the life of the 35th president. >> my name is larry schiller, and the smithsonian american art museum allows me to the guest curator of this exhibit on jfk. i photographed a lot of politicians. i started with richard nixon, governor brown in california and john f. kennedy and many of the events he was present at. why this exhibit here in the american art museum at this time? it is the centennial of his birth 100 years ago on may 29. how do you put an exhibit like this together? first you start with a few researchers. we collected 34,000 photographs of jfk and his family. it took about six months and became the basis of a very important book that we published. from those 400 odd pictures in the book we were able to select 77 photographs that we felt told the story of jf k and his life and times. john f. kennedy was a president who saw america's place in the world. he was a man who understood history, who served in world war ii. he understood the issues of civil rights. he understood many of the conflicts around the world. this exhibit addresses the issue of jfk's vision for america. it

let me thank the smithsonian for having us here on this auspicious occasion. i look out and see a lot of faces from newark, d.c., and we had a conversation about this. he was quite a man. the question. let me just get directly to the answer to this. did we have representation? no. there were two city council persons at best time -- at this time. one was irvine turner, who was the first black elected officials elect it in 1954 as a city councilman. first, that was quite something because, power concedes nothing without a demand. he had the stuff to back it up. that is the kind of election it was, as are all the elections. he and the other city councilman, who were in leg did -- elected as a councilman, they were by the traditional power structure, which at that time was run by an italian mayor. he was interested in becoming the first italian governor in the state of new jersey. all of the issues that were waiting down upon black people, especially, all of the issues of poverty, break that down, you have schools, you had teachers that did not want to teach this

we have the smithsonian here doing a lot for us. the air and space museum are hosting people and they're giving away free glasses. these are highly coveted. you can't find them in a lot of places but the day of a lot of places will have them. the air and space museum will have them and the zoo will have them. take kids to the zoo and watch the eclipse at the zoo as well. they'll have glasses there as well but they'll probably run out but that's something fun you can do too. lite of areas all have events and all are on our website nbc washington dol. you can find them there but it's going to be a g >> if you want to get your children interested in science ands a tr ands a ands and astronomy it's the per mekt lea -- perfect learning opportunity. >> you'll have lots of events. tell us about the events that you'll be taking part in and offering to folks in this area. >> nasa has events all across the path of totality. 15 different sites. you can find out about those at nasa.gov and safety tips and information about the eclipse as well.
