that fire in the sierra nevada foothills is 50% contained but officials say it could take another two weeks to fully surround it. 63 homes and 68 other structures have been destroyed. about 1,500 structures are still threatened. >>> a grass fire that burned near gilroy is now 70% contained. the fire has burned about 150 acres since it broke out yesterday afternoon. it's in southern santa clara county. >>> chevron settled another series of complaints that stem from the 2012 refinery fire. the smoke sickened about 15,000 people. a corroded pipe was blamed for the fire. chevron will upgrade its facility. chevron settled other claims brought by people who were hurt by the smoke. it also paid $2 million in fines and restitution as part of a criminal case. >>> protesters blocked the front gates of richmond refinery this morning. they're demanding a halt to the company's transmountain pipeline in canada. the protesters secured themselves to oil barrels in a mock 12-foot-long pipeline. it would triple the capacity of the pipeline that runs from edmonton and calgary to british columbia. >>> b.

mike: a wildfire tearing through the sierra nevada mountains in california while another one is burningse of any national park. that fire almost a week old has burned through more than 70000 acres. will is live in los angeles. reporter: hey there, mike. we see more than 100 new wildfires break out in california this week alone. the map is painted with dozens of fires across the western united states and one of the biggest in california is the detweiler fire burning in the hit near yosemite national park and it's been brutal. it destroyed 60 homes, more than 60 structures and trying more than 70000 acres so far. homes and communities are in the fires path and mandatory evacuations remain in place in some areas. the good news is the containment numbers have jumped each day and is now 30% contained and fire crews are getting a little help. it is hot and dry and the winds have died down and authority say that is a welcomed gift. they are tacking from the air and takers are dropping more than 4500 firefighters are on the front lines trying to contain this massive fire. >> you add in the fact

impossible to keep our forests properly managed and the result has been severe tree overcrowding, the sierra nevada normally support between 20 and 100 trees per acre. the average tree density is now 266 trees per acre. this extreme overcrowding has stressed the trees to the point they can no longer resist drought and beetle infestation and disease. this has caused a massive tree dieoff and we have entire national forests now just waiting to explode with over 100 million dead trees. the heroic firefighters have kept them out of the hazard zones but the hazard zones are still there. we are only at the beginning of he fire season that combines fresh brush and those that didn't survive the drought. the firefighters i spoke with on saturday bitterly complain they can't cut fire breaks to isolate these zones because of the same so-called environmental laws. the house has pending before it the resilient federal forest act of 2017 that would allow us to restore good forest management, but we may already have run afoul of what churchill called history's terrible, chilling words, too late. mr. speaker, i ca

today looks to be the day that the thunderstorm activity makes it into the sierra nevada, tahoe and truckeee's a lot of fog over the bay. 60s, 70s and 80s and 90s inland. 8:02. sal, what would you give the traffic today? a c plus, b minus. >> c plus. it is average but i tend to be on the optimistic side. if i was a professor, i might be grading up a bit on the traffic today. let's look at 280. for example, if you look at downtown san jose and 280, it is not a bad commute. and if you go up the road just a little bit, you will see the traffic on highway 280 at the 880 interchange is a little slow. so the traffic gets slow neutrally. we can demonstrate that also with the maps using 280 northbound as an example. it slows at 880 where we showed you. it is a typical commute. not a lot of crashes going on. we had a couple northbound 85 after 280 is one. we had slow traffic right here in this area. we also have traffic that is getting to the south bay. it is slow on 880 and on the dumbarton and on the san mateo bridge. moving along to the east shore freeway. solid traffic from richmond down to berk
