in not only south jersey, look at a couple of strikes here. can you see that there? that is a live lightning strike in trenton along i-95. it was raining and now thundersnow. that is giving you the sign of the intensity. as this nor'easter is kicking in and producing a significant amount of snow coming down through parts of the region and lets go in close toward this. the motion of this area. heavy snow lifting northward, and westward. and this area you see the lightning strike along i-95 and thundersnow. coming down at a good clip. i was checking the rates here. this is 1 to 3 inches an hour. we have not seen is race through here and accumulating quickly and staying over i-95. snowing heavy in chadds ford and media and the blue route and 309 and i-95 in trenton and farther we see the movement of the band there shifting up to the north and as we look at the bands right here in south jersey. once that heavy ban moves through this heavy band moves through and the snow is coming down and elmer and hammonton. an icy mix and the snowfall getting closer to the coast and as

poconos and lehigh valley, but this dark shade of purple stretching down into delaware and over into south jersey, that's where we see the steady snow blowing around creating those whiteout conditions. it's not moving eastward the way they want it to. it's just moving from knot to south and it's kind of moving over the same areas again and again. so accumulation is not the biggest concern right now. certainly there will be some slushy roads and pile up on grassy areas. it is the fact these areas here, especially in northern delaware and into south jersey are having the worst of the conditions. again, here are those damage reports. it is staggering and you can see the main body of the storm is right here and it is not moving. it won't move out until we get into tomorrow and that's when we're expecting this see this whole thing and a shove off to the east. we're going to continue to follow this and bring you pictures. we'll update you op what's going on in your neighborhood. the best advice is don't go out unless it's an emergency. back to you. >> an area that got so much snow heading now to the le

pamela osborn, nbc 10 news. >> we see the snow falling there in south jersey. you see behind us in center city not as much. >> just wet. >> just wet. but that's what we're getting from our meteorologist. >> but don't be fooled. it's coming. this is long duration, storm, brittney. >> it's a long duration storm. even for your morning commute although we're not seeing heavy accumulation on the roads here on i-95, you can already see the snow coming down. it's coming down at a good rate here. so our visibility is going to start to go down. and now we're seeing wind gusts closer to 15 miles per hour that will eventually reach about 40 miles per hour. i want to switchover to cape may where it's a different story. it's rain coming down right now. we expect to see that heavy, wet snow going to affect our commute both in the morning and especially in the evening. heavy, wet snow leading to power outages, again possibility of tree limbs snapping. and our roads are going to stay messy even after this system leaves our area. wilmington, 2.1 inches of snow has already falle

even towards south jersey during a period of time. there's the rain. it gets heavier coming in from the west. temperatures start going down. it's still not that cold at 10:30 tonight or tomorrow morning. the morning rush is is not going to be snowy, but it's going to start getting a little windier after the morning rush. then we're going to see the changeover to snow in the poconos. hea heavy, wet snow. snow flakes, plus we're talking about the 50 to 70 mile an hour winds. so that you just can't travel in weather like that. as we go through the morning, the wind is increasing. and the temperatures are decreasing and the rain and snow line comes to the south and toward the afternoon. some of that snow could be falling even in the philadelphia area. parts of south jersey, but look at the temperatures. above the freezing mark. so we're not talking about accumulation out of this thing. it's the snow blowing that is going to cause the problems, the dangerous travel when you have conditions like that. and we don't get conditions like that very often. and her

look at the bands in the south and you're seeing those areas of lavender where it's really coming down good in berlin, not the case in cherry hill but in glassboro, on the new jerseyurnpike near woodstown. so watching those bands really intensify south of the city right now. and through the morning, mostly slushy roads north and west and south and east many of the roads are wet but in those intense bands that we saw they're getting slushy as well. it's all getting worse, though, in the afternoon and that's what you got to watch for, the heavy wet snow, the gusty winds. we're going to talk about the latest thinking of this and where the heaviest snow is falling coming up in a few minutes matt. >> basically we want everybody to be back in their homes by 9:00 or 10:00 this morning if you can be. that's when you want to hunkerdown and plan to not head out for the rest of the day. if you have to head out right now though we're looking okay for the most part on the highways. like 422 headlights coming eastbound on a wet road surface. schuylkill expressway off 422, this is the scene in king of prussia and again it's very wet. the crews are waiting in the ready here on th

