of downtown sonoma, the historic sonoma square, protecting homes in at it area. chris, you said there's about 400 homes in the mandatory evacuation zone. of course that is the priority right now. daybreak cannot come soon enough for these firefighters. that is when air-drops can begin. it is too dangerous obviously to do air-drops when it is dark before sunrise. so obviously firefighters waiting with bated breath to start those air-drops. a man sitting in his driveway, he did not want to go on camera but he told us he had been warned by sheriff's department and firefighters he had been warned at least nine times to get out. he wasn't going to go anywhere, he was going to stay at home. he said, look, the flames are a couple of miles away. we said, yeah, we know, we advised him it might be a good idea for him to get out but he said for now he's staying put. we saw one other person on the street who did not want to go on camera but said they were staying in the neighborhood as well. that is the choice they have made. but it looks like most people, and it is a good i

the fire scene, we have been talking about sonoma county, but we are talking about the city of sonoma, one of the homes destroyed earlier today when the fire came raging into this neighborhood, with more wins in the forecast, there are concerns this could happen again. 74-year-old helmets and his wife sharon are drinking wine by candlelight. outside, their home has been yellow tagged, it is included in a mandatory order to evacuate. they have no power, but they are refusing to leave. >> i feel that we have enough experience together that we can make a did -- and intelligent decision if we want to leave or if we want to stay. and we basically, in the morning, we were ready to leave, because the wall of fire was so large, and the glow was so big. >> reporter: they are in the minority, most everyone else has left. sharon says she knows it's against the advice to stay, but she is worried about her house. but your whole life is lost, it is traumatic. if something does happen to this house, i'm fine, that's fine. >> reporter: homes left off of castle road, is still not clear how many homes

and they are making progress in sonoma county. they are keeping the fire moving away from populated areas. >> ktvu's maureen naylor is on moon mountain road above the town of sonoma tonight with the encouraging signs and why this is an especially emotional fight for some. >> reporter: since our last report i was able to talk with firefighters here and they do say it's looking encouraging. they were working on this line here which is good news for the town and city of sonoma. they are worried about if they broke this line moving towards sonoma but that's not the case at all tonight. they say it's looking good. one thing of concern we are standing in a mandatory evacuation zone. this is actually one of the dangers here and why you need safety gear if you are out here. sometimes firefighters call them widow makers, smoldering trees. it goes all the way down to the root. and today i have seen several large tree branches fall with a lot of dry conditions. at this point, crews say the firefight is not over. >>> reporter: crews fought fi

tom, i'm standing on moon mountain road in sonoma county north of sonoma. this is where the fireline came up right here. it came up to this road and is still smoldering at this hour. just a minute ago a fire crew was here putting out hot spots. they wanted this area to burn because they are trying to burn this canyon out. they are at this point trying to protect homes as this firefight continues. >>> reporter: crews fought fire with fight lighting backfires to burn fuel. as hand crews brought help on the ground, a national guard helicopter assisted with water drops from the air. the marin county fire crew cut a hole in a swimming pool cover to use water to protect this house on moon mountain road in sonoma county. it's one of many beautiful homes that dot this landscape north of sonoma. >> so what we are doing today is kind of twofold. the first thing we want to do is protecting homes. right? what we need to do is get a perimeter. >> reporter: the heart of wine country is shrouded in smoke. nearby at the monte rosseau vineyard you will see dusty grapes stil

in the city of santa rosa 400 people are missing in sonoma county. tonight we are learning the names of some of those killed in the wild fire, we are live in santa rosa with the latest. >> reporter: the majority of those missing have been found safely but unfortunately the death toll has gone up and it's expected to climb. tonight we learned the names of 10 people that lost their lives to this fire, the majority of them were from the santa rosa area. on that list is, carol collins- swasey, lynne anderson powell of santa rosa, arthur tasman grant of santa rosa, suiko grant, doll hal hal, leroy peter halbur -- donna mae halbur, leroy peter halbur, valerie lynn evans, carmen caldentey berriz, michael john dornbach and veronica elizabeth mccombs. we are told that most of the victims were found in their homes, one person was found by their car, at this point it's hard to say if there are any common conditions about how the victims died but the youngest person on the list is 57, the majority of the victims are elderly in their 70s and 80s, the sheriff expl

