i'm from the university of south florida. i'm curious about your sense of the northern college volunteers and trained in ohio. i remember the kind of famous story about the student the night before he goes to mississippi and he asks god and the 0 voice of god comes out the top of the dorm room, i'll go as far as memphis. i'll tell you what they were thinking. i'm curious about two things. one, your sense of how those volunteers behaved. how well the training was, and what the long-term legacy was for them. did they -- did their commitment last to the movement in most cases? do you think it wasn't just freedom summer for them but more of a lifetime commitment? >> well, i think a lot of them were changed by the experience. i think they came to mississippi with a certain -- they came to mississippi with a certain ignorance, and perhaps some prejudic prejudices like in the one i encouraged the most often is people who aren't well educated aren't smart. that's part of the culture nay grew up in. it's hard to measure in any kind of