lavender here and there where it's coming down pretty good so it's snowing in the city, snowing in south jersey, snowing in jenkintown and media. not so much in chadds ford. dry and in downingtown at the moment. went see that wintry mix right now that icing line with rain to the south. that mix line is going to pull up and a lot of this is going to change to rain before changing back to snow. it's a dynamic storm with a lot happening throwing a little bit of rain, sleet and snow through our region so really a mix of everything and the nor'easter just now starting to take shape and we can see that pulling up a lot of moisture. there's a lot of moisture to work with. this is a long time effect that we'll be dealing with this through the day. this is just the beginning. the height will be later on this afternoon. here's a look at 11 o'clock this morning and we can see still rain south and east, maybe still just slushy traveling in south jersey. but the storm will be intensifying especially in philadelphia north and west and the snow will be coming down heavily at that point. then we advance this t

pretty sharp cut-off because of that rain, and wintery mix threat, as we head to the east and south jersey. so about three to six immediate jersey suburbs, further east, the lesser and lesser the totals. pretty high certainty as far as models, consistency, telling us timing of the heaviest snow coming midday and into the afternoon. high certainty also of the significant totals west of i-95. the lower certainty where exactly that rain-snow line is going to set up, over jersey, so that keeps in question some of the south jersey totals. so what to expect, though, as far as downed trees and wires, as we deal with the weight of this heavy snow, especially where we will see those totals up toward a foot, wind go cents of 40 miles per hour already weakens trees and saturated grounds, we could see more power outages, through the day tomorrow. so prepare for what is in store through the day tomorrow then things quiet down, though , still have chance at few flurries on thursday, maybe even a passing snow shower on friday. and then hey, we spring forward after all of this, this week, we're going to s

and 8:00 a.m., it's setting up over parts of south jersey. it's a wet snow, and could you see a little mixing of more rain, sure. but i really think it's going to be further south. by 8:00 a.m., now we're starting to pick up some of intensity or how fast we're seeing the tape fall. notice where these winds are coming from. if you get a wind that's wrapping around from the land you've got colder temperatures, you've got snow. if you've got it coming off the ocean, that's pretty much where the rain is staying. that's what we're seeing. definitely not cold enough to support any cold air or developing snow. look at the wraparound as it brushes up against the coastline. again because of the winds wrapping around this system and intensity really picking up in these afternoon hours. which means from about that 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. slot you see here visibility will be limited. coming up in a few minutes we'll talk about the snow totals we're looking at and get to some of the details. >> let's see how it's impacting the roads. >>> minor impacts righ

it looks to be dry in allentown, and south jersey. it will take a while for this system to get going. by 9:00 could you see light rain and wintry mix over philadelphia. overnight we'll have more widespread pretiptation and that will set us up for a messy commute for wednesday. as we get into the afternoon, that's when we start to see the steady, heavy snow coming dund our temperatures also dropping. cold enough to support the snow, especially for parts of allentown, reading, pottstown, philadelphia still close to mid-30s around noon but that rain/snow line continues to sink to the south so millville at noon will see a chance of of a wintry mix. this continues through your evening commute. 6:00 we have steady snow from mount holly, philadelphia, pottstown, allentown and a rain/snow line gets all wait down to atlantic city. parts of the show like cape may could only see rainfall with this system, you, but we will still see wind speeds close to 40 miles per hour as you're trying to get home fro work. the next thing you'll see right aroun

through the next couple of hours we got pretty heavy snow across philadelphia, portions of south jersey, a quit coating to an inch or two can't be ruled out then starts to lighten in intensity. early tomorrow morning, lights snow. light rain to the south, heavier rain down the shore, then we really start to see the coastal storm ramp up and that happens about 9:00 tomorrow morning. that's when you'll start to see the banding recur in philadelphia and points to the north and west see the dark purple shading here, mix, with rain across portions of south jersey and delaware. heavy snow in the north and west suburbs. that continues threw noon, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, snowing back edge leading to the chance of accumulating snow briefly down the shore before this lift out around 6:00 tomorrow night. this is a long duration system we've edged that 6:00 to 12:00 stone. when we add in what happens tomorrow night and tomorrow will be close to six inches possibly slightly more near the city. six to 12 in wide swarth through the north and west suburbs zone of 12 plus for the poconos and it's a gradient n

this was not south jersey and now in the city. and we can put the snowfall rate on there.nd significant snowfall rates and that will impact the totals. it took a while for this to intensify. this says 3 inches now and for the most part 1 to 2 inches and now radar estimates it could be 3 inches an hour. and this pulls up to the north near doylestown and landsdowne and malvern. and lets look elsewhere. the visibility is an issue as the snow is coming down along the i-95 corridor. visibility less than a half mile in spots. that is because of the snow coming down because of the significant rates. we see the storm intensify. and lightning strike as long the coastline and area of low pressure is ramping up and wind gusts as well. not as significant yet but 31 miles per hour along the coastline near beach have en, as the snow is coming down heavily it is drawing in the colder air aloft and see the temperatures dip a bit. and still above freezing for most of the region. that is why you saw that, coming down heavily as the rates we are seeing, that is when it starts to accumulate e
