last few days of rain has hit the north bay and still, it's walloping a big punch in that area right now. but there's more to come for the east bay and the south bay. let's go to kron four's lezla gooden who caught up with some people who are getting ready for their reign. >> bay area residents are continuing to prepare for the atmospheric river storm that has made its way to parts of the area on wednesday. some places were pounded with rain. and others like contra costa county are holding their breath and preparing for their turn to face the storm concerned. we're just continuing to do our normal maintenance, which is clearing storm drains, catch basins, roadside ditches monitoring and maintaining our flood control channels and keeping our sandbag station stocked for our customers and residents. the county has several sandbag locations that are available. 24 7 for residents full list of locations can be found here like control channels. we clear our storm drains are catch basins. what we're really doing is going out and just making sure that those are staying free of debris and are clogged up in case the rains. and when the rains do come. >>

christie smith, nbc bay area news. a south school district is moving the bay area forward by engaging students with technology. sometimes when a student is struggling, it's not because they can't handle the material. sometimes it's as simple that they just can't hear it. all teachers in san jose's union school district use enhanced instructional audio in all of their rooms. basically, teachers mic up in order for the students to hear them more clearly. it also helps students with attention deficit issues or those who are english language learners. now, while some adaptive teaching methods involve technology, others are as simple as putting a grip on a pencil to help kids whose motor skills are still developing. the district says providing these changes make for some serious light bulb moments with kids. assistive technology can change. you know, someone who is not enged and unable to participate in the classroom to make them feel like they're included, and make them feel like there is more opportunity for them to succeed. prov

areas. once you get off the main highways, spotty showers will continue further south in the bay area. jose, though, like the to come out of today, dry tomorrow. we will continue to see our heaviest of rain in the north bay. in fact, the south bay and much of the rest of the bay area may even see some peeks of sunshine tomorrow as the atmospheric river meanders north. we'll push further south, though, as we move into friday. and with that, the rest of the bay area will finally get in the mix with some of the heaviest of rainfall could actually see that occurring. easy to spot. you're river right there off shore that will eventually push further southward into the bay come friday. rainfall totals. we've already seen a lot of rain, multiple inches in the north bay. let's add up another 2 and a half inches on top of that into the start of tomorrow morning. no rainfall whatsoever for parts of the south bay. so quite a disparity between north and south as that system is stalled out to the north by the time we reach next week, we've got additional rainfall on top of the inches. we've already

tonight the warning as police around the bay area and the state hunt for a suspected sexual predator from the south bay. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us from mountain view with more. the mountain view police has been investigating this case for some time and say it's still very active, but the case was being kept low profile until the suspect skipped a court hearing and became a fugitive. investigators say 34 year old franklin enrique salzano elor is a mountain view barber who had already started making court appearances for two sexual assaults and is being investigated for possibly drugging and assaulting or raping at least 20 other men. salzano also worked out of his apartment on escuela avenue, and his next door neighbor, who asked not to be named, was stunned to hear the charges today. having that next door is something that you would never predict, and it's kind of triggering that maybe we just maybe it was in our vision. we just never saw it because it was just like an ordinary man. we i don't even know what to say, to be honest with you. i'm just caught off guard completely. police firs

bay storm tracker. 4 is showing a lot of cloud cover to the south. if you're heading south of san jose, you're still looking at your partly cloudy skies. well, most of us in the bay area are looking at clear conditions that are about to get a nice sunrise, indeed, saying goodbye to the rain and saying goodbye to it for likely the rest of the month to. so we got easy travel conditions ahead of us. it is a cold morning nevado santa rosa, you're down to 39 degrees right now. dublin down at 42 degrees for your current temperature. so definitely throw on that extra layer, make it the cozy layer this morning. no need for the rain jacket from this point forward. you can stash that away for a little while. indeed, it has been a breezy during our overnight hours, but a crisp and clear morning is on its way with daytime highs. nicely in the upper 50's to low 60's roadways this morning. it's 7 minutes. >> now that we're super close to thanksgiving, hopefully we got some lighter morning commute city ways. but, you know, travel is going to be heavy during our afternoons. that was an incident yesterday on the bay bridge, which is not affecting us this morning. 6 minutes on the rich

the heaviest rain is actually going to be well south of the bay area, but we do have some isolated downpours this morning. so as you commute early on, we're finding some heavier showers around pacifica, south san francisco. some of these begin working into the city over the next 30 minutes. san leandro, san lorenzo seeing some heavier showers. a similar story asu work through sunol over the past. pleasanton seeing a downpour as well. here's the wider picture. live doppler seven along with satellite. the bulk of the rain is going to be to our south along the central coast. that's actually where the flood risk will lie over the next 24 hours. you look at the flood risk here locally and we don't have one. we're not tracking inches of rain like we saw for days last week. today, most of the rainfall is going to be between a quarter and a half of an inch of rain. where there is the flood risk is to our south around santa barbara points to the north, because that is where the heaviest rain is focused over the next 24 hours. so no flood watches are in effect here. we don't have any wind advisories.

