there's a lot of new residents in southern california. so earthquakes in the east coast, you might recall the one that happened near washington d.c. to the southern appalachians our central appalachians seven or eight years ago. that was felt across a broader area. east coast earthquakes are translated across a large agree graphical area. this was felt across a sizable area but not felt in salt lake city or nevada. it was felt in fresno, los angeles and las vegas. again, as the expert up on seismology before me mentioned, this is not necessarily -- it wasn't the san andreas fault. it was another fault to the east. fortunately a loss populated area. many people live in ridgecrest but if this were 200 miles west or southwest, different impacts obviously tied to this. there's reports of a little more than 9,000 customers without power in southern california and more than half of them are in kern county. that's a concern. you can multiply that by 2 or 2.4 for the number of people add those addresses. we have some videos from the coast that sho

people in southern california are really on edge especially with the u.s. geological survey saying there's a chance and even if there's a small chance that a larger quake could still come within the next few days. cnn meteorologist chad myers. we can predict hurricanes and other severe natural event, but not earthquakes. how far has the science come? >> not very far at all, but what the earthquake prediction had the threshold been higher and we knew it would take 45 seconds for the wave to get to l.a. they would have had a 45-secondses notice and the threshold wasn't high enough for the alert system to go off and that's why l.a. didn't have their phones and pagers and all of that going off. the main quake was 7.1 and there's a 3% chance of this being bigger than that. another aftershock that could turn this into a foreshock, but only 3%, which means a 97% chance the other way and this is from the latest briefing, 27% chance of that. we still will get big after shocks and we've been getting them now for 4700 to 5,000 aftershocks since the main quake. 4700. n

so having a flashbacks of that when we heard about the earthquakes happening in southern california. it's definitely making a lot of people realize it is time to prepare for the next big one expected to hit us in northern california really at any time, but the truth is many people in the bay area would not be ready if that hit today, and it's sad but this time for us all to realize we need to get aid earthquake preparedness kit and. we talked to many people this weekend saying you know i don't have one of those in an preparedness kit you want to have water. food, canned food, especially nonperishable food, lots of water. you want to ship a blanket, some clothes just make sure you have things that you would need. i'm like medication. food for to 72 hours that you would be i've your home or if you'd be displaced, you know in in also you need to make sure you have a plan with your family know we talked with a seismologist at u c berkeley and she told us exactly what she thought about this earthquake in southern california. she said that this is not going to trigger an earthquake up here

much of southern california has been smaking vigorously the last couple months. a report indicated, a report released from oh, period of from late may to the mid-june indicated during a three-week period, there had been more than a thousand small quakes in what was called a swarm of earthquakes covering mainly areas like riverside county and san bernardino county. so this earthquake today occurred at 10:33:00 a.m. 6.4. depth of seven miles beneath the surface. the vast majority of earthquakes occur five and ten miles below the earth's surface. the orange indicates activity of or greater. in the last 12 hours and those dots in red indicate activity of 2 or greater in the last two hours. you can see that still very active there. the aftershocks are still occur. as dr. lucy jones pointed out, about a 1 in 20 chance a stronger earthquake than today's could occur in the next five days. we'll keep watching. > thank you. this jared a lot of people because we had been in a relatively quiet period with regarded to earthquakes in california. but this is the 12th largest qu

we've been bringing you live updates on today's big earthquake since it hit southern california about 10:30 this morning. it measured 6.4, making at it strongest quake to hit the state in 20 years. there have been hundreds of aftershocks as well. the quake is being blamed for starting fires that burned down at least two homes in ridge crest. the quake knocked scores of stuff, merchandise off store shelves. check out this walmart where a big cleanup lies ahead. >> the epicenter is 100 miles northeast of los angeles in a remote desert area. the nearest town is ridge crest which seems to have been hit the hardest. we have team coverage from here in the bay area all the way down to ridge crest. let's begin right there with robert handa at a hospital that had to be evacuated. robert, what's it like there right now? >> reporter: as you can imagine, it's a little hectic here, we were here at the hospital as they were doing some of the action earlier. you can see video we shot of patients being wheeled out of the hospital. that was an evacuation done so that the fire crews and inspectors coul
