smith now reports from switzerland. today's really been historic moment we've seen this big working group we walked into the room earlier on today to watch these final negotiations taking place there representatives from all hundred fifty three current members of the world trade organization and it resulted in them bringing down the gavel quite literally on the documents that were approved russia's accession to the world trade organization then chief russia's chief negotiator maxime made was actually quite entertaining speech about what's a long process this is being he talked about the ups and downs the dramas and even the comedies of this process and he said at the end actually russia is not fully satisfied with this deal but his main geneva lesson that he's learnt is that it's no one's really happy with a deal that it means that deal is fair as far as what happens next this is being the sort of the sort of documentary approval if you like and then later on in the year in the middle of december based documents will be passed to the ministers of the world trade organization and they will then formally approve it and it

smith joins us live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. a couple minutes ago a large group of police officers, oakland police and others, just took off down broadway. in fact, when we got here maybe 15 minutes ago the entire street here near 14th and broadway was closed because there was so much going on. so many officers, so many people wandering around after a very long night and a really, really what was considered a peaceful day, peaceful demonstration with occupy oakland. then overnight, a group of demonstrators broke off, if you will. there was heavy graffiti here on the buildings. it is pretty much on several of the buildings around here at 14th and broadway. just a really dramatic turn of events from what city leaders say was a peaceful demonstration with about 7,000 people overnight. the splinter group broke off temporarily, took off a vacant building near franko gala plaza and started fires according to the police. the interim chief said some people were determined to cause trouble. i spoke with an officer by phone from the oakland police department. he said the g

aaron smith is the executive director and co-founder of the young invincibles, his group worked with on this report. aaron, that isn't the only discouraging finding coming out of this study. average tuition is three times higher than it was for those in 1980. two out of three young adults are graduating with student loan debt that averages over $24,000. how much tougher is it for young people to come out with a resilient attitude knowing what they have to face ahead? >> well, i think the state of young america report illustrates the fact that there are challenges and some of the challenges that young people face now are fundamentally different than what my parents faced 20, 30 years ago. when you mention student debt, you mentioned jobs, young people have a 17% unemployment rate, it's about twice the national average. absolutely, the challenges we're facing are unique. but statement, i think our report and our poll shows a resiliency and an optimism about the future that's remarkable and points to the possible greatness of this generation. we had 69% of young americans saying they be
