffer. some sort of solace or hope that maybe her daughter didn't suffer. now, other parents of survivors wanting to know exactly what their kids went through in those 77 minutes, what those kids went through when they were finally rescued and ran out of those rooms, what kind of injuries exactly they suffered and the trauma, the sort of psychological effects of all

. >> we're joined by cnn senior crime and justice correspondent shimon prokupecz who has been on topar from this press conference that there is frustration not only from officials who are trying to get answers but also from the families who are coming to you seeking information. >> reporter: yeah, and i spoke to the mayor last night before our documentary aired. i've talked to the mayor several times, we've interviewed him. he's pretty pissed off because he's been asking for information for the last year. he's only learning information when we bring him information. in fact he's forced a resignation and nearly fired one of the police officers because of our reporting. so certainly you can tell that his frustration, it's not lessening. i think he's at a point where he thinks he'll start to get some information soon, but he needs that information so he can make decisions about police officers at the local level that are still working for the uvalde police department. of course all of this happening, as we aired our special last night with families coming to us asking us to show them vi

shimon prokupecz is joining us now from uvalde, where this is a community that is coping still a year i think, feeling a lot of anger, a lot of anxiety. i was just talking to some family members that we featured in our documentary sunday night. they actually came here and dropped off flowers, mia cerrillo, who was one of the girls who called 911, as she's on that bus with the other students who were rescued, some 77 minutes after and they came here to lay flowers. but you can tell that this is really affecting the families today and the survivors. you can just see it, you can just feel it. there were tears in her eyes. and you could, you know, having been around these people for a little while now, there's definitely a different feeling today than there has been any other day that i've certainly seen them. it's just vareally sad to see. i can only imagine the memories this must bring back for many of the survivors and for these families, who a year ago were on the streets here, as police were at this point rescuing their kids or some of these parents finding out that their kids were b

shimon prokupecz, thank you for that. jim?ained this photo of what appears to be the gunman on the ground on the left in black with an ar-15-style weapon just nearby as well as several magazines on the gunman's person. the high-powered assault rifle has been the weapon of choice in many of the country's mass shootings. most recently the louisville bank, the covenant school in nashville, tennessee, the walmart in virginia just last fall. a defining characteristic of this kind of weapon is the speed and the power of its bullets. researchers at wayne state university have studied how an ar-15 blast impacts the human body. their findings are terrifying. this is a block of 20% gelatin it's meant to mimic how human flesh reacts to a gunshot. watch as the team fires a handgun round. this is at 1,000 feet per second into the block. relatively straight line. it comes out the opposite side. now watch as the team fires a round from an assault rifle. it explodes inside and remains inside the flesh. again, this mimicking the reactions the

shimon prokupecz is following the story. let's start with what's next in the story. >> ultimately, right now, as much as we know about this individual, really the hate, the heat keep believed in really there is still this thing they need to do, authorities need to figure them out of. is there something else going on here that perhaps sparked this? so, that's investigators are now doing. you know, we learned so much about him through his social media. >> yeah, what did we learn today? >> so, he believes, you know, he's just a person filled with a hate, anti black, anti women. neo-nazi kind of beliefs and things that he wrote about. so, we know he's 33 years old. he has all of this writing and all this social media posts. we also know, that this is significant, he was at the mall casing it out, sort of figuring out when was the busiest time, one of the best time for him to launch his attack. so, authorities have a lot of that information now. we know that he purchased the weapons from a private kind of sale, so there's really

joining us now is cnn senior crime and justice correspondent, shimon prokupecz. ral times. get teary-eyed several times. it is impossible not to. tell us how difficult it was, the moment where you're sitting with the parents, and you're looking at this video of these kids covered in blood. >> yeah, so when it pertains to chloe's mother, jamie there, jamie torres, she's an incredibly brave woman. she wanted to see this video, she knew we had it. we talked about it. she said, i want to see it. and for me, the sitting there and it was the most difficult thing to know, knowing that i was going to show her this video. i knew it was important for her to see and for the world to see so they can get a picture into what these kids went through. i think it's -- we're at a point in this country where it's important for people to see what these guns do to these kids. and the mom agreed. and you see there, sort of this moment of when all of these kids are on the school bus. there were not enough plambulans to put these kids in ambulances. two of them were shot. one of them nea

shimon prokupecz, cnn, uvalde, texas. >> dr.ou for being with us on what is a difficult time for so many. you and i are having this conversation, and it takes place on what i would call a continuum of tragedy. uvalde is only the latest. your organization, your association, in 2016 declared gun violence a public health crisis. since then, there has been a 50% increase in gun deaths. why do you think that there has not been certainly public opinion or legislators to be able to coalesce around this one tragic fact? >> paula, thanks for having me on. indeed, it's really discouraging that we have reached this point. the devastation of firearm violence in america really touches every state, every community. the numbers are awful. more than 45,000 deaths per year. as you said, those numbers have gone up. the number one cause of death now among children and adolescents between the ages of 1 and 19 -- that's more than motor vehicle accidents or drug overdoses or cancer. that statistic is appalling to me. and it's an epidemic. just as we