bay may have a bit of a break. tomorrow it begins to push back to the south, along with some colder air, and it's going to sweep across the bay areamorrow morning and then stall out over the south bay. so that's when we'll start to really rack up those rainfall totals for today. there could be another half inch of rainfall for santa rosa on northward. much less farther south. and then tomorrow, once again, that's when we start to see spots like san jose getting at least a half inch of rainfall, about the same in livermore. and additional rainfall in the north bay by saturday, we're catching a bit of a break, and in total we may see another 2 to 3in of rainfall and then we are looking at a break for part of the weekend. but a new atmospheric river arrives late sunday into monday, and that's going to keep it unsettled, at least through wednesday. it looks like wednesday if you're planning on traveling for thanksgiving, the rain will start to taper off then and we are all dry beyond this 7-day forecast. and mike, you're still concerned about the bay bridge? yeah. both directions. the direction getting into the city that's westbound.

that's going to impact a lot more community members widespread throughout the bay area including the southing with localized flooding and ponding and of course we continue to watch the river there closely as we head into this evening hours tonight. and the rain continues to add up. right now, and for the past couple of days it's been dry down into areas like san jose and the one thing i want to mention though before we diveinto the rain forecast, i want to show you the winds. because we're still dealing with the gusty wind sweeping in from the south and under a wind advisory until 10:00 tonight. and there's a reason why we're dealing with winds anywhere up to around 30 miles per hour in communities that have been dealing with the lot of heavy rain soaking those ground -- the ground all throughout the north bay. allowing for those trees to to be really wobbly too as the winds strengthen and reports of downed river has been acting like a fire hose up in the north bay, but now it's starting to tilt more north south as we head all the way into the afternoon and evening hours tonight. now we're

that masks was back in april and volunteers gather in the south bay for a special thanksgiving me >> now at 4.30, across the bay area, people are cleaning up following last week's powerful storms. and in san mateo, one woman says she is lucky to be alive after a tree hit. her house happened saturday morning. kron 4 charles clifford has details. >> well, here in san mateo, the home behind me is red tag. that means nobody is allowed inside for safety reasons. the woman who lives here is ok and she lucky that things didn't turn out a lot worse around 3.30, saturday morning, a large branch of an even larger oaktree broke free and smashed into the roof of this house along maple street in san mateo, the owner, heidi mccartney, was home at the time sleeping, but she didn't hear the crash. she was woken up by commotion outside her window. >> they were shining light. should my bedroom window. that's when i woke and i open joy and there were police and >> fortunately, no one was injured. and over the weekend, crews were able to remove the branch and the tree. but the damage to the roof was extensive. the falling branch also k

we've got 30s for most of the bay area from south san jose. look at fairfield 33 degrees up through parts of the north bay, 33 as well. and just to give you an idea, here's the temperature difference. compared to the past 24 hours running about 11 degrees colder right now in morgan hill, ten degrees cooler in oakland, and things will stay dry but cool throughout the remainder of the afternoon. we're in the 40s through about 9:10 a.m. for a lot of the spots, and then will be in the upper 50s low 60s. now i want to show you satellite radar, because the first thing you're going to notice is going to be the increase in cloud cover today. but look what's churning out in the pacific. there it is. you can see that moisture tap the atmospheric river is expected to make its arrival starting tomorrow. and folks in the north bay definitely need to prepare as we continue to see an active weather pattern lining up just in time, not only for wednesday, but also for the weekend. i'll have a closer look at that forecast in a few minutes. first, let's check in

and it has with a good soaking for the south bay, too. nbc bay area's damian trujillo joins us from downtown. messy out there. damian. well, yeah. jessica. we're still waiting for that torrential rain to arrive. it's been a steady drizzle and light rain on and off since about 330 this afternoon. before that, it was relatively dry. now, crews from the city tell me that downtown san jose is one of the hot spots for this localized flooding. so tonight they are out in force for what's been pummeling most of northern california for two days. finally made its way to the south bay this afternoon, and it came with a bang. city crews have been spending the last few days doing prep work, clearing out storm drains in hopes of heading off problems before they begin. tonight, they're all on storm patrol, three shifts to make sure localized flooding is minimized. all hands on deck type of stuff. you know, we cruise the city. we go by a lot of schools, and we try to make sure they're all clear. you know that their stuff doesn't flood around them after they clear the d

