southwest at 18, gusting into the low 20s. if you get a closer fix, you can see it's right here to to south of cordelia. we're going to zoom in closer. it may be hard to show up on the large screen behind me, but what you can see is the fire is down here off to the south. the wind is blowing any kind of smoke a little bit off to the north and you can see all of these track homes here in the subdivision that are off to the north. that's the biggest fear that that fire could hopscotch and spread. so, again, anywhere near gold hill road or off to the north on 680, you need to be on high alert at this point and be ready to potentially evacuate. we don't want to, you know, produce widespread panic here but it is that kind of situation. we have the wind out there right now. you can see in our weekend forecast we're looking at wind anywhere from about 10 to 20 miles per hour in the hills above a thousand feet. that is going to keep that fire danger elevated as we head throughout saturday and also sunday's forecast. and, of course, we

there is indeed a spike in the number of unaccompanied minor children apprehended along the southwest bordesouthwest bordere increase actually began in 2011. the rate of apprehension has increased sharply. we may apprehend as many as 90,000 kids in the current fiscal year and they have overwhelmed our resources to cope with them. in the past, the majority of kids coming alone came from mexico and they tended to be older children, 16, 17-year-old boys. that is no longer the case. the current spike is driven almost entirely by children in free countries and we have a chart you can see it is starkly laid out. the source of these children coming into the united states or el salvador, guatemala and honduras. the current population has changed as well. we don't have that on the charge that it contains lots more girls, lots more younger children dan has come in the past. and it has been pointed out and i think all of us will agree. they could be killed, raped, maimed, become victims of trafficking, extorted. many of them know the dangers they will face so we need to understand what it is, kn

today on the southwest border we are facing an escalating refugee crisis. parents are handing over their young children by the thousands to cartels who are profiting by smuggling these kids to the united states. many are under the age of 10. including some barely old enough to walk. these children with no parents, relatives or legal guardians risk a perilous and sometimes fatal journey riding buses and trains from central america via mexico. as a father of five, it's unimaginable to me that what would compel a parent to risk the lives of their children on such a dangerous passage. not to mention the risk of sexual assault, exploitations and the potential to be trafficked. when they arrive at the border, the children are simply turning themselves into the nearest border patrol agent. however, patrol stations are not set up to handle this massive and growing number of detainees. let alone children. shelters have been established like the one at lackland air force base in san antonio. we've all seen the photos of hundreds of children piled on top of each other
