boston. and the rare move after three storms already, none of the snow has melted. they're plowing the snow into the ocean. right to the map, the cold air stretching as far south as florida. in some places the coldest air in more than a decade. here's rob marciano in in the morning. >> reporter: there's nowhere else to put the snow. and boston taking the environmentally controversial move of dumping the snow into the ocean. now being washed out to sea as another storm comes this way. tonight -- the snow slammed northeast is bracing for more. >> it's been awful, absolutely awful. >> reporter: it sounds like a broken record, but boston's at a breaking point. roads narrowed by snow, turning short commutes into odysseys. the transit system, hobbled. after commuters in the last storm were stranded, the general manager resigned. buried fire hydrants slowing first responders. these firefighters digging them t t in newton. a typical fire hose pumps out about 300 gallons of water per minute. a typical fire truck carries about two minutes of water. digging these hydrants out is vital. in south boston, kate and pete schwan have shoveling down to a science. >> in the city

he's bundled up live in south boston.ell us everything. >> reporter: apparently cold weather drains batteries faster than warmwet. it's now -- can warm weather. it's now 12 degrees but a wind chill of minnesota 7 it was -4 overnight. and this is what sidewalks look like. i don't think there's anything inside this particular pile, but if you look right here, one of the many vehicles that had been snowed in, and this person carved out a spot for themselves until the last storm over the weekend dropped another foot of snow. all up and down the neighborhoods there are piles like this one. there's no place to put all the snow. and even the road where you're starting to see some pavement here, but there's still a lot of snow and ice. here's another example of someone who dug out and then got snowed in again. the situation is pretty bad. 280,000 miles of roads have already been plowed. the city has spent already $35 million to clear the snow during this record-breaking month of snowfall. and there is more on the way. and i want

they have been digging out here in south boston. this guy on east fifth street, dug out from three previous storms. this last one dumped another foot or more on his car. he has more work to do. that is the situation up and down the streets in in neighborhood south of boston. spots are cleared. they fill up again. plows come through and pile more snow on either side of the road. it make as mess for everyone. including a car, i can show you barely see the roof peeking out from underneath the snow pile in between a couple other vehicles. there were concerns voiced by the mayor, people are starting to play in the snow. kids are out of school this week. there are reports that some people jumping out of second story windows into the snowbanks. here is more from the mayor this morning. >> when your children are out in the snow, sledding down snow banks, you need to keep an eye on them. there have been cases where i've seen kids going on snowbanks, sledding out into the street. it is a lot of fun. there are vehicles out there. there are plo

rob marciano abc news south boston. >>> let's turn to northern california now.o word when more than it 200 evacuees can go home. at least 40 homes and buildings have been destroyed by a wildfire at the eastern base of the sierra nevada. the firefighters have gained control of this fire. there's still some hotspots. some perilously close to propane tanks. homeowners had time to grab personal items before they had to get out of there. in southern california, meanwhile, eight college students are safe and sound this morning. members of the ucla hiking club who became lost in the angeles national forest. this weekend. took about ten hours to get all of them down off that mountain because of high winds, rain and snow. they were cold but otherwise, they're all right. >>> pittsburgh area mall is changing its policy after a weekend shooting. those under 18 years old will have to be accompanied by an adult under the youth escort policy. >> the panic escape from a pittsburgh area mall. >> people started running. >> i just heard the pop pop pop. >> 7:33 that night. reports

we spent a day today down in south boston, which is absolutely buried.haven't dug out this it from that first storm. those who did have been forced to carve out more spots for their cars over and over again. the two way streets down there are now one way streets because there is so much snow piled up on the sides of those narrow roads. another problem with thick ice and deep drifts forming on roof option to. dozens have collapsed across the state. they tell us many more are at risk. another big challenge now is mass chance sit up and running. trains and buss are running on limited schedules. hundreds of know plows are continuing to work around the clock to try to clean up some of these roads, greta, with another storm expected to bring more snow here tomorrow. >> rick, it looks awful. i'm curious whether molly lion is buried in one of those snow backs. we haven't seen her in a cup perform days. anyway rick, thank you. >> well, she is trying to make it back to boston. we hope she will be here live in the snow tomorrow. >> indeed, thank you, rick. where is

reporter: so much snow the city is working round the clock to melt it at snow farms like this in south boston. across the region schools closed once again. >> it's good because like we get to go out more. but it's like the wind is so hard stow makes it worse. >> reporter: transportation stopped cold. at boston's logan airport, most flights canceled. authorities urging drivers stay off the road. but emergency workers have no choice. >> every call gets more difficult. if someone doesn't have the sidewalk dug out -- stairs dug out. i mean, we have to try to carry them through deep snow. we can put them on plastic-type sleds. >> reporter: in connecticut, piles of snow dwarf equipment struggling to remove it. >> this is ridiculous. it's freezing. we're ready for the summertime. i'm tired of it honestly. >> reporter: the massively snowfall weighing down roofs with collapse crews have a treacherous job finding ladders to shovel them off. >> if we get wet snow on top of this it's going to become a weight issue. >> reporter: what is most amazing is the ability to move snow despite the crippling effect

and the biggest totals have been in boston and the cities just off toward the south. the south shore, up to two feet of snow. by the time all is said and done early on in the morning, we could see a couple of those up around 30 inches. unbelievable. we are tracking another storm that's in the pipeline. this is for late thursday and into thursday night. if it develops quick enough and far enough we could, we could have another very significant snowstorm. a little farther east it's still plowable but more manageable. and really there is no where else to get a major snowstorm. everyone is aware we could have big totals. behind it we've got the cold. so elgts melting here. and this cold shot heads due south. we'll get below average temperatures to the gulf coast. highs in the 30s on friday for northern alabama and noshrthern georgia. for those asking if this pattern is going to end any time soon unfortunately the answer is no. it goes all the way through at least the end of february. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. >>> meanwhile tensions between russia and ukraine are simme

some are over my head which makes going around corners difficult because of that and parts of south boston one way so it's easier to only look around one pile of snow versus two when you're trying to get out of an intersection. we're seeing snow again, we're sitting at the third snowiest winter on record here in boston. records go back over 144 years and we're at number three. we are this much away from number two and with light snow we're expecting here probably an inch or two, we'll definitely get there, and we have about a foot to go before we get to number one. here's the thing, we still have a good four solid weeks of winter and after today's snow slight chance tomorrow but another chance this weekend, not to mention the rest of february and into early march will most likely have the number one snow year on record. but andrea if you have close to 8 feet why not take another foot and have the record. at least you have something to claim for living through this winter here in boston. >> i'm not sure the bostonians would agree with you, paul i guess a record is better than nothing. thank