west into downtown sonoma. they built a fire break on a ridge east of downtown and managed to keep it from getting into the historic center of sonoma. you can see the video of sparks swirling in the wind. the northbay winds have calmed down significantly since this morning. let's take a look at the weather. 17 fires burning in northern california. will focus on sonoma county. you can see the winds are down, the humidity is down as well. that is why there are red flag warnings that have been extended through tomorrow at 8 am. the humidity fell into single digits late this afternoon. but the wind speeds -- you will notice the air quality improvement south of the golden gate because of the offshore winds we had overnight. it pushed most of the smoke over the ocean and not into the south and east bay. we had blue skies for much of the bay area but not in the northbay. the winds peaked early this afternoon, they moved slowly. the humidity will plummet as well. that is not good news. red flags have been extended as a

sonoma counties.... has burned more than 52- thousand acres... but it is now 78-percent contained. the 'atlas fire' in napa and solano counties ... has burned just over 51-thousand acres... and is 80-percent contained. 'the week sonoma burned.'ay we got a look at some of those badly burned areas. fewer than 10 miles away from downtown sonoma, a charred blackened landscape. many vineyards and buildings in tact, but a once bucolic scenery, now changed. here we met up with gil parsons, who has lived in these hills for over three decades. (gil parsons / sonoma resident) parsons: we were evacuated several days ago and this is the first i've been back. remnants of the fire all around.parsons: everything's scorched immediately beyond us and now scorched from the other side as well. but miraculously, the fire stopped at his property. danny: fire was right here, this is your property!parsons: that's amazing. it's beyond comprehension. perhaps there is some magic force we don't know about.all but one of his animals survived, cared for by good samaritan neighbors. parsons: it's incredible the spirit the people are showing, especially the animal people, everybody has joined together. danny su: when gil came back to his property here he

and the sonoma county area. >> northern sonoma county. >> the spring in meteorologists to talk about the winds. >> that picture is a good reminder there is still a lot of active fire behavior happening right now for the next concern some strong winds. standing by we have jimmy packer a meteorologist with the weather service. they have meteorologist the specialize in fire forecasting is in the north bay in sonoma county. have you been watching the weather conditions? is this wind event on track for tonight and tomorrow morning? >> we have been watching a carefully. we are expecting the gusty winds to start this evening and continue tomorrow morning. a red flag warning starts very soon at 5 pm. it continues tomorrow through 11 pm. >> in your opinion based on what you have been studying is this the most threatening wind event since the fire started? >> yes. we had one a couple days ago. it wasn't that strong. this is going to be stronger as the low pressure moves to the north. we are expecting stronger winds . >> i'm sure you guys are working hand in hand with cal fire. you are giving t

this is outside of downtown sonoma. >> this is sonoma valley is what they're calling this area. as you can see, it's near sonoma valley hospital but the hospital is not a threat. we want to let people know. that is not part of that evacuation order but just a reference of where it is. this is video we shot from overnight in that area of sonoma valley as crews were going to that area to evacuate people. they say this area wasn't as populated as the second mandatory evacuation, but in the sonoma valley area, they say about 50 to 100 homes in that area. they wanted to get everyone out. this is 7th street east of east napa street to denmark street, north side of denmark street from 7th street east to napa road, 8th street east north of denmark road and east macarthur street, east of 7th street east and this is also hamblin road. >> we have a crew here at east mcarthur and 7th and they got these 30-foot flames. so, the timeline that we experienced was this evacuation for sonoma came into play around, what was that, 3:00 a.m. >> yeah. >> and they said we think we got everyone out. it'

so the wind is there for much of sonoma. napa county is coming down a little bit but the humidity is in the teens. american canyon had north winds at 70 degrees and now it has turned west southwest with the humidity going up a little bit so that is a little bit different compared to a couple of hours ago. santa rosa at the airport in north, napa airport is north, but novato and petaluma are southwest. concord is east and out to the valley it has been coming down a little bit. there were gusts of 68 miles per hour in petaluma but rohnert park at 68 degrees with the wind northeast compared to the westerly component at bodega bay. there is a little hint of maybe an onshore breeze but the red flag warning continues until tomorrow morning. the breeze continues to come down in the higher elevations you will have good gusting but by 11:00 a lot of these should be decreasing. it will be breezy but not as windy as it was. it is all smoke and haze with a zero fog so it is all smoke and haze coming from this system. if these and 60s fo
