last year in 2016, the southern poverty law center identified more than 1500. is map that you are looking at shows the majority of monuments located in the former confederate south. the center found 718 confederate monuments or statues, 109 public schools named after confederate generals robert e. lee and 80 counties or cities also named after lee. and get this, ten of our u.s. military bases are named after confederate leaders. take a look at some of the memorials. this carving on a stone mountain shows robert e. lee and his commanding officers. work first began in 1915 and was completed in 1925. these four statues down in new orleans have since been removed. and in kentucky, lexington mayor is pushing to remove two very controversial statues from a former county courthouse. mayor gray is here to talk about that now. and it certainly is a complicated one. mayor, thank you for joining us. give us your actireaction to charlottesville. >> well, i have -- our city have been examining these two statues for some time now. literally almost two years. now, charlottesvi

joining me now, former investigator for the southern poverty law center and carol anderson, professorcan-american studies at emory university. professor, when you look at the data coming out, again, from the southern poverty law center, as well as the headlines we've unfortunately had to report on, not only within the last couple of weeks, but within the last three or four years, what does this tell you in terms of what we're seeing happening today? >> i believe that what we're really seeing is the kind of culmination or the result of years of trolling in the ground of white supremacy, and legitimizing that. first through dog whistles, such as welfare queen, thug, law and order, and then with the birther movement, and then seeing that person who is championed the birther movement then coming in to being the president of the united states because his racism was so virulent that it spoke to a broad base of american citizens. and that legitimacy is what we see. >> when we look at the map of hate groups in the united states, were they existent prior to some of the themes critics will say

let me go through a little bit of who these groups are, according to the southern poverty law center. look at these groups and what they believe in you see how hateful they are. a white nationalist, white supremacist, support ideologists, some are openly using racial slurs to incite violence. other parts of the groups claim they're not violent, but still spew hatred. and different categories that you will be familiar with, the whole world knows about the kkk, the neo-nazis and n neoconfederate. then the alternate right or alt right or alternative right, if you will. this is an interesting group. a couple different facets. the alt right for the most part according to southern poverty law center has a core belief about white identity being under attack by multicultural forces, or white genocide. you'll hear that word, by the way, is not a reality. it talks about focusing on preservation of western swivization and particularly european civilization, and it coins, the name was coined by richard spencer, head of a white nationalist think tank. during his speech right after president trump
