they're co-hosts of showtime's "the circus." dressed or not. okay. let's get to the top story. >>> many of the republican names will not be attending the cpac in maryland this week. potential 2024 candidates, ron desantis, former vice president mike pence and governor glenn youngkin will not be at the gathering. mcdaniels, house speaker kevin mccarthy, mitch mcconnell, they're all sitting it out this year, as well. this year's conference comes as cpac's chair, matt schlapp, faces a lawsuit saying he fondled a male aid for herschel walker without consent in october. schlapp's lawyers says he denies the allegations. none of the politicians who say they're not attending have cited schlapp's allegations for reason of their absence. several republicans who spoke to nbc news anonymously have said the allegations are a factor in the broader movement away from the conference. the event, which in years past was one of the biggest events for conservatives, will feature speeches from former president donald trump, 2024 candidate nikki haley, congresswoman marjo

let's bring in to talk about this much more national affairs analyst, john highland, producer of showtime's, and he's also in warsaw this morning. we just passed this off as mitch mcconnell and chairman mccall being pro democracy cold warriors against a bunch of back benchers, the people were talking about mpg is a person who, of course, helped make mccarthy, speaker of the house, and then you have donald trump who says he's going to run basically as a peace nick, a pro-putin peace nick who, you know, wanted to blow nato apart. and you also have ron desantis who much to the surprise of the bucharest 9 and the countries that you visited, and i'm sure the leader of estonia would have something to say about desantis's remarks earlier this week that vladimir putin poses no risk, no threat to his neighbors. that's quite a divide in the republican party and you'll notice that two of those people that i mentioned, with these extreme positions, these -- i would say almost pro-putin positions when you say putin doesn't pose a risk. those are the two leading candidates for the republican nomination f
