we've seen the seafood industry in southern california wane quite a bit from when i was a kid, and at the same time, as i mentioned earlier, the world population has tripled, so we're bringing in less seafood, even though the demand is going up and up, so we have this opportunity to grow fish in the waters off the coast in clean, clear water that's not polluted. it's not within a bay. it doesn't interfere with water skiers or kayakers or anybody else, but it'll be out in 200 feet of water in a quarter- to a half-knot current going by, which means that the water stays clean and the biomass of the fish has no impact on the environment, and yet we're still in very close proximity to the market, so the product when it's brought in is harvested and on the dock within a couple of hours after it's taken out of the cage, which means it's very fresh and ready to go to market. [film advance clicks] david: it's a hard thing because, as a commercial fisherman, first thing you say is, not a good thing because, you know, it's competition for us. but i try to look at, you know, the whole picture. go

and so, now we have em established at two nurseries here in southern california. currently have 15 people out helping us search for these coqui frogs, and that includes biologist with the california department of fish and wildlife as well as biologist with the natural history museum. but there's these real implications of these coqui frogs showing up and having these impacts and it's just all because they're doing what a lot of other species are doing, which is hitchhiking a ride into the nursery plant trade. as a biologist, m interest is understanding how species are dealing with urbanization, whether those are native species that are trying to adapt to these urban settings, or whether these are non-native species that have been introduced as a result of human activity and are also trying to find a way to makit here in the los angeles area. we were here specifically to look for slender salamanders. give me a hand grabbing these. and we were able to find 7 slender salamanders, and on top of that we found two other native species--a western fence lizard and a south

vaccine supply is an ongoing problem and not just in southern california, ktvu christian captain is joining us now live with a look at the impact the bottleneck is having here in the bay area christian alex vaccine, obviously in high demand here in northern california, as it is in southern california. local officials say that they have enough vaccine on hand for now, but they say the supply is tight. public health agencies and hospitals say vaccine availability continues to be an ongoing obstacle to mass vaccination efforts. los angeles mayor eric garcetti, saying the shortages leading to a pause at mass vaccination sites. this is an enormous hurdle in our race to vaccinate angelenos, and unfortunately it means that we will have to temporarily close dodger stadium and the other four non mobile vaccination sites for two days. vaccine supplies also tight in northern california, the department of public health in san francisco, saying about two thirds of vaccine go to medical institutions such as the university of california, san francisco. ucsf saying it currently has enough vaccine to contin

typically in the past it is usually in southern california or in northern california, but do have thee state in a drought has been really challenging. the state has over the last 60 years develop a network where we can move water from northern california to southern california. however, since there is no water in northern california, it has been difficult to meet everybody's needs right now. the last major drought in this area started in 1987 and ultimately ended in 1992 and it was pretty severe. not as severe as this one, but it was pretty drastic for the community. there was a lot of fear about running out of water. the voters approved constructing a desalination facility along with also making the connections to the state water project so we could import water. ultimately, the desalination facility was completed in late 1991 and was only operated for a couple months and then put into a standby mode because we had received quite a bit of rainfall and ultimately the community decided other time to keep it in standby mode, where it has been for roughly 20 years. we are taking a look a

seeing this in all parts, not just rural california, not just northern california but also the southern and urban counties as well. next slide. we have been focused on hospitalizations, on icu capacity for the last many, many weeks, nearly two months. we announced our regional stay at home order back in early december and have been tracking this information throughout. we have seen nearly 29% decrease in hospitalizations for coronavirus during the last 14 days, 14,221 individuals in hospitals with coronavirus diagnosis as of yesterday. good news, i have been sharing that we have been seeing upwards of 4,000 hospitalizations for coronavirus in a single day throughout the state as of yesterday. we were in the 1700 range for total hospitalizations so more than half a reduction in new hospitalizations day over day compared to our peak. this icu number is a little bit harder to move, individuals who need icu level care with coronavirus often stay for quite some time. they are on ventilators, the receiving other life saving care to make sure they can get through coronavirus disease and so we

you painted a very poignant picture of what it's been like living there in southern california over theast few months. even when the death rate sky rockets in communities like yours to a thousand percent more than others. there is, still, a joyous community life. and people aren't listening to a lot of the messaging. why is that? >> well, the messaging is very, very confused and garbled. you have to remember, in california, we actually had flattened the curve, back in april and early may. then, the messaging got very confused from washington, d.c. you have had outright resistance. usually, not in latino communities but in particularly upper-income, non-hispanic/white communities. so it is a very confusing situation. and many latinos do work, for example, in stores where customers come in and refuse to practice any major social distancing or mask wearing. so again, it just exposes the hard-working population, more, to the coronavirus. >> so how has this hit the communities. give us descriptions of what people have been saying to you and how devastating? >> it's been quite devastating. i
