southwest airlines is flying again after a brief pause in morning due to a computer problem. nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live if oakland international. bob, flights delayed as a result now. what's the the aftermath we're seeing? >> reporter: and there's still plenty of residual delays. i was inside the terminal and there's plenty of yellow on the departure screen. this is what it looked like when we arrived this morning. it still looks like that. you can see there's lots of yellow next to the southwest airlines flights, which indicates those delays. most delays for 20 to 30 minutes. we did not see any cancellations. it was around 7:03 this morning when southwest experienced a computer problem and asked the faa to temporaily stop its planes from taking off which took about an hour. a number of passengers tweeted their frustration. according to flightaware.com, more than 1,700 flights were delayed nationwide, which represents more than 40% of southwest's flights for today. today's technical was not related to the one back last year with holiday cancellations and much lon

so, the notam failure happened right on the heels of a failure with southwest airlines. we had southwest leadership testifying last week about their meltdown. the meltdown during the holidays. and i want to raise a similar concern for the faa that i raised with southwest. when something goes wrong at flights are canceled or delayed, to the degree that they were doing both of these situations, airports need to hear from you. they need to hear, in the case of southwest, from southwest. i learned from several wisconsin airports that they just did not receive any type of proactive communication from the agency about the impacts of the notam failure. they only received information necessary to respond to confused and frustrated travelers after reaching out themselves to faa's local regional office. it is my expectation in situations like these that faa should provide proactive and realtime updates and guidance to our nation's airports. can you commit to that moving forward? and can you tell me how you would approach that should we ever have a failure like this? or similar dis