south. so we're talking about monterey bay probably the big sur area further south, not taking aim directly he bay area. that's great news for us. we had some record amounts of rainfall. we're going to try to dry things out a little bit, but not entirely tonight. still going to see a chance, some more drizzle, maybe some light showers. you see another batch of moisture about the push on shore. this again is heading along toward the peninsula. further south of the that had been really drenched from that series of storms. they're going to catch a little bit of a break. most of focus going to be for the south of them. so out there right now. i don't think the doppler radar picking up on the moisture falling out there outside as it just so low level and that doppler radar just shooting over the top of the right now. but you can be certain things are pretty slick out there on the roads will continue to be so for another day or so. after that, we've got some changes the whole day. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. thank you, lawrence. now it's 6 police arrested a person this w

south bay. this has just slammed most of the bay area today. rainfall rates coming down so hard. it was nearly impossible for you to see when you were out there driving in some parts of the bay area. so the first thing i want to get out to you tonight, just be very careful here for some isolated flooding on the roadways. our drainage system is just having a hard time keeping up with this. with those heavy downpours, you'll see those areas in yellow and orange. orange. that's some of the strongest rain that we're tracking. so we still do have two flash flood warnings. this one here in san francisco and san mateo likely will be expiring in the next couple of minutes, as the heaviest rain is moving to the south. but we still have one here in alameda and contra costa counties around berkeley and oakland until 6:00 tonight. due to those heavy rainfall rates. so let's put a track on this. and you can see that heavy rain that's over oakland that's going to continue off into moraga, lafayette also walnut creek through 534 tonight. so be very very careful out there on 24. also on 680 off

south bay. here's the progression of what happens later on this morning. we will still see some light showers for the north bay, but comparatively quiet to areas further southards mid afternoon. and we should actually be looking at a pretty dry finish the day tomorrow. a few isolated showers hanging on during our overnight hours in predawn hours could see some very brief, but pockets of heavy rainfall for parts of the bay area. as we move into tomorrow morning. after that, we see things calming down and for the rest of the forecast after that leading into thanksgiving, we're actually looking at a solid break from the rain. today's rainfall mostly around a quarter of an inch. if not lighter than that up into the north bay. so manageable totals, nothing to stormy this year does see another very snowy day, mammoth lakes. in fact, never 17 inches of snowfall on the way for you. this is the big exception to that calmer forecast leading to thanksgiving. if you are heading up i-80 or highway 50 do note we still do have winter storm warnings up there until wednesday morning. so still very active in the sierra winds have calmed down as compared to where we were last

south bay. and then early tomorrow morning, we're already starting to see the activity moving away from the bay area, and we're in for sunshine tomorrow. we're expecting about a quarter to a half inch of rain in some spots. some of the higher rainfall totals may actually be in the east bay, so we'll be watching out for where that heavier rain moves through. and tomorrow we talked about the lofgren festival that's happening in gilroy. it's going to be nice for that. highs reaching into the mid 60s with a mix of sun and clouds and the volley by the bay in tiburon, is also going to see more of the same temperatures. mid 60s with a partly cloudy sky on sunday. the oakland dia de los muertos will be happening and we are looking at highs in the 70s. so that's when we will see that warmer air coming in. but it will cool down quickly in redwood city on sunday if you're going to be out there late in the evening, and we will have warmer weather ahead with lots of sunshine back to you. we'll look forward to that. thanks. kari happening now in south bay cemetery this year. taking extra steps for dia de los muer

and the focus will be to the south of the bay area.s closer to the bay area. here is our forecast model. this is tomorrow morning at 8:00. we'll bring in some cloud cover and then this is 4 p.m. notice some more coverage out there. and then still some rain showers scattered. this is 9:00 sunday and then still some off and on rain into monday. but once again the focus could actually be for the southern half of the bay area. also, as you work your way closer to monterey bay and then into tuesday, we're going to hold on to the chance of some lingering showers. although tuesday we should have improving conditions. highs for tomorrow will be in the 50s to the 60s. waking up to partly cloudy skies tomorrow morning. then that will thicken up the cloud cover throughout the afternoon hours, and you may need the umbrella during the afternoon as well. here's a look ahead. your five day forecast and you can see some scattered rain first thing monday morning, then some off and on showers into the afternoon. a chance of a shower on tuesday. partly s

bay area remains mostly dry. again, this is thursday. but by late thursday into friday, we'll be looking at that fire hose of moisture making their way further south, heading over the bay area, waking up early friday morning. this is our view at 10:00 a.m., where we are expecting heavier rounds of rain to push even farther south. likely san jose and our south bay communities, friday morning. you'll be getting in on a little bit more of that moisture. an additional inch or two is possible down south. that's something to keep your eyes on. if we look at how much rain you could expect over the next couple of days, it's really dependent on where you're located. and communities will be seeing the most abundant of the moisture. santa rosa, you picked up four and a half inches. an additional 3.5 inches is possible into tomorrow morning. a brief break again on thursday afternoon. that next wave arriving into friday. a brief break on saturday. then another wave arriving into sunday. those friday and sunday waves do have the better potential of pushing a bit further south. you might pick up an inch. up north again, that will be the big winners when it comes

