this was near glenwood drive in the south bay. those flames triggering evacuations before crews were able to contain it. there's no word on what sparked that fire. it is 610 on your wednesday morning. taking a peek outside, waiting for the sun's arrival. this is in the east bay overlooking walnut creek. kari has got a look at our temperatures. i noticed it was a little cooler. at least it felt that way this morning. yeah, and i think it will be like this over the next few days as we get more clouds coming in tomorrow. we'll even start out tomorrow morning with some early morning rain. most of the north bay will see rain chances beginning tonight, but don't worry, this is all drying out. moving out of here in time for your halloween evening. and then the weekend. we'll have another chance of rain coming in mainly early saturday morning. so this is the first system that's arriving with some spotty showers already seeing some sprinkles in parts of the coastal north bay, and so that will continue to fall apart as it moves in. better c

a veteran stand down event started in the south bay today and goes through friday. it offers dozens of services to those who need them. nbc bay area's ian cull was there and joins us now. all right, ian, talk to us about what types of services they provide. yeah. so the county has more than 100 vendors all at one site. they're offering things like legal advice, homeless resources. there's also free clothing and groceries, even free dental work and haircuts. jesse stackhouse served 21 years in the marine corps, and he thought he was getting all the benefits he needed until he stopped by the event at the santa clara county fairgrounds today. this should have been happening long ago, because there's a lot of resources out here that veterans is not aware of, and there's a lot of help out here. and they say that there's a first of a kind of its kind, a service there as well. yeah. yes. the county says that it's never been done in the state before. they call it the claims clinic. it's where vets can quickly apply for disability or their families can apply for survivor bene

so if it felt hot in the south bay, it certainly was. and right now these are the current temperatures in south san jose. we're still in the triple digit mark at 100 degrees. take a look at the interior. concord, fairfield, and of course into parts of livermore and tracey 100 for san martin. 113 san francisco is at about 80 degrees, but if you notice, near san mateo and oakland, we're in the 80s. and of course, in through some parts of the north bay upper 90s as well. and yes, we did see that the heat advisories and heat warnings were extended. not surprising from the model runs we had seen those forecasted highs continue to stay pretty dangerously hot in through parts of this week. and if you notice clear skies, we've got that high pressure still sitting over really the entire state of california. there's red flag warnings extended all the way down through southern for california much of the hilltop areas. and for us here locally. we're going to see this heat advisory and heat warning in place until saturday. we are expecting to see tho

well, a lot of previously unhoused people in the south bay now have a roof over their heads and numerous other services as part of a new program in san jose. it puts together homeless housing with market rate development. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us from a converted motel that shows off the new strategy. the new complex here at the old pacific motor inn site provides more than just immediate interim housing. it could also be a model for future development. right. here we go. there was an air of celebration today as san jose, santa clara county and a nonprofit agency, path, officially opened the doors to a transitional housing facility that will provide 72 units to previously unhoused individuals, including crystal garcia, who along with her dog sara, has escaped life in her car. i was like, god help me. like i was at my i was at my wit's end. and a week later, i get a call from my boat and they're like, come fill up, come, come to the interim housing. and i was crying. i was like, thanks god. like, you know what i mean? i was blessed. i was so happy. me and my dog finally get a

a major milestone in the effort to protect the south bay from the next major earthquake. we're talking about the ongoing retrofit at the anderson dam. nbc bay area's ian cull explains the milestone moment and what comes next. there's a bubble. those bubbles signify a major step in a project to make the south bay's largest reservoir seismically safe. the last boring machine parts have now been pulled out of the anderson reservoir in morgan hill, marking the end of the major tunneling part of the project. it took nearly two years for them to dig more than 1700 feet next to the dam. you know, driving a drilling machine from inside of a tunnel into a lake. there's a lot of things that we were anticipating could go wrong. and it all went pretty smoothly. we use a micro tunnel boring machine. in may, we got a tour of the tunnel during the excavation. now there's a clear path from the reservoir down to coyote creek. the next step is to line the tunnel and complete the piping. basically, to be able to put water through it. in the future, if the dam gets too full too fast. the new

a major milestone in the effort to protect the south bay from the next major earthquake. we are talking about the ongoing retrofit at the anderson dam. nbc bay area's ian cull joins us now. and ian explained this milestone to us. and why is it so important? yeah. so for two years, valley water crews have been digging a tunnel from the base of the anderson dam in morgan hill into the reservoir. and recently, well, they finished. you're looking at video of the last boring machine parts being pulled out of the anderson reservoir, signaling the end of the major tunneling project. valley water crews will be installing a large pipe now, so if the dam gets too full too fast, they can release a massive amount of water from the reservoir into coyote creek below at a controlled speed. it's a feature that many believe could have helped prevent flooding in 2017 when the reservoir spilled over. this step had to be finished before the dam could be rebuilt, and they say it largely went as planned. you know, driving a drilling machine from inside of a tunnel into a lake. there's a lot of

and they will come in the south bay. the vta is banking on it. the transit agency is offering up to $175,000 in grants to encourage businesses and community groups to set up near transit hubs. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joining us live when that announcement that's happening right now, kri. hi there. marcus and laura. so yeah, things are just about ready to get started here at mclain. this is one of the community organizations that is going to be getting one of those grants from vta in order to create programs closer to transit hubs and draw people in and give them a reason to be near their transit hubs and not have to get in their cars and drive elsewhere. our valley transportation is offering 14 of these grants of up to $175,000 for housing and commercial commercial development, plus smaller grants for community groups like mclain ward to build within a half mile radius of transit stations. now, the focus initially will be on three stations, which is downtown san jose, santa clara, and the 28th street station. by putting a housing and services

in the south bay. the san jose planning commission voted against a hospital expansion in east san jose. the commissioners recently voted 7 to one to reject this idea of expanding the good samaritan hospital opponents believe expanding the hospital could be harmful to the city. they say that's because the company that owns the hospital has a history of closing facilities that it deems are not profitable, leaving a hole in community health services, hca, healthcare owns good samaritan hospital and is selling regional medical center to the county. the commission's recommendation now goes on to the full city council for consideration. a recent oakland high graduate and the division one basketball talent named money. williams is returning home to the bay area after both of his parents recently passed away. the university of montana guard and his older sister plan to take care of their 3 younger siblings. but they do need some help. their goal is to raise $75,000 on a gofundme to help pay for funeral costs.

well, breaking news for you, right now in the south bay. two people are dead. this is after an overnight crash in gilroy. first responders telling our photographer there at the scene that one of the victims is their coworker. now, the two car crash happened around 1230 this morning. this was on highway 25, in bloomfield. according to witnesses, a solo driver in each car died there at the scene. witnesses also informed our crew that one of the victims is a santa clara county emergency dispatcher. we have reached out to the chp to try to receive confirmation there. the cause of that crash is not yet known. turning now to the race for the white house. with just more than a week to go until election day, the presidential candidates are ramping up their campaign events and really sharpening their attacks. vice president kamala harris focusing on pennsylvania, a key state on the path to victory while former president trump rallied before a packed madison square garden amid controversy surrounding other speakers. today, in the bay's alice barr joins us live in washing
