you can see this is a view of the orange sky from earlier today. what i want to go ahead and show you is the way that light travels that has a big impact on why we are seeing this color. let's go ahead and get a look. you can see the shorter wavelength color like green, blue, indigo and violet, they don't travel that far. they all bounce backup wards. when longer wavelength colors like red, orange and yellow, they travel much further. they pass through the smoke and through our eyes, we see that orange and true red color everywhere. it has to do with the way the light travels. four major fires outside of the bay area, that's why we are getting choked with all of this smoke. the air quality right now for most of us is moderate to slightly unsligh slightsligh slightly unhealthy. now coming up, this is real important. i am going to show you what we could get to help clear out the smoke. we'll talk about a weaken system and a chance of rain next week. >> everybody is looking at this orange skies across the area. the bay bridge shrouded orange and sauso

wildfires in the county are causing this orange sky. look at it. the oak fire prompted evacuations in a 40 square mile radius and shut down 101 in both directions in that area. crews continue to build containment lines ahead of an expected increase in winds. one building is destroyed. fires 863 acres and has s. 5% contained. cal fire says much of the smoke seen around the county is smoke from the august complex. all the smoke is causing this ominous red sky about three hours north of santa rosa. that is scary looking. more than a dozen firefighters were hurt while fighting the fire in monterey county this morning. they had to deploy an emergency shelter. three firefighters were airlifted to a hospital in fresno. one is in critical condition. the fire burned 50,000 acres overnight. officials say it was started by arson on august 18th. the head of cal fire says he has never seen fires like the ones we are experiencing. of he says the conditions right now are extraordinary and they all began last winter. >> we had had a winter that was very dry and th

so what you have left are those orange and red colors in the sky.o it's why we had that perpetual sunset yesterday. now you might have noticed yesterday you couldn't smell the smoke. and the air quality was a little bit better than what it looked like and it's all because of that marine layer. that ocean breeze kept the smoke suspended up in the higher levels of the atmosphere. so you had and you saw that orange filter in the sky but you didn't smell the smoke and the air quality wasn't really that bad. it was moderate for yesterday. but things are changing for today. we still have the upper level winds sending that smoke into the bay area. but that smoke is now settling down to the surface. it's the reason why we have that unhealthy air this morning. now as we look to the weekend, we could see less smoke and hopefully so as the low pressure system ushers in more of the ocean breeze as we go to the weekend and into next week. now because of that smoke, temperatures below average. cooler and we're looking at mid 70s in santa clara and san jose this a
