joining me on the south lawn is nbc special anchor, maria shriver and george weigel.to both of you. george, let me start with you, 1979 john paul, ii, in 2008 it was pope benedict xvi, greeted by president bush and today it's president obama welcoming pope francis. what's the difference in the meetings? what's changed? >> they're all remarkable, matt. in 1979 you had this southern baptist president greeting a polish pope, unbelievable. no one imagined such a thing could happen. in 2008 you had a former american prisoner of war, now benedict xvi, being serenaded by the u.s. army band. marvelous moment. today you've got the first pope from this hemisphere from what he calls america, not the americas, plural, as john paul ii did, he talks of america, one enterprise on this side of the atlantic. and you've got obviously the first african american president. there's all sorts of firsts going on here. the other thing to always keep in mind during this visit is that this is pope francis's first visit to the united states. his predecessors have experience with it. he's on a l

meeting at the white house. 15,000 people are expected for the south lawn event. fences have gone up to help control the crowds. porta-potties are in place as well. there will be some public viewing areas like the sidewalks near st. matthew's, but the biggest crowds are expected to line constitution avenue for the parade. the popemobile is expected to leave the south lawn of the white house about 11:00 a.m. he'll head down 17th street, up constitution, and then up 15th street back to the white house. then the pope will head to st. matthew's for a private service. after that it's back to the vatican embassy and finally about 3:30 the pontiff heads up to the basilica and the campus of catholic university. where thousands of people who are able to get tickets will watch the pope say mass. so with all that movement of the pope, you can expect rolling road closures all day tomorrow, all across the city. something we're used to, but not on this wide of a scale. and if you are planning to come down here to constitution avenue for the pope's parade, the gates to the mall

did not speak to climate change and issues as sort of forcefully as he did the day before on the south lawn of the white house where he explicitly praised president obama for the epa regulations to cut emissions from power plants, and he spoke about the urgency of some climate change and the generational challenge of it. his speech to congress, he did not use the words "climate change" or global warming. he did say to congress there is a role for congress to play in addressing humans' impact on the environment. it is very difficult for me to imagine that this is going to sway the policy divisions of either party. exampleoffer up as one congressman darrell issa, a very conservative republican from california, told green wire and reporters that this is not going to change things. i believe he said "not a bit." universally being very respectfully the pope, it was quite clear that they were not going to see this as something that kind of forces any changes in policy. one look at that, which is interesting, just hours after the pope left the capital, the house took up a piece of legislation. the