rainfall since about last night into this morning, but that rain line is moving to the south here in the bay area. and also some more snow expected in the sierra. so rainfall expectations with this system, maybe a few hundredths of an inch in the south bay to possibly an inch for the coastal hills of the north bay. there is a bit of a breeze out there. winds out of the south around 15 to 30 miles. an hour. the sierra. they do pick up that winter weather advisory. it started at 10:00 this morning. snow levels around 6000 or 6500ft. and this is in place until 10 p.m. friday. so snowfall accumulations around 5 to 10, maybe a few isolated spots could be topping a foot. so this is exactly what they need in the sierra to help build up that base for all the resorts. here's the satellite and the radar. as you can see all morning long, the focus of the rain has been up in northern california, right around eureka and cape mendocino, but some green has been moving into portions of the north bay. that rain line moving to the south. and in fact, as we come in closer here, some of the coverage right now, santa

and about noon, we'll see that frontal system sweep through the bay area slightly south of the goldenate, slicing into the peninsula and over to the east bay, producing moderate rainfall in that region. by about 3:00 in the afternoon. it should be generally out of the bay area and pushing over into the sierra as a snowstorm. now on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale, this is a level one storm. a storm of light intensity producing light to moderate rainfall tomorrow, slippery roadways and breezy to gusty conditions at times. we estimate the rainfall totals by 11:00. tomorrow night will range generally from about 2/10 of an inch to about 4/10 of an inch and over in the sierra. a winter weather advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. tomorrow to midnight tomorrow. we're looking at about 2 to 8in of snow above 6500ft, with gusts up to 45mph back to the bay area. tonight, as the clouds increase and the rain approaches, we'll have low temperatures, mainly in the low or low to mid 50s. highs tomorrow. upper 50s at the coast, mainly low 60s all around the bay. shoreline. inland areas

bay and along the coast. the heaviest rain moves in late morning monday and move north to south across the bay area and moving as the sun goes down monday evening. you see snow falling in the sierra as well. the forecast is going to be drying out already by monday evening and monday night until the next rain chance. how much out of this one? the estimate from the weather prediction center is from 0.1-inch of rain in the santa clara valley down the peninsula and tri valley to maybe 0.3-inch of rain in the santa cruz mountains and some of the higher elevations of the north bay, enough to add some much needed moisture to the fire fuels around the bay area. we have additional rain chances farther down the line, not as high on the chart, thursday and friday, about a 40% chance. this will be a light rain event, not associated with an atmospheric river, but we'll take it. looking outside down towards city hall, things looking good, san francisco in the upper 50s, 57 degrees in santa rosa with temperatures elsewhere still running in the low 60s. those numbers drop off and we warm up to near average highs tomorrow. we

santa rosa area and central sonoma county, as we've picked up some record amounts of rainfall, and it's still falling much lighter and more spotty activity south of san francisco into the east bayng a much more of the bay area, even the north bay, to take a bit of a break as we go toward the rest of today. here we are at 6:00 in the evening, and the rain is lifting up to around ukiah on northward, and some spotty activity from santa rosa over toward napa. and then looking at tonight, we are looking at mainly dry conditions. so this is a brief break that we'll see. but then tomorrow morning it just comes right back down. it will be forced out by some colder air. and we're going to feel those temperatures dropping as that rain comes in, starting out during the morning commute. and continuing throughout the day. and it looks like the rainfall totals will continue to increase for the south for bay the north bay today, we're looking at another inch to inch and a half of rainfall, and tomorrow we're going to start to see the rain adding up for the south bay, east bay and the tri-valley, as well as much of the peninsula. and for the cierra, we've seen the snow coming down. now it's sw

flames gutted a south bay house this afternoon. our nbc bay area sky ranger was overhead as san jose fire crews put out hotspots. the fire started at around 130 this afternoon at that fourplex on bradford way. the two upstairs units of the house are badly burned. firefighters were able to get the flames under control within a few hours. no word yet on what started that fire. okay, the election day is still four days away, but a lot of people are already standing in line to cast their ballots. contra costa county opened five early voting centers across the county today, and election workers were caught off guard by the number of voters who showed up to cast their ballots. line was out the door at the walnut creek voting center. people waited for over an hour to vote early. they say there's too much at stake to wait until election day. i think the issues are worth it. you know, i'm a first time voter, and i just had to be here for my daughters, you know? and the women in my life, you know, my sisters, nieces, we have seen the enthusiasm for this elec
